A considerable number of photos are rejected due to common, avoidable errors. Please take the time to thoroughly read the photospecifications on this page. The passport application will be rejected if the photos do not meet these specifications. Toavoid further delays, we suggest that you print a copy of our checklist to take with you to your photographer.
Quantity
TWO identical photos produced from the same film, or from the same electronic file capturing the digital image, are required foreach passport.

Smiling
Wrong format
The photos provided will be printed in the passport. In order for our equipment to read the photo correctly, applicants areasked not to smile.
Photos must be taken against a plain white or light-coloured background so that the applicant’s features are clearlydistinguishable against the background. There should be enough contrast between the background and the traits or
clothing.
Shadows are unacceptable. Lighting must be uniform to avoid shadows across the face or shoulders, around the ears orin the background.
There must be no reflection or glare on the face or glasses. Applicant must show a neutral facial expression (no smiling, mouth closed) and look straight at the camera.
Eyes must be open and clearly visible. Glasses, including tinted prescription glasses, are acceptable as long as the eyesare clearly visible and there is no glare in the glasses. Sunglasses and red eyes are unacceptable.
Photos must show a full head without any head covering, unless it is worn for religious beliefs or medical reasons. However, both edges of the face must be clearly visible.
Photos must show a full front view of the face and top of the shoulders squared to the camera (the image of the face andshoulders must be centered in the photo).
Photos must be clear, sharp and in focus.

Photographer
You must be a commercial photographer to provide acceptable passport photos.
The name of the photographer or studio, the address and the date the photo was taken (not the date the photo wasprinted) must be provided directly on the back of one photo (see illustration above). The photographer may handwrite
this information. Stick-on labels are unacceptable. Sufficient space must be allowed for the name of the applicant, the
signature of the guarantor and the guarantor’s declarat ion.
Guarantor
One photo must be signed by a guarantor as a true likeness of the applicant, unless the passport application is being
made through the Simplified Renewal Application Process. If that is the case, no guarantor is necessary.
A notary seal must not be imprinted on the photos.
Children
Photos must show the child’s head and shoulders only. Parent’s or child’s hands must not appear in the photo. PassportCanada recognizes the difficulty in obtaining a neutral expression of a newborn and will allow for some tolerance in thisregard.

Standard photographic print sizes are used in photographic printing. Cut sheets of paper meant for
printing photographs are commonly sold in these sizes.
They are often denoted with a code of the format n R, where the number n represents the length of the
shorter edge in inches. In the normal series, the long edge is the length of the short edge plus 2 inches
(10" or less) or 3 inches (11" and above). The alternative Super series, denoted Sn R, has an aspect
ratio of 3:2 (or as close as possible) and thus provides a better fit for standard 135 film(35mm) at sizes of
8 inches or above.
In Japan, the same print sizes (and several additional ones) are known by different names. The
Japanese L is equivalent to 3R, while 2L — twice the size— matches 5R. KG represents the size of a
traditional 4"×6" (4R) Japanese postcard (hagaki ).[1]
The n P or cut (切り kir i ?) series are defined in
reference to a full page size (全紙 zensh i ?) of 457×560 mm, with smaller numbers (fewer cuts)
indicating larger sizes.[2]
Unlike ISO 216 paper sizes, the aspect ratios of photographic prints vary, so exact scaling of prints is not
always possible. However, there are some logical correspondences between the sizes, noted below when
applicable.
Many of the standard sizes are the same as sheet film formats, and are appropriate for making contact
sheets from these films.
