G reg Wall, Pocono Manor’s Golf Professional, hosts several
Golf Classes annually. Here is Greg’s Tip for April 2016:
“Store the WOOSH!”
Many golfers uncock their left wrist too soon on the downswing,
causing the club to make a WOOSH sound too early, resulting in a
loss of power and accuracy. This is usually caused by the right hand
or arm taking over on the downswing.
Pull the butt-end of the club with the last three fingers of the left hand and let the weight of
the club create the WOOSH through the impact area!

2016 Membership Benefits:
S
o, during conversations with a few friends, you’ve mentioned that it would be nice to get
away and play a round or two of golf. Several people expressed an interest, but nobody
stepped forward and offered to plan it.
Admittedly, planning a successful outing can seem a bit daunting, but with a little planning, it
can result in an enjoyable and relaxing time for everyone. At the Pocono Manor, a large
percentage of our golf groups return year after year and often book their preferred dates and
tee times 2 or 3 years in advance.
Okay, back to you: The first thing on your ‘to do’ list should be choosing a date. Are your
potential invitees able to meet up midweek, or are they only available on weekends? Bear in
mind that all golf courses are at a premium on weekends, and their rates will reflect that. For
the best deals, try to pick dates that fall between Monday–Thursday.
Next, choose a location that is convenient for your players – ideally no more than a 3-4 hour
drive for overnight visits, or 1-2 hours for a one day event.
A typical overnight outing will include an
early afternoon tee time on the day of
arrival, dinner that evening, overnight
accommodations, breakfast and an early
tee time the next morning. If you plan to
stay for an additional day or two, the same
itinerary will work for the second day –
make an afternoon tee time either at the
same course, or another local course, then
back to the hotel for dinner, overnight
Now that you’ve chosen the date and location, the next step is to contact those friends and
family members who originally expressed an interest, and get them signed up! You may need
to be flexible on your chosen date at this point, as the goal is to find a date that the majority of
people can commit to.
Once you have a firm date, it’s time to contact your chosen venue and request rates and
availability for your group. The more information you can provide at this point, the better,
accommodations, breakfast and an early tee time the next day, leaving the afternoon for
the journey home.
such as how many nights you need accommodations, how many rooms will be needed per
night (typically players will double up and share a room to keep the costs down, but request
both single and double rates from the venue, so that you can have both options to offer your
players). Let the venue know how many rounds of golf you anticipate playing and your
preferred tees times, to ensure that you get the maximum playing time once you arrive.
Include the number of meals that you would like to have included, such as breakfast, lunch or
dinner – these meals are often discounted when included in a package and can save you
several dollars over the course of an outing. The other advantage of requesting a package rate
is that all applicable taxes, etc., will also be included, so that you can give your players a
definite total to work with.
Once you have an acceptable quote from the venue, and
your potential players have agreed to it, it’s time to lock
in your dates – the venue will issue you with a contract
(make sure you are clear on whether everyone will be
paying individually, or if you will be charging everything
to a master account). Once you have signed and returned
the contract, the hardest part of your job is done!
*Most venues will require a small deposit, which will be
applied to your account and used to pay the final bill.
Two or three weeks before your arrival date, a catering
manager will contact you to review menu choices and go
over the final details for your outing. You can add a
hospitality room with beverages, etc., if you wish, or take
advantage of other activities and attractions that the
venue may offer.
Remember, Golf outings can range in size from a couple of people to 100 or more. If this is
your first time planning something like this, then keeping the number small may be the way to
go. Once you have a couple of trips under your belt, you can always extend the invitation to
more people.
We welcome the opportunity to work with you on a memorable golf outing. Please contact us
to start the ball rolling! (570) 243-4015 or [email protected]
