New public swimming pools forKwaNobuhle and Zwide
NCEBA DLADLA
DROUGHT in the Nelson MandelaBay Municipality is finally over; sowilling and able residents can soongo to their nearby swimming poolsandenjoy themselves again, saidMu-nicipal spokesperson Kupido Baron.
In fact, according to Baron, someof the Bay’s swimming pools haveopened their doors already whilemaintenance work and employmentof staff, which is now complete, willsoon make it possible for the remain-ing pools to open their doors.
Baron has also announced thegood news of the opening, on 1 De-cember, of two public swimmingpools, each costing R16 million, inZwide in Port Elizabeth and next tothe Indoor Sports Centre inKwaNobuhle, Uitenhage.
“A couple of years ago during theNelson Mandela Bay MetropolitanMunicipality’s Masithethisane Com-munity Outreach Programme, peo-ple of KwaNobuhle indicated strong-ly that theywanteda swimmingpool. And now, they have it,” Baron toldPE Express Indaba.
According to Baron, the publicswimming pool in Zwide was built aspart of the 2010/2011 Financial Yearbudget, adding that in the 2011/2012Financial Year the municipality willbuild a public swimmingpool in NewBrighton as well.
Local residents got employmentopportunities during the construc-tion of the pools; and will also be as-sured of employment opportunities-for their day to day maintenance, ac-cording to Baron.
Baron said residents should alsolook out for information about“Learn to swim” programmes aimedat benefitting township residentsduring school holidays.
“It is right on our doorstep, in thetownship. I want to thank our gov-ernment for this swimming pool,”said Phindezwa Tose (27), East CapeMidlands College student and moth-er of two from KwaNobuhle. Tose
said she was happy her children willnot have to go into town in order tolearn basic skills and sports likeswimming.
Nelson Mandela Bay Departmentof Sport and Recreation’s Sport and
Community Liaison ThembisileMengu said he was certain that bythe first week of December all publicswimming pools will be opened.
His department, Mengu said, wasbusy sorting out all the logistics and
problems that resulted in some poolsnot opening up as planned.
“We’ve got everything ready at theKwaNobuhle and Zwide swimming-pools, so we’ll be opening next weekfor people to come and swim,” said
Mengu.Mengu said the municipality re-
constructed the old swimming poolin Zwide. The other public swim-ming pool in the township is in 4B inMotherwell.

ADVERTORIAL: Boston CollegeBoston – epitome of professionalism
‘Professionalism is knowing how to do it,when to do it, and doing it’.
Becoming professional in the real sense ofthe word, is an ongoing process that may bafflenewcomers to the world of work, especiallythose who have not been exposed to other pro-fessional and corporate workers.
For this reason Boston City Campus andBusiness College encourages professional be-haviour from their learners, during course at-tendance, to give them exposure to profession-al expectations that they will need to meetwhen they reach the real world of work.
“Not everyone understands the need forpunctuality and meeting what is expected ofyou, but at Boston we make these part of thequalification expectations, and thus groomlearners to contribute on a meaningful scale intheir new jobs,” says Natalie Rabson of BostonCity Campus and Business College.
The problem is that what one person regardsas being professional, another one would seeotherwise.
“The bottom-line is that to be regarded as aprofessional in your field of work you have tomeet the needs of those you deal with, withoutfail,”says Rabson.
“Needs vary from employer to employer andfrom company culture to company culturewhich is why some may view you as being theepitome of professionalism while the next em-ployer thinks you’re barely competent.”
Competence is a major factor in determiningprofessionalism. As Frank Tyger puts it, “Pro-
fessionalism is knowing how to do it, when todo it, and doing it.” To be a professional is touse education, experience and training to dowork, analyse, problem-solve and make sounddecisions – all this while adhering to timelinesand behaviour that is appropriate for the par-ticular environment you’re working in.
Competence and skills are a good founda-tion, but not enough. There are other factorsthat play a role, Rabson points out. Thoughthe definitions and requirements differ, thefollowing basics are accepted widely in theworkplace as being ‘professionalism’ essen-tials:
Punctuality – a professional is on time forwork, meetings and meeting deadlines. Incases where an agreed deadline cannot bemet for good reason, he or she informs or fore-warns the relevant parties.
Taking responsibility – a professionaltakes responsibility for his actions and forthe work he delivers. This includes owningup to mistakes. It is not professional to blameoutside circumstances. It is also not profes-sional to go into elaborate explanations thathold no relevance to the task at hand.
Respect – a professional doesn’t necessari-ly have to agree with everything but needsto respect other people and their policies, pro-cedures, beliefs, values, culture and so on. Heor she needs to give others space to expressthemselves and be ‘heard’.
Appropriate dress - business suits do notdefine professionalism; however, the profes-sional situation defines which clothes youshould wear. How you look defines how peo-ple see your professional being, inside andout.
Appropriate behaviour - avoid becomingas personal at work as you would at home.Personal preferences, stories, feelings are notalways appropriate. A professional won’t dis-close confidential customer information; heor she won’t tell you that they just sold a simi-lar product to JohnnyXdown the street. Also, don’t bad mouth anyone; yet don’t hesitate toblow the whistle on wrongdoing.
Excellent work – professional people takepride in their work. They regard work asmore than merely a means to make moneyand try always to deliver to the best of theirability.
Focus on work – a professional takesbreaks and socialises but does not waste timeor focus by gossiping and complaining aim-lessly. If unhappy with something, a profes-sional takes steps to fix a ‘problem’.
Willingness to learn - professional peoplekeep up to date in their field and invest timeand money in training, researching and test-ing information from unreliable sources.
Moving up, not down – a professionaldoesn’t deviate from a level of performanceand behaviour. He or she will try and meetthe company’s expectations of them as wellas their expectations of themselves.
Being authentic – a professional is true tohim- or herself; does not pretend to be some-one else. Professional people are honest andhave personal integrity.

“ISSA is a non-profit publicbenefit organisation which de-rives its strength from preserv-ing, promoting and developingarts and culture in the countrythrough exchange programmes,

Elok’shini Arts Programmewill be held from November 28to December 9 at the RaymondMhlaba Sports Centre in Moth-erwell where different artforms, music genres and dancewill be on offer.
“It will be a mixture of shar-ing exercises, participatoryworkshops and presentations
culminating in a spectacularday-time processional theatrepiece, concert and dance,” saidVanto.
Vanto said the project will al-so look for participants to takepart in the Winter SchoolProject in Graaff Reinet nextyear.
The winter school will select10 young performers who willrepresent the Eastern Cape in 10days of intensive drama train-ing workshops with an equalnumber of artists from the UK.
