Halfway
It seems like we just arrived, but we've
already completed
half of our time
and
study here at the Spanish Language Institute. This first
tri
mester was
nothing
like
we
expected, but we have been able
to
learn a lot of S pc in is h in four months.
Our
fluency seems miles
away
still, but
our
comprehension is much improved and we can
get our point or
question
out if our listeners
will
have
enough
patience
Up to now we
have studied only
the present, past and
future
tenses, so we have
a
long
ways
to go. And, little by
little, our
vocabulary increases as we
study and pick up new
words in
conversation. The second
trimester
begins
January
11,
and
we
are hoping to
make
lots of progress before
we
have to
leave in
April.
Many say that
Spanish
really
begins to
fall
into
place in this term,
so
we are
hoping
they are right.
We
are frustrated by
being here and not
being actively involved
in
direct
ministry, but are finding
some ways
to serve here,
We are looking forward
to
being
in
Chile,
and know
already
that
there will still be much
to
learn before we take
a
completely
active part in
planting
churches. Keep
praying for us

We begin havLns graduates within 3-4 weeks, and
we
offer
home classes
to
them, especially focusing in on
fam

Most graduates want j t h e classes. They usually last
four weeks and almost always result in conversion and baptism.
Churches. The converts are then encouraged
to
beg in meeting
together with
a
leader already selected
and
prepared,
and
a
church
is formed immediateily. They will usually meet two or
three times
a week
for
teajching,
prayer, praise and
the

and
maturity are
the
next goal,
and, of
course,
this will

Leadership. Leaders
of these new

churches. They work with

converts, and
can
begin
daughter churches within
few

Hello,
again
As you
read
this you
probably
have
turkey
and
cranberry
sauce
in
your
mind--if
not in
your
mouth. (Want to t rade places
for a
day or
so?)
It*s the
holidays that
bring our thoughts homeward and
make us
think of what it would be
like
to be there.
For
me, the thought
of watching a football
game on T.V. while
enjoying the golden aroma of
a
baking turkey
could drive
me
crazy (steady
there.
Woody). I
think
I
enjoy the waiting about as much as the devouring--especially when it's
with family. Well,
God
may time the
birth
of
our
new baby
to
help us
get our mind on other things--due date
is
November 20th--so
it's
pos
sible we'll survive
Thanksgiving. Christmas will be
different
since
my parents will be here
in
Chile for three weeks in December and
Jan
uary. Now
if
we could only get Nelda's family down here,
that

The
fact
is that we are grateful to so many of you
who
are helping
us to
be
here--with
prayers, financial help, letters and concern.
Your sharing in the
venture
makes
it
seem
as
if we're
not
so far away,
and that
we
are not
here
alone.
We
give
you thanks, and

I t s happening
Being
involved in the
ministry
here
is not
always
the best place to
evaluate
and
appreciate
it. Allow me to step outside for a minute and
briefly report on how the
overall
team effort
is
going here in
Chile.
Perhaps I can characterize it best with the words growth, immaturity
and opportunity. Growth is seen in the rising
strength
of
individual
congregations,
most of
which
are only
a
year or
two
old. Each one is
adding members
and
building Bible principles
into
the body. We also
see
growth in the
expansion
of the
church in
starting
new works.
There
have been seventeen new churches added so far this year, most of which
look
as if they will make
it. Recent special
meetings
in four
of the
churches
have
resulted
in
scores of
conversions
and
a
new strength
and
impetus to the
congregations
involved. We are
encouraged
by
this
growth, and rejoice in what God
has
been doing
during
the last twelve
months.
(My
part in this
is
working with one of the new churches
in
Santiago, and helping t o produce material for leaders and
churches.)
There-is also a certain
measure
of immaturity in the work. Many of
the believers
are new
Christians, and even many of
our
best leaders
have
been
following the
Lord
only
two or
three
years. Therefore we
8/18/2019 Phillips Woody Nelda 1977 Chile
9/9
see many still struggling with f a i t i ly and
marriage
problems, some
evidences of legalism, and a
failure
to tackle church problems with
Biblical principles.
We
are
not
alarmed by
this,
since
it's natural
in
new
believers and
new
churches t
o
exhibit these signs of insta
bility. It does point out
the
m a s j s ive job we have
of
educating
and
demonstrating God's
way of
doing things. We are working with several
churches in teaching first principles--repentance, love, obedience
to Jesus, giving.
Lord's
Supper, piayer--as well as practical subjects
such as the use of the tongue, sol\ing family problems,
witnessing
and
trusting
God.
We
also work directly with the leaders
so
that they
can grow and
lead effectively
in their congregations. It's
not a
speedy process, but a necessary one
