Which Career Pathway Will You Choose? To earn your Post-Master’s Certificate, you’ll complete six courses (16 units). The learning journey begins with a one-unit course that introduces our school’s interactive online learning environment, followed by five courses in your selected career pathway.

There are seven career pathways designed specifically for information professionals. The specialized curriculum covers the skills and knowledge required in today’s diverse and global information landscapes. Each career pathway includes numerous courses, providing you with a range of options when choosing your courses. Many courses focus on technology and leadership skills that you’ll immediately use on the job.

Students can also complete an internship as one of their courses. Our innovative internship program includes place-based and virtual internship opportunities at a wide range of information organizations. Internships are a great way to gain hands-on professional experience, explore different types of jobs, and build your network—all while earning course credit.

Digital Archives and Records Management career pathway

Seven Career Pathways

Digital Archives and Records Management Students hone their skills in organizing, preserving, digitizing, and managing collections of physical and digital assets, in order to preserve them and make them accessible online.

Digital Curation Courses cover topics like creation of new digital media, digitization and digital preservation, information assurance, and digital curation tools and methodologies.

Digital Services and Emerging Technologies Students learn to build digital platforms for specific user groups, create and manage digital content, and use emerging technology to provide information services.

Information Intermediation and Instruction Students learn how to help users define and articulate their information needs, help clients find information, and provide information literacy instruction.

Leadership and Management This pathway is aimed at professionals who want to upgrade their competencies to prepare for leadership roles. Courses cover topics like financial management, advocacy, grant writing, marketing, human resources management, and managing technology.

Web Programming and Information Architecture This pathway concentrates on designing, building, and managing Web-based information systems, with a focus on improving the user’s experience and tailoring technology to various information communities.

Youth Services This pathway focuses on library services for children and young adults. Courses cover program development, collection management, technology use, and emerging trends in youth services.

Outstanding FacultyOur faculty members are award-winning scholars and leaders in their academic and professional communities around the globe. Serving as investigators for grant-funded research projects, they play an instrumental role in the evolution of our field. They author books and journal articles, speak at international conferences, and lead professional associations. They contribute their expertise as scholars and educators in areas as diverse as information visualization, big data, informatics, cybersecurity, information governance, management, emerging technology, youth services, digital archives, preservation, knowledge management, and reference services. Many are former practitioners, and some are currently working in the field, bringing a practical perspective to their courses.

Interactive Online EnvironmentAs a student in our certificate program, you will participate in a collaborative learning environment with faculty members and graduate students in our school’s nationally ranked Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program.

Every course at our school is taught exclusively online. Our instructors are experts in online teaching and receive ongoing training and mentoring to stay up to date with the latest developments in online education. They use emerging technology in their courses to enrich student learning in our engaging and interactive online environment.

Our instructors and students exchange ideas and perspectives via live web conferences, recorded audio lectures, screencasts, emails, online discussion forums, blogs, instant messaging, and social networks. The multimedia format enlivens the learning experience while introducing students to the same types of tools they’ll use in their professional careers.

Our students get the preparation and technical assistance they need to be successful in our online program. Before new certificate students dive into their first courses, they are introduced to our school’s technology in a guided learning experience. This highly supported one-unit course ensures students are ready to hit the ground running and be successful in our school’s online learning environment.

The flexibility of our online program is a huge bonus for many working students. Since most coursework is delivered asynchronously, you don’t have to rearrange your work schedule in order to attend your classes in real-time. And if you take two courses each session (fall, spring, and summer), you can finish in one year!

Applying to the Post-Master’s Certificate ProgramWe’re excited you are considering earning your Post-Master’s Certificate in Library and Information Science from the San José State University School of Information. You can apply for admission in the fall or spring semester. Please check our website for application instructions and current application deadlines: ischool.sjsu.edu/certificate-admissions

Admission Requirements

• A master’s degree in any discipline • A general understanding of computers and technology• Access to a computer with Internet connection

We do not require a GMAT or GRE test, letter of recommendation, a statement of purpose, or a résumé.

TuitionFees for the Post-Master’s Certificate program are $474 per unit, with a total cost of $7,584 (16 units). Fees are subject to review and change.

AccreditationCourses in our Post-Master’s Certificate program are part of our Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) curriculum, which is fully accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). The MLIS program has been continuously accredited by ALA since 1969. In addition, San José State University is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

AboutThe San José State University (SJSU) School of Information prepares individuals for careers as information professionals. Graduates work in diverse areas of the information profession, such as user experience design, digital asset management, information architecture, electronic records management, information governance, digital preservation, and librarianship.

The SJSU School of Information is a recognized leader in online education and received the Online Learning Consortium’s 2014 Outstanding Online Program award. The school is also a member of Quality Matters (QM), a faculty driven, peer review process that is designed to certify the quality of online courses.

The SJSU School of Information began offering the Post-Master’s Certificate in Library and Information Science program in spring 2012, with the first students earning their certificates in the 2012/2013 academic year.
