President’s Message

Rabbi’s & President’s Messages

Dear Temple Israel Families, Good news — Spring is nearly upon us! March will begin with the most exciting annual Purim celebration. We are honored to host the Third Annual Alison Senser Hamantaschen Festival and Bake-off — this year’s theme is Purimagination! Thanks to the generosity and creativity of Neil Goldberg (Ali’s father), a masterful and dynamic producer, who has shared this gift of the heart

and spirit in honor and loving memory of his daughter and our member Ali Senser z”l. This intergenerational event that inspires the child in all of us promises to be an afternoon that no one will want to miss – Sunday, March 10th from 12 – 3 p.m. at the Hilton Easton Grand Ballroom. RSVP on our website www.templeisrael.org/form/purimagination. It promises to be a great event for our congregation. I am thankful that we have begun to wrap up our Shuvu (coming home) capital campaign. I continue to be inspired by and marvel at the strength of our congregation; and generosity of our membership and extended Jewish community. We could have never contemplated that a member of our congregation would have stepped up to provide, anonymously, $400,000 of matching funds, which has recently been 100% matched. We also received a $100,000 of matching funding from the Temple Israel Foundation for those gifts that were either increased or new gifts received (up to a $5,000 match). One might also note if you visit the website, that the Sanctuary, the Social Hall and the Lobby have been reserved. These three items alone account for $1 million of campaign gifts. Wow. These are just a few examples of unimaginable generosity and there is so much more to say about all of you. We are beyond grateful for so many members who have been inspired enough to choose to give at capacity levels and those who have increased their original gifts when challenged with matching opportunities. For those of you who have not made a gift to the campaign, please find it in your heart to do so. The outpouring of generosity shows an amazing commitment to our congregation and Temple Israel’s future. Heartfelt thanks to all who have participated and to those yet to participate. I remain hopeful for 100% participation from all members. Over the past few months, our Building Committee has been nurturing the creative interior design and thoughtful inclusion of technology both of which will bring us safely into the 21st century. In addition to the value engineering inside, our future home will allow ways for us to celebrate all the seasons

(Continued on page 11)

B'nai mitzvah kids say the darnedest and most insightful things. Recently, just as I opened up my student's Torah portion to pour over some verses in search of wisdom with him, an upcoming bar mitzvah asked, "What will I do with all the money?" "With all what money?" I asked in return. "All of the money I make for my bar mitzvah." I decided not to chide him for this seeming non-sequitur and instead replied, "You can always tithe it." And with the

word "tithe" - which probably sounded like a word straight out of Shakespeare to my young friend - we were off to the races, our lesson for the day. Tithing is a direct Torah commandment. Its origins are agricultural- one would be required to give away a portion of one's produce to the priests of the Temple, a sort of sacrifice and show of deference to the One who makes the rains flow and the winds blow. What I was suggesting to my student, however, was something we should not overlook in our own day. A special kind of tithing, called "ma'aser kesafim," is a powerful way to give away one tenth of one's "kesef" (lit. silver) to those in need of more. Here, in recognition of all that we are privileged to have, we voluntarily give away a portion of our income and bless others with it. This is as automatic and non-deliberative as paying taxes to the IRS this time of year. But here, as Jews, with only our Torah and our inner voices guiding us, we heed this important practice. "I have enough to share," says this gesture. And we model it for our children and grandchildren. I feel continuously grateful and proud to be part of a tradition that makes generosity an ethical habit, and cautiously optimistic that the next generations will keep this mitzvah alive and well. When all is said and done, many kids who become young adults with the advent of their b'nai mitzvah might just as easily hoard as much cash as possible, buying the latest technological novelty, and calling it a day. Better to "spend a little, save a little, and give a little," as our tradition commands. Whether they call it tithing, ma'aser or anything else, tzedakah should endure as the necessary and reflexive genetic predisposition of our people for generations to come. We pray that our precious young will maintain a "good kup" for all we hold dear, all that is truly precious, beyond us. Rabbi Sharon Mars

Education

Parenting and the Parashah Sunday, March 3

9:15 AM with Rabbi Sharon Mars at the JCC

Parenting is a tough job. Join Rabbi Mars for an opportunity to learn with her and other parents about best parenting practices straight from the Torah.

