From the Pastor’s Desk

Beloved OLPH family members,

On September 14, we celebrate the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. This feast traces its origin to Jerusalem and the dedication of the church built on the site of Mount Calvary in AD 335. Emperor Constantine legalized Christianity and authorized excavation of some of the holy sites of Christ’s life. By the fifth century, pieces of crosses were uncovered by Constantine’s mother, Helena. A miraculous healing took place when a sick woman was touched with one piece, proof that it was a section of the actual cross of Christ.

But the meaning of the cross is deep. During Jesus’ time, Romans used crucifixion as a sign that they were in power. Anyone who was a threat to the throne was rendered powerless, and humiliated by being hung on a cross. However, Jesus’ death transformed the shameful cross into a sign of triumph and victory, a story of salvation, and the most powerful weapon against evil. During our suffering let us look up to the Cross, and as we make the Sign of the Cross, let us remember what the cross stands for, in our life.

On September 15, we commemorate the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. Mother Mary stood at the foot of the cross - she stands by us too in times of our sorrow.

With love,RoyachanRev. Fr. Roy MoolechalilOLPH Mission Director

“For where two or three meet in my name, I am there among them (Mathew 18:20)”. Prayer is simply talking to God. Prayer is the only direct contact we have with God. Family prayer is the time we thank God for all He has done for us. Although praying alone is important, praying with a group of people is stronger and comes with many benefits.

Family prayer teaches kids to trust in God. Ever since I was young, my family and I would always pray together. When a family begins to pray together as the children are young, this establishes a routine. “Actions speak louder than words”. Kids need to see their parents praying in order to understand that they too can have a relationship with God. Having this routine started at a young age instills in the kids to always pray. Since my parents made it a routine for my brother and I to pray every night as a family, I can proudly say I have a strong relationship with God.

Praying as a family not only enhances your personal relationship with God but your personal relationships in life. The bond between you and the members of your family grows stronger each time you pray together because God is there protecting your family and bringing you closer to one another. You can create a safe space during family prayer which always opens you to one another. In my family, before we start praying we all like to talk about our day and what we did. This safe space gives all of us a chance to openly talk about how we feel and helps us get closer and have a more intimate family prayer with God.

I strongly recommend praying the two prayers below everyday along with the family prayer:

Prayer to St. Joseph: Saint Joseph, father and guardian of virgins, into whose faithful keeping were entrusted Innocency itself, Christ Jesus, and Mary, the Virgin of virgins, I pray and beseech thee through Jesus and Mary, those pledges so dear to thee, to keep me from all uncleanness, and to grant that my mind may be untainted, my heart pure and my body chaste; help me always to serve Jesus and Mary in perfect chastity. Amen.

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel: St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen
