iving and working in Penarth...’the garden by the sea’, is a dream come true. Who wouldn’t want to live here?

By day I manage Puravida Boardriders and spend the rest of my time being a busy mum and wife, trying to squeeze in time to write my book and SUP....that’s Stand Up Paddle boarding in case you wondered.

It was an honour to be invited by the Penarth View to be a regular columnist. So when I started writing my wish list and all my favourite places I wanted to promote, it struck me how lucky I am to live in such a colourful seaside town.

No matter what the weather, this coastal resort is a fabulous place to live and in this column I would like to take the opportunity to write about all the amazing places to visit and things to do, keep you up to date with all the coastal activities throughout the year and perhaps throw in a couple of secret gems you may like to stumble upon.

I hope you enjoy my column and I welcome any feedback you may have.

Here is my top 5 best bits about living in Penarth...Living by the coast is good for our health & wellbeing

Penarth Pier for Fish n Chips and a yummy ice cream, why not even try crabbing along the shore.

Stroll along the cliff tops & stop to have a picnic, why not pop by Foxy’s for some nibbles n cake

n the one hand, a fixed rate gives certainty of mortgage payment. But with interest

rates so low, a tracker mortgage might be cheaper in the short term.

It’s not an easy decision. Bank base rate has been 0.5% since March 2009, so trackers have been good value. But if base rate increases – and one day it must – borrowers with trackers will see their payments go up.

Fixed rates are safer. You’re guaranteed a rate and payment for a specific period. The disadvantage is they are generally more expensive than the equivalent tracker rate, so there’s a price to pay for piece of mind.

So which do you choose? Well, ask yourself what would happen if base rate increased by 1%? This may seem unlikely, but it could. If it did, a £100,000 capital & interest tracker mortgage with twenty years to run at a rate of 3.5% would see repayments increase by around £53 per month if the rate increased to 4.5%.

If that would cause a problem, you might be better off with a fix.

The third way is to hedge your bets by putting half the mortgage on a fixed rate, and half on a tracker.

Both would need to be with the same lender of course, and not all lenders offer this ‘split’ facility. Also, watch out for lenders fees – some will charge an arrangement fee on both the tracker and fixed elements.

As ever, there are no hard and fast rules as to which is right for you. If you’re on a tight budget, it’s probably better to go for a fix. If you have plenty of spare cash left over each month, or your mortgage is quite small, a tracker might be better. And if you go 50/50, you’ll be half right, and half wrong!

Do some research, get some advice, and don’t worry if you’ve taken out a fixed rate, only to see cheaper rates coming on the market. No one has a crystal ball, so don’t beat yourself up about it!

As a boutique, Arbuthnot Opticians prides itself on offering high-quality products that customers are proud to wear. As an experienced opticians they also have the ability to carry out more specialist contact lens fitting such as orthokeratology - a type of contact lens that can be worn comfortably overnight. This leaves excellent vision in the daytime without contact lenses or glasses. It’s a perfect reversible alternative to those not yet willing to take the leap into laser surgery.

Justine has worked in all areas of child care for over thirty years and is firmly of the opinion that above all children need to be happy and relaxed in their surroundings, and staff need to feel valued and appreciated for the care they give to each child.

Oh! Organic helps your skin stay Oh! Natural

What you put on your body has as much effect as what you put in it so it’s important to know exactly what you’re putting on it day to day. When using Oh! Organics you can feel completely confident knowing that all the products are made with natural ethically sourced ingredients, giving your skin the best treatment possible.

Michele Daramat, a fully qualified Medical Herbalist, noticed changes in her skin as she got older, as all people do. When searching for a suitable product to look after her skin she felt bombarded with ad-verts, without really understanding what the products did or what ingre-dients were used. As an aromathera-pist Michele understood the natural power of plants and decided to make her own skin care ranges with natural substitutes that would do the work of chemicals. Based on the principles of luxury, natural, organic, ethical and affordable her two core skin care ranges were born.

The Rose Range was developed for people to look after their skin as they got older. Michele wanted to create products that performed as the expensive brands did, but using ingredients as natural as possible. All the ingredients in this range have been chosen for their anti-ageing properties, such as improving skin elasticity, promoting collagen pro-duction, reducing wrinkles, increas-ing hydration and retaining moisture. Not only are the products extremely

beneficial, but they’re also practi-cal, as they will sink into your skin without leaving a greasy film on it, so that you can easily apply make up after using it.

Michele’s Melissa Range was origi-nally developed for her daughter who was having problems with find-ing a moisturiser that would balance out her combination skin type so that she could apply makeup to her face and it would stay on. The range developed as Michele realised that younger skin can be dry, oily, normal or a combination of these, which is often due to stress and hormonal changes. The ingredients used in this range work to balance these differ-ent skin types making it easier to apply longer lasting makeup.

Both ranges are complete with a moisturiser, toner and body cream, so that you can make sure every inch of you get the best care. All products are handmade in small batches, enabling you to use the plants around you enhance your skin and your life!

Whatever your age it’s never too late to start looking after your skin in the most natural way possible.

Dear Reader

Although I personally do not want summer to end, what a washout of a summer it has been! However the fashion industry never stops and coming through the doors with gusto are the lovely autumn/winter outfits and although there are the usual dark base colours there are lots of lovely warm colours to make winter that bit brighter!

Already in the shop is a fantastic array of coats/jackets in a compilation of shades that suit all skin tones. There are lots of chocolates, burnt oranges and mustards which together give a great look for Autumn 2012! Patterns are big this season with Adini leading the way in their array of tunics in various colours and styles. Tunics continue to be popular for a second winter as their versatility is wide over jeans, jeggings, leggings and trousers - spoiled for choice.

Dresses are also strong - especially knitted in lovely colours. Our first Autumn winter window has ‘blues and ‘burnt oranges’ which are really

colourful and vibrant. There are boiled wool jackets and coats and Sahara’s range is fabulous. Several new labels have their first airing i.e. Jensen another Danish brand is arriving to add to our other Danish labels which includes Intown/Miss Baron our quirky label and always has interesting pieces to offer. The Zele collection is fabulous all in natural fabrics and interesting designs; this is also a totally fair-trade product alongside Adini.

Not to be outdone, I have gone to town on accessories with jewellery from Mint, Dante, Isle of Bute and a new range called PACHA which has great statement pieces at even better great prices. Fascinators, vintage ‘dress’ bags and scarves at all price levels and colours add to help make winter vibrant.

This is a snippet of what to expect at Gingers this Autumn and I do hope you will pop in and have a browse. Penarth has a super array of Independent small shops serving the Community please have a look and shop with us.

We participate in the SIP card offering 10% on accessories. STOP PRESS - 04 OCTOBER FASHION SHOW FOR ST, AUGUSTINES in their Parish Hall. Tickets £5.00

Pura Vida Boardriders Jim Brooks-Dowsett, is now creating a positive buzz in the world of local football by sponsoring the team players/coaches with Puravida hoodies. As a local resident in Penarth and an ex pupil at Stanwell High, Jim wanted to show his passion and commitment to the young footballers by signing an annual sponsorship deal to get the team looking smart ready for training in September.

The coaches fill us in about the Pura Vida effect:

“We have just set up a new team with Penarth Town AFC for under 13 boys and are looking forward to a great new season under their name.

Teams like ours not only provide the boys with regular exercise but will help to broaden their discipline and character, on and off the field, which is invaluable to their future endeavour.

We are delighted that Puravida, a local business, has agreed to help us out this year in the form of sponsorship. As you can imagine, there is a lot of expenses involved in managing a team like this.

Puravida’s contribution is not solely a charitable contribution but also fantastic link between the club and

We are very excited to announce that Puravida Boardriders are one of the new sponsors at Penarth Town AFC under 13’s team.

local businesses. Not only have they offered to provide some kit but also agreed to give the boys some taster sessions out on the water.

The boys were so excited when they were told that they were being sponsored by a ‘cool’ surf shop and are already chomping at the bit to have a go at some water sports. I know that several of the boys have already visited the shop and can been seen walking round Penarth proudly wearing their Puravida tops. In fact this summer our Puravida hoodies have been seen in the sun of Florida, on the beaches in Greece and Turkey, sightseeing in Tunisia and surfboarding in Cornwall to name a few.

We hope that this will grow into a really exciting partnership and not only help support the local football team but also encourage the boys to try new, exciting sports and activities being run in their local area. Without the support of people like this, these things would not be possible and we will not be able to reach our goals.

