Framing – What is it?

n Framing is one of the elements of composition which is often forgotten about or neglected

n Simply using other objects in your photograph to frame or emphasise the main subject

n Leading the eye to a defined focal point

Framing – What can be a frame?

n Anything can be used to frame a subjectn Natural frames

n caves, trees, foliage, vines etc.n Man-made frames

n Doorways, windows, bridges, archways, reflections from sunglasses and mirrors etc.

What you need to do

n Find an interesting subject to photographn Use your eyes and look for a frame to highlight it

¨ Look for things you can “shoot through” such as fences, curtains, flowers, doorways etc.

n Focus on the subject – NOT the foreground element in the frame

n You can frame on just one or two sides; or you can completely surround your subject

Camera settings

n Personal choicen I used Manual mode (M) and took test shots to

get the exposure right ¨ Getting the correct exposure can be tricky; images

might end up being either under or over-exposed n Use evaluative metering as a starting point and

switch to spot if the results are not pleasing. ¨ You might have to experiment as the conditions will

be different

Camera settings

n f/8 as a starting pointn Aim for a shutter speed of at least TWICE the

focal length of the lens being used (if being hand held)

n ISO 200 as a starting pointn RAW or Auto WBn Experiment and use what you like the best

AIMS+1 (Aperture, ISO, Metering, Shutter Speed, + White Balance)13
