630 A up to 36 kV
Description
Safety ForemostThe robust mechanical constructionis a trade mark of ABBs NPSdisconnector series. The equipmentwill perform in all weather conditions,in different installation positions, manually or remotely operated. Highelectrical ratings ensure operationeven under heavy loading or fault con-ditions.
A reasonable safety margin is in-corporated in the mechanical andelectrical ratings, which in turn en-sure the reliability of the ABBdisconnectors in all circumstances.
Over All Suitability -Future ProofA modular construction system to-gether with a wide range of acces-sories make the disconnectors sui-table for all the different applicationsin the network.
The system can be expanded andupgraded as required. For example,a simple disconnector with breakingwhips can be fitted with breakingchambers to increase the makingand breaking capacity without havingto change the whole disconnector. Inthe same way, a disconnector built
for local control can be modified forremote control, simply by fitting amotor operating device in place ofthe manual operating device. Thedisconnectors are "Future proof" theycan be upgraded as the operationaldemands of the network increase.
High Performance ValuesThe disconnectors are always fittedwith either breaking whips or cham-bers to safely break the load cur-rents.
The number of breaks that canbe performed by the breaking cham-

NPS Pole Mounted Switch DisconnectorsDescription
bers is usually enough to cover nor-mal applications for decades of use.The disconnectors have been de-signed from the very beginning to besuitable for the isolation of faults. Thebreaking chambers are capable ofmaking almost all short circuit cur-rents found in overhead line distri-bution systems. All NPS 24_ discon-nectors withstand the making of faultcurrent.
Easy to Store and MountDue to the modular construction ofthe disconnectors, the space requi-rements during transport and storageis kept in minimum. Because ofdifferent forms of installation the NPSdisconnectors are suitable for manydifferent type of substations.
Phase ElementsThe phase elements are based upontwo types of insulators - porcelain andepoxy. The breaking whips are inclu-ded as standard. The whips can bereplaced with breaking chambers, seepage 9.
Mounting Positions ofthe Phase ElementsPhase elements with breaking whipsand with air breaking chambers canbe mounted either horizontally orvertically. Phase elements with break-ing chambers filled with transformeroil, code K2, can be mounted onlyhorizontally.
InsulatorsThe porcelain insulators are solid-coreand glased. The insulators are ultra-sonicly tested and subject to a fullseries of voltage and mechanicaltests.
The epoxy insulators are made ofcycloaliphatic epoxy cast resin, whichis very suitable for outdoor use. Theyare light, shock-proof and very resist-ant against arcing.
For different ambiental circumstan-ces insulators with different creepagedistances can be selected.
Main ContactsAll conductive parts are made ofelectrolytic copper. Contact pressureis mantained by stainless steelcompression springs. Due to theunique construction the main contactsare not affected by the forces ofshort circuit current or lateral forcescaused by the line conductors. Thecontact life is further increased bythe possibility to reverse the contacttips. The tips can be turned quicklyand easily using ordinary pliers.
Operating DevicesThe complete rocking type discon-nectors are delivered with controlshaft and levers, manual operatingdevice and operating tubes with pro-tective insulator.
Motor Operating DeviceFor remote control of NPS discon-nectors any manual operating devicecan be replaced with a motor ope-rating device.
The motor operating device hasall the necessary safety features. The operating device can be mecha-nically locked with a padlock toprevent both motor and the manualoperation mechanism being used. The door of the enclosure can alsobe locked with a padlock. In additionto the remote control facility, it is alsopossible to operate the device fromthe local control push buttons, oruse the hand crank. When switchedto manual operation, the electricalfunctions are always automaticallyinhibited.
The motor operating device willtolerate ambient temperatures downto -50oC. In order to prevent cor-rosion and condensation it has ananti-condensation heater rated at20 W 220 V AC fitted. The enclosureis made of stainless steel and allthe other parts are corrosion freematerial.
Ordering information and tech-nical data are given in catalogue34 UEMC 35.
Surface Treatment EnsuresLong LifeAll steel parts of the disconnectorsare hot dip galvanized. Copper partsare silver plated, except parts for theterminals which are tinned. Both alu-minium and copper conductors canbe used. The flexible copper strip ex-tension pieces are tinned, and a spe-cial aluminium alloy is used for theuntreated aluminium parts. Protectiveinsulators of the operation tube aremade of acetal resin for 24 kVdisconnectors and of composite ma-terial for 36 kV disconnectors. Smallscrews, nuts and washers are ofstainless steel. NPS disconnectorscan be consider as corrosion free prod-uct thus achieving a long operationallife.
Extensive Rangeof AccessoriesThe disconnectors can easily be com-pleted with a range of accessories, such as breaking chambers, motoroperating device, spark-gaps, fusebases and fuses.
Terminations on the moving sideof the disconnector prevent the con-ductor from being damaged andmake the opening operation lighter.Connecting accessories, page 13.
Extension bars on transformer sta-tion installations ensure that sufficientdistance is kept between the discon-nector and transformer and that theconductors are taught during ope-ration of the disconnector. Accesso-ries for transformer station, page 14.
High Rupturing CapacityFuse-LinksFuse-links OFCD_ are current limi-ting type and they are used for shortcircuit protection of transformers.Their high rupturing charasteristicsensure selectivity with the feedingcircuit-breaker.

Motor Operating DeviceRefer to catalogue 34 UEMC 35
Motor operating device UEMC 50_
The manual operating mechanism can be replacedwith a motor operating device. The device is made infour enclosure sizes, and with two different operatingspeeds. Enclosure, IP 44 or IP 55, is made of stainlesssteel and all other parts corrosion free material.
The operating device can be mechanically locked with apadlock to prevent both the motor and the manual operationmechanism being used. The door of the enclosure can alsobe locked with a padlock.
All types includes: Limit switches, blocking switch forhand operation, heater and 1 NC + 1 NO auxiliary contactand a handcrank for emergency use, 20 turns of thehandcrank are needed.