Thank you once again for your generous support of our team.”

bombarding existing and potential mortgage customers it often seems hard to know where you fit into all these headlines and what is on offer to you. It would not be surprising to find that something to contradict the above has been released in the mainstream press by the time you read this.

The Learning Partnership is delighted to offer our partner professionals the opportunity to hear Baroness Susan Greenfield speak at our 2012 Autumn Conference.

What effect are technologies such as computer games, the Internet and social media having on learning and teaching?

The primary focus of Baroness Greenfield’s work explores and questions the impact of modern screen technologies on learning and teaching as well as the human brain. Today’s screen technologies create environments that could alter how we process information, the degree to which we take risks, how we socialise and empathise with others and even, how we view our own identity.Susan is fascinated as to how screen technologies such as computer games, the Internet and social media may be changing the human brain, both for good and bad. She will illustrate the potential of learning by exploring the effects of gaming, social media and interaction along with the difference between the under function and active function of the prefrontal cortex found in our brains.

s a business it is an overriding priority that you are able to communicate with potential and existing customers, others

within the company as well as any partners or contracts that you may have. TWL make communication easy. They provide expert advice for all Mitel, Toshiba and Siemens Office Telephone Systems and are fully certified installers for Hellerman Tyton data and fibre cabling. There is no communication problem that they cannot fix.

TWL was founded by Andrew Nicholson in 2003 and has already grown into a leading business in this area, securing contracts with Cardiff Metropolitan University and Moorhouse Insurance. His team of 10 fully trained staff, including a female engineer, has over 50 years of collective experience between them – ensuring that you and your business are in safe hands.

This experienced team not only has sound knowledge of the products but also provide fantastic customer care. With larger companies it is easy to get lost in their extensive

database of clients, which is why it is integral to TWL to build personal relationships with their customers. This allows them to fully understand the needs of each individual company so that they can help you and your business adapt to the ever-developing technological age.

Another benefit of their thorough customer care is their ability to offer monthly contracts, meaning there is no long-term obligation. It is not their intention to trap you into a commitment that you’re not pleased with. Their aim is to provide you with a quality service that you’re happy with, and operating on a monthly basis ensures that customer satisfaction is always met.

There is no business too big or too small for the team’s expertise. Whether you’re a new business looking to install office telephone systems for the first time, or you’re an established business that has outgrown the capabilities of your existing systems, TWL will provide you with a flexible, cost effective solution that will grow with your business and adjust to meet your ever-changing demands.

Set your sights on extensive eyecare

What is OCT? `

OCT – Ocular Coherence Tomography- is an advanced eye scan for people of all ages. Similar to ultrasound, OCT uses light rather than sound waves to illustrate the different layers that make up the back of the eye. We also capture a digital photograph of the retina ( the back of your eye) to cross-reference areas of concern.

What does OCT cost?

There is an additional charge for the OCT scan and digital photograph, but the benefits are obvious. We charge £30 for the OCT scan and digital photograph if you are entitled to an NHS Eye Examination or £55 for a Comprehensive Private Eye Examination, OCT scan and digital photograph. We believe this is a small price to pay to enjoy peace of mind knowing that your eyes are in great condition.

The scientific stuff

Using a Topcon state-of-the-art 3D OCT camera, we will take both a digital photograph and a three dimensional cross sectional scan of the back of your eye in one sitting. This usually allows us to reassure you that your eyes are healthy but also to instantly diagnose a number of common conditions. The scan is non-invasive, painless, simple and quick. What’s more, the software can automatically detect even the more subtle changes to the retina with every eye test you take. This gives you an invaluable ongoing record of the health and condition of your eyes.

Osmond Drake Opticians was established by Ossie Drake in 1958 and is now owned by Marc and Alison Drake, the 3rd generation of Drakes.

We were the 1st Optician in Penarth to offer Fundus Photography and we are now the 1st Optician in Penarth to offer OCT. OCT screening is a powerful tool to help your Optometrist safeguard your eye health. The health of your eyes matters to you and it matters to us too, which is why we are offering OCT to all our patients.

1. Age-related macular degeneration

Macular degeneration causes the gradual breakdown of the macular (the central portion of the eye). OCT cannot only identify this condition and its type (there are two types, wet and dry) but also monitor its progress, for example, if you are undergoing treatment for such a condition. Unfortunately the risk of developing macular degeneration increases with age, and it is the most common cause of vision loss in individuals over the age of fifty. 2. Diabetes

Diabetic retinopathy is a major cause of visual impairment among adults. Here in the UK, more than 2 million people have been identified as having diabetes. OCT examination enables early detection, which greatly improves the success rate of treatment.

