Personal Branding as it relates to
career & personal management and
the tools available to represent
ourselves
Is personal branding a Recent Trend?
"You're branded, branded,
branded, branded.... The good
news -- and it is largely good
news -- is that everyone has a
chance to stand out. Everyone
has a chance to learn,
improve, and build up their
skills. Everyone has a chance
to be a brand worthy of
remark."
- Tom Peters, author of "The Brand
Called You", Fast Company (August 1997)
Why is Personal Branding a Big Deal Now?
The means of communicating our personal brand has rapidly evolved and
exponentially with the internet, email, and now social media via smart technologies.
Personal Brand = Perception
It's about....
It's about....
Personal Brand is a perception or emotion maintained
by somebody other than you, that describes your
outstanding qualities and influences that person's
relationship with you.
- David McNally & Karl D. Speak , Authors of Be Your Own Brand:
Achieve more of what your want by being more of who you are, 2nd
edition (2011)

Important Encounters
A first impression is
usually made in less than
30 seconds.
Studies have shown it can
take 20 new interactions
to change that first
impression.

“Personal branding is about managing your name
— even if you don't own a business — in a world of
misinformation, disinformation, and semi-
permanent Google records. Going on a date?
Chances are that your “blind” date has Googled
your name. Going to a job interview? Ditto.”
- Tim Ferriss, Author of the 4-Hour Work Week (2009)
Quick Tip: buy your domain name (i.e. www.janesmith.com). This way
your domain name comes up on the 1st page of a google search
