PIPE SUPPORT PROP
Temporary or permanent support for cut out pipework
The Steve Vick Pipe Support Prop is an adjustable, robust strut which is designed to keep the cut-out ends of gas pipes securely in place.
The Support Prop comes in two sizes - 24mm and 30mm diameters. Both Support Props have an extension of approximately 100mm. One, two or three props are used according to the diameter of the pipe (see chart overleaf).
The Support Prop is also used in the Steve Vick International Live Riser Transfer procedure (see diagram above) where it is employed to support the cut-out riser once the new PE riser has been installed. Live Riser Transfer is carried out as a Contract Service.

Support Prop
A safe, robust strutfor cut-out gas
pipesThe most common use for the Pipe Support Prop is during flowstopping operations on cast iron or ductile steel gas mains. It is usual for the live cut end to be capped off which may lead to a potential loading of gas. Fitting the Support Prop acts as a temporary strut to avoid the risk of ‘blow off ’ before the cut-out is permanently fixed in place with concrete.

Extensive trials have been carried out on the Steve Vick International Support Prop to determine its performance and includes a safety factor of 4:1.
The chart shows below which size Prop to use for which combination of pipe diameter and cap end load. Two or three Props are used for larger diameters.
The table below summarises what size and number of support props are needed depending on the size of the main and based on Medium Pressure up to 2Bar.