3. Glaucoma

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve at the point where it leaves the eye. Recent statistics suggest that some form of glaucoma affects two in every 100 people over the age of 40. The danger with chronic glaucoma is that there is no pain and your eyesight will seem to be unchanged, but your vision is being damaged. An OCT examination will confirm if you are at risk, or indeed what stage of glaucoma you may have.

4. Macular holes

A macular hole is a small hole in the macular – the part of the retina which is responsible for our sharp, detailed, central vision. This is the vision we use when we are looking directly at things, when reading, sewing or using a computer. There are many causes of macular holes. One is caused by vitreous detachment, when the vitreous pulls away from the back of the eye and sometimes it does not ‘let go’ and eventually tears the retina, leaving a hole. Extreme exposure to sunlight (for example staring at the sun during an eclipse) can also cause a macular hole to develop. 5. Vitreous detachments

Vitreomacular traction can clearly be diagnosed through OCT providing invaluable information about the current relationship between the vitreous and the retinal surface of the eye. As people get older the vitreous jelly that takes up the space in our eyeball can change. It can become less firm and can move away from the back of the eye towards the centre, in some cases parts do not detach and cause ‘pulling’ of the retinal surface. The danger of a vitreous detachment is that there is no pain and your eyesight will seem unchanged but the back of your eye may be damaged.

We spoke to Marc Drake, Lead Optometrist at Osmond Drake Opticians about the Common Conditions identified through regular OCT screening...

ogan Coronation Football Club is a local football club, run by local lads, that not only puts

emphasis on footballing skills and personal fitness, but also aims to encourage respect, teamwork, social responsibility and above all fun. It was this same passion and love for the sport that inspired a similar bunch of local boys to start the club back in the late 1950s under the enthusiasm of Mr. Albert Crossman and coached by Mr. Mel Hudd.

Unlike when the club was formed, with only one team, it has now blossomed; with four senior teams and ten junior and mini teams, with age ranges from under 16’s to under 7’s, there really is room for everyone. After the club introduced junior teams in 1971 the keen young members made Cogan a force to reckon with at local league level.

Cogan does not just cover the local league, but also stretches to higher levels. Throughout the years the club has had its share of set backs. But the passion for the game spurred Cogan Coronation F.C to rebuild themselves and enter the Barry and District League - which was the first truly successful period for the club. The first XI were promoted through the divisions, becoming league champions in 1986, 1987 and 1988 seasons, and also winning the league in this period! This success was on the back of the younger teams, who won the South Wales Youth Cup in 1985, and who made the finals of the Welsh Youth Cup in 1988. Cogan was, as is to this day, a club or hardworking passionate champions.

The team has gone from strength to strength. The team’s inaugural season in the Senior League was in 1991/1992, where the club has remained ever since. Cogan Coronation A.F.C are now competing in the 1st Division of the South Wales Senior League, the reserve division Cardiff and District League and the Youth Team are continuing their success in the South Wales Youth League.

Anyone is welcome to come and try out for any team, whether you’re looking to keep fit, meet new people, have fun or just love the sport, Cogan Coronation AFC is the ideal club. There is training on various days of the week for the different teams in Cogan, all of which is designed to suit each level. The younger teams will focus on developing teamwork and basic skills while the older teams will receive more complex and harder training.

Thank you to our Sponsors

The club would like to officially thank their brilliant sponsors for their continued tremendous support.

There are regular matches for all teams, and while a competitive drive is healthy, and comes with the sport, the club never loses sight of the importance of fun. Not only do matches give an opportunity for the players to put into practice what they’ve been learning, but it’s also a great way for everyone to get show support. Some of these youngsters went one the make football their profession such as Peter Aitkin (Bristol City and Bristol Rovers), Frankie Prince (Bristol Rovers) and Darren and Jason Rowbotham (Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City). Matches are a perfect place for proud parents, friends, football fanatics and others to get involved with the community.

51 years since Cogan Coronation began, the same game is still just as loved, the hearty ambition in young players is just as strong, and the dedication to an old club is just as powerful. Last year, the club celebrated its half-century in style with a meal at the St Davids Hotel. With developmental plans and a bright future ahead, here’s to the next fifty!
