“A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES”

Whether or not you agree with Shakespeare that music is the food of love, it is most certainly the life

blood of the cinema. Imagine the shower scene in Psycho without Bernard Herman’s chilling

accompaniment or Chariots of Fire without the stirring theme tune by Vangelis.

At a Grand Charity Concert on Saturday 2nd

March the renowned Bird College, in conjunction with the

Rotary Club of Sidcup, will be presenting “A Night at the Movies” at St John the Evangelist Church, Church

Road, Sidcup, celebrating the best in movie music.

Students from the graduating class will perform songs from the world of musicals including Cabaret and

Mama Mia, and solo instrumentalists will play much loved numbers like John Williams’ theme from

Schindler’s List and the haunting melody of Gabriel’s Oboe from The Mission, and many more.

The Bird Brass Ensemble’s programme will include On My Own from Les Miserables and the Adagio from

Rodrigo’s Aranjuez, featured in the film Brassed Off.

Fans of swing will be delighted to see the return of The Little Big Band under the direction of David

McAllister. Their programme will include Beyond the Sea (Finding Nemo), In the Mood (Sun Valley

Serenade) and American Patrol (The Glenn Miller Story) and much, much more.

It all adds up to a sparkling evening’s entertainment celebrating the best in movie music as well as being a

showcase for young musical talent. What is more, it is in a splendid cause: all proceeds after expenses will

go to our two local hospices, The Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice and the Demelza Hospice Care

for Children.
