gas company in the world and has a staff of
over 4,000.
State-of-the-art technical pilot plants have been
built at and around the Krefeld location in Germany.
Messer runs a highly specialized technical center
in Willich. Innovative processes for cold grinding
and recycling of materials are developed here. A
new technical center focusing on applications in
the welding and cutting segment has also been
opened. The welding and cutting segment is part
of the Messer Group’s traditional portfolio.

The Supervisory Board
“The Messer Group concentrates their efforts on
two specific aims: satisfied customers and an
intact company culture.
Instead of operating as independent and separate
units, we can best achieve these goals by working
and communicating with each other. This allows us
to see processes more clearly and find solutions to
even the most difficult of tasks more easily.”

How air separation works
At Messer, air is the raw material from which the
individual gaseous components oxygen, nitrogen
and argon, as well as the rare inert gases krypton
and xenon are extracted in their purest form. We
obtain these pure gases using air separation units.
These are utilized in a number of industrial pro-
cesses to make them both safe and profitable.
The air is drawn in large compressors for com-
pression. The gas mixture is cooled until its
liquid stage in heat exchangers. This occurs at
extremely low temperatures of up to negative
196 degrees. Since the individual air components
vaporize at different temperatures, they can be
separated in tall separation columns and extracted
in their pure form.

the country’s leading producers of industrial gases.
An air separation plant, two acetylene plants, two

Elme Messer K has been operating in the Russian
enclave of Kaliningrad since 1999. This city, located
between Poland and Lithuania, has around 1 million
residents. A filling plant and three gas centers help
to supply this area with the entire portfolio of gases
that Messer has to offer.
Kaliningrad is an important strategic pillar in the
Baltic region within the entire Elme Messer orga-
nization.
Hospitals, refrigerator manufacturers and shipyards
are the main customers of gases and gas applicati-
ons. Its geographical location within the EU and
access to the Baltic Sea provide Kaliningrad with its
outstanding potential for future economic success.
Founded in 1989, Messer Italia is one of the
leading suppliers of CO2 in Italy today. Our main
customers are leading manufacturers from the
food and beverage, chemical and metallurgy
sectors, who all profit from the high product
quality, safe supply and outstanding service.
The company has a total of six locations
throughout the country, in Turin, Genoa, Rome,
Naples, Bari and Salerno.
Messer Italia offers its customers the entire range
of liquefied and compressed gases as well as
specialty gases, some of which are used in me-
dical applications. The product portfolio is being
expanded continuously thanks to the ever
increasing expertise in gas and application tech-
nologies.

Riga-based Elme Messer L has supplied the
Latvian market with a comprehensive range of
cylinder and liquefied gas products since 1999.
A state-of-the-art air separation unit was installed
in Liepaja in 2000, allowing for the production of
oxygen, nitrogen and argon. This plant, which sup-
plies the market with liquefied gases, is the only
one of its kind in the Baltic region. The air separa-
tion unit supplies the only steel plant in the Baltic
region, Liepaja Metalurgs, with oxygen and nitro-
gen via a pipeline.
With eight gas centers and 12 distribution partners,
Elme Messer L ensures that companies all over
the Latvian republic are supplied with the products

Messer Vardar Tehnogas enjoyed successful gro-
wth over the past seven years: the filling plant for
oxygen and carbon dioxide was expanded, and 12
new gas centers were opened.
Based in Skopje, Messer Vardar Tehnogas was
founded in 1997 as a wholly owned subsidiary
of the Messer Group and operated with five
employees.
The company currently has 13 employees and
distributes the entire range of products that the
Messer Group has to offer.
Elme Messer Lit, located in Vilnius, has been sup-
plying the Lithuanian market with industrial gases
and services from the Messer Group since 1999.
Filling plants for industrial gases in Vilnius, Siaulial
and Klaipeda in addition to 14 gas centers ensure
that cylinder gases can be supplied reliably and
economically. Lithuania has considerable potential,
especially in the areas of agricultural and food
production.
Due to the high volume of gases they require,
a separate fleet supplies the large shipyards in
Klaipeda, on the Baltic coast. Messer’s own
telemetry system is standard equipment for the
tank facilities here, measuring the customers’
consumption to ensure that deliveries from the
production plant in Liepaja, Latvia arrive “just
in time”.

share of the market for liquid and compressed
argon and mixtures as well as acetylene.
The Messer Group has been active in the Polish
market since 1992, with headquarters located in
Chorzów and 120 gas centers throughout the
country. Application technology specialists in

Messer became active in Peru in 1996 with the
purchase of seven family-owned companies. Ini-
tially, four small air separation units were operat-
ed along the west coast of Peru. Since 1998, the
seven individual companies have been operating
under the name Messer Gases, which was later
changed to Messer Gases del Peru.
In 1998, Messer Gases del Peru installed a new
air separation unit capable of producing 450 tons
per day to ensure supplies to a leading steel
manufacturer in Chimbote, located north of the
Pervian capital.
Production surpluses from this facility are brought
to the market by eight sales agencies, most of
which are located along Peru’s west coast.

Serbia and Montenegro
Messer Tehnogas is a traditional supplier of techni-
cal and medical gases in Serbia and Montenegro.
The company was founded in Belgrade in 1929,
and the majority of shares were purchased by the
Messer Group in 1997.
The main production site is the air separation unit
in Smederevo, which is linked to the steel plant
U.S. Steel Serbia via a pipeline. The second large
air separation unit is located in Merosina, near Niš.
Both facilities are important sources for liquefied
gases throughout the Balkans. The local gas busin-
ess here is closely linked to chemical production.
This is especially true for Pančevo, the heart of
Serbia’s chemical industry, but also for Odžaci in
the Vojvodina region. Messer Tehnogas supplies
customers from the industrial, health, food and
beverage, environmental protection and security
industries with liquefied and cylinder gases.