Zachary George, son of Shari & Jason George, will be called to the Torah on Saturday, March 2. He is the grandson of Vicki & the late Mike Canter and Peggy & Walter George. He is the brother of Sarah and Avery. Zach is a 7th grader at Bexley Middle School. He has been involved with community service projects by volunteering at the Hilltop Community Worship Center and the Salvation Army Holiday Cheer Toy and Food Program. In his free time, Zach enjoys playing club soccer for Columbus East FC, and he also likes to referee CESA soccer games. When he is not playing sports he likes to read Marvel comics. Through becoming a Bar Mitzvah, Zach has learned the importance of learning and caring about our diverse world through community service. Zach’s tzedakah project is volunteering at the Hilltop Community Worship Center and donating soccer balls to the children who go there.

Zachary George March 2, 2019

Olivia (Livi) Tuber, daughter of Bobbi-Lynn Jacobs and Lawrence Michael Tuber, will be called to the Torah on Saturday, March 9. She is the granddaughter of Alice Ziskind Jacobs and the late Thomas Louis Jacobs and Eleanor Breitbart and the late Louis Tuber. She is the sister of Maximilian Tuber. Livi attends Bexley Middle School where she is in the 7th grade. She volunteers for many programs at Jewish Family Services such as the Friendly Visitor Program, High Holiday Food Basket Program and Passover Gift Bags. Livi is also a volunteer

at Bexley Animal Hospital. This started out as her bat mitzvah project, but Livi expanded her service to stay as a volunteer there because she wants to continue to serve the community. She organizes donations, socializes with the rescue animals, helps at animal exams and helps to clean. In her free time, Livi enjoys playing soccer, softball, cooking and baking, caring for animals and spending time with friends and family. Through becoming a Bat Mitzvah, Livi has learned much more about her specific Torah portion, why the building of the Tabernacle was significant. She learned the value of perseverance and positive thinking. Livi studied and practiced, researched and discussed, not only her specific Torah portion, but actual Hebrew words, chants, prayers and the greater significance of becoming a Bat Mitzvah. It led to her growth, maturity and a coming together of her community. She will be donating a portion of her gift monies to Animal shelters or pantries that accept pet food and supplies.

at the JCC "Taharah" is the act of Jewish ritual purification which is performed by our fellow community members when we die. Just as we come into this world free of sin, so does Taharah enable us to help other human beings enter the next dimension unencumbered. Come learn more about Taharah from a member of our congregation who has served on the Hevre Kaddisha (burial society) in Columbus for 20 years. Mark Weinstein will answer your questions about the sacred process of performing Taharah- involving ritually washing and dressing the body for burial. All are welcome!

SJC participants will leave feeling rejuvenated and, with the support of their WRJ sisters, be better prepared to address important advocacy issues locally and more broadly. The Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism’s Consultation on Conscience will take place immediately after SJC, at the same hotel, on May 19-21. Temple Israel Foundation Planning Ahead – in order to Create a Legacy

“My fathers planted for me, and I plant for my children.” Talmud: Taanit, 23a

The Temple Israel Foundation Legacy Circle was established to honor and recognize individuals and families who have left legacies to the Temple Israel Foundation and those who have made charitable provisions in their estates to benefit our synagogue family. Some congregants have named the Temple Israel Foundation in their will as a recipient of a set percentage or dollar amount of their estate. Some congregants have designated the Foundation as the beneficiary to a life insurance policy, retirement fund, or IRA. Some may also consider making a bequest of real estate, a valuable work of art or other personal property. The Temple Israel Foundation proudly recognizes the living members of the Legacy Circle:

This entire process has been inspired by the dreams you have shared, and would not have been possible without the confidence you have placed in our Building Committee, clergy and staff. This year, spring break comes with a whole new meaning! I am so grateful to be digging in and starting the construction project for which we’ve all been waiting.
