I presented my master’s degree thesis on the theme of architectural design in public spaces entitled “Making Public Space Possible – The role of Communities and Collectifs in Urban Transformation” on July 23rd, 2014 at the Politecnico di Milano. I focused on certain forms of temporary reusable installments, requiring the involvement of the local population. I elaborated my research through the study of an informal French movement, whose protagonists gather in groups and associations they call “collectifs” consisting mainly of young architects. They come together to create a space called the “chantier ouvert” (the open work site), which brings together the themes of self-building and the participation of local residents. The approach favoured by the collectifs has allowed the movement to come up with some very innovative elements, feeding the contemporary debate on the issue of public spaces and sometimes calling into question some of the cornerstones of the traditional methods of architecture.

I felt that the only reasonable way to investigate the characteristics of a “possible” public space was that of research on the concrete ground of reality under consideration. Much of the material that I used to write the chapter IV, where I describe the architects’ collectif movement, was collected not only through library and internet research, but also thanks to a long period of field research. Over the last academic year I have traveled extensively, particularly in France, interviewing, working and exchanging ideas with many activists and planners, the protagonists of this movement.

The fact that my research was based on first-hand experiences makes it highly valuable from a methodological point of view, as I was able to gain a deeper knowledge and ensure that the data I collected was strongly reliable. One must take into consideration that I was studying a young movement therefore there is currently no up-to-date existing literature on this subject.

This experience not only led to a written text on the subject, but you can also discover pictures and videos in the “prezi” presentation that I created.

1. INTERNSHIP / Pyramidal Screen

subjects

The project originates from the idea of transforming a light beam, emanating from a video projector, into a voluminous form in order to create an art installation. This concept had already been tested in an experimental stage prior to my involvement in the project. This stage involved placing a succession of transparent screens in front of a projector, at a distance of around 30 cm from each other, which were intercepted by images of varying sizes which increased proportionally the further away the screens were placed from the source. The combination of these different images generated an interesting effect, both when observed from a side-on view of the “pyramid of screens,” and also when facing the pyramid. Here are the images of the preliminary experiments.

The row of screens and the projector thus formed a unit. I took part in this project during the conceptual phase, which involved figuring out how to combine multiple pyramid units in order to make the most of the aesthetic and sculptural potential of this volumetric project and turn it into an installation that could be introduced into public spaces. In the following diagrams you can see the final structure formed by the sculpture: three pyramids arranged in a triangular formation that create an interesting and complex spatial effect for a sculpture that one can only experience fully by walking 360° around it.

“You are in Chicago in 1912. You are about to witness an inexplicable wrestling match between two men and observe the downfall of a family that has moved from

the prairies to the jungle of the big city. Don’t worry your heads about the motives for the fight, concentrate on the stakes. Judge impartially the technique of the contenders,

The project area is problematic due to the presence of an infrastructure made up of two axes which interrupt the continuity and deny any possibility of a relationship between the urban fabric and the sea; these two axes are the Genoa-Ventimiglia railway line and the elevated road which is nearing completion. These two elements are placed at an average distance of forty meters and create a corridor between them which further fragments the area. It is our firm belief that if one is to attempt to reconnect the area between the sea and the city of Cornigliano, one must primarily consider the resolution of this space by making it habitable before embarking on any large-scale project proposal. It is therefore necessary that we limit the scale of the intervention to fit the ‘middle-ground’ between the two infrastructures, taking into account its complexity and paying attention to the many structural characteristics of the urban fabric surrounding it. The general strategy attempts to identify preferential corridors which may develop new spatial relations useful for structuring new physical connections (paths, openings, thresholds) but also to calculate the dimensions of the proposed architecture.

The structure of the program should reflect the vocational infrastructure of the area, especially in view of future scenarios that require the closer placement of a road junction at Via Metastasio, a consequence of the completed construction of the elevated road. It also intends to redevelop and redefine the structure of the Via San Giovanni d’ Acri today taken up by an unsightly derelict bus depot, a section of which we want to reclaim. Its current layout makes the area inhabitable. The proposal can be summarized as the construction of a multifunctional platform that will adapt to the complexity of the site, paying particular attention to open public spaces, designed to achieve a unique and feasible system which can be accessed from all directions.

2013MILANO - VIGORELLI VELODROMEARCHITECTURE, CONTEMPORARY MUSIC

placeyear

4. M2 / de-CONCENTRAZIONE

The Vigorelli velodrome is a rigid structure, designed to fulfill a specific purpose. It establishes a relationship with the outside, acting as a subtle boundary that extracts a portion of the ground from the densely constructed urban fabric. We are required to adapt the architecture so that its purpose contradicts this original concept. Contemporary music is an evolving entity which is difficult to break down into a definition, style, trend or characterization. The project attempts to represent the conflict between the container and the contents, taking into account the geometric nature of the velodrome. The form is made up symmetrical, pure shapes: two circles and a square, which also correspond to the dividing walls of the internal structure. There are two principal operations that characterize and summarize the project. The first is to isolate the central sector of the velodrome through the construction of a large overlapping roof structure which replaces the current one, emphasizing its geometrical shape and identifying the ‘center’ around which the new structure will be built. Secondly, we have proceeded to define the space for various functions. The irregular spatial volumes, at ground level or fixed to the roof, establish spatial relationships of various dimensions between them both inside the velodrome and in the uncovered areas. We aim to make a bold statement and an immediate contradiction by featuring the contrast between the random variety of the fragmented space and the strong unity of the roof cover. The variety of spaces generated by this design allows us to create spaces for exhibitions and hi-tech performances. The project imposes a new identity on the Vigorelli and offers a reinterpretation criticizing the original design. The construction required for this project however, is considered to be reversible and non-destructive as we do not want to impose a permanent, intrusive structure to the ever-changing nature of contemporary arts and music. characterization. During the semester I spent in Lyon , I had the opportunity to collaborate with the group “ Theoriz Crew” for the construction of the video -mapping event “Quand les murs nous parlent“ on 30.01.2014 at the school of architecture of Lyon. The topic to be developed as an object of animation was the story of the construction of the building. The interpretation that our working group has proposed to express the meaning of this structure was that of its “organic” nature. We have therefore interpreted the architectural space of the two atrium stairwells of the school as the chest of a human body.

“ Une architecture est vivante parce qu’elle est habitée, mais aussi parce qu’elle suscite la vie. Comme un organisme vivant, la construction est observée de l ’intérieur et observe ceux qui

l ’habitent. Conçu comme unemachine avec ses rouages, ses engrenages, ses fluides, ses

sonorités et ses ambiances, le bâtiment répond à la conception mécaniste du corps humain. ”
