Our Mission Our Lady of Mount
Carmel Catholic Parish is one family
in Christ.
We: • Love God and neighbor. • Pray in the celebration of the
Sacraments and receive grace. • Serve sacrificially with time,
talent and treasure. • Proclaim the good news of
Salvation.
Empowered by the Holy Spirit, and with Mama Mary to help us, we journey in hope to Heaven.

WHAT TO WEAR TO MASS? We like to see you in church….just not too much of you. All kidding aside, summer is upon us, and this is as good a time as any to reflect on the appropriate attire for Mass. Two virtues should inform our decisions on what to wear, modesty and reverence. Modesty is a virtue related to chastity; “it means refusing to unveil what should remain hidden….It inspires
one’s choice of clothing” (Catechism, 2521-2533). Reverence means to regard or treat with deep respect. Reverence for the majesty of the Mass, for the presence of Christ in the Eucharist, implies that we do not dress too casually for the Mass. “Dressing up” shows respect for an occasion and other persons. People still dress up (usually) for job interviews, important meet ings, banquets, weddings, and funerals. Dressing up for Mass says to myself and the others present, “This is important, this is special.” Shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops, jeans, tennis shoes, and workout clothes should not be worn to Mass. Gentlemen should at least wear slacks and a collared shirt. Ladies should wear a long dress or skirt/slacks with an appropriate top. For those who think this is too much, ask how it would affect you if the presiding priest at Mass stood at the altar, offering the Holy Sacrifice, wearing shorts and a T-shirt. Might it not inhibit your ability to be in a prayerful, reverential state of mind? Know that the assembly joins the priest in offering the sacrifice, and so your dress is an important part of the signs and symbols that go into a reverent celebration. Many women do not see the harm in wearing a short skirt or low-cut shirt. But as a priest, I am aware of the struggles of many faithful Catholic men to be pure of heart. Men are visually stimulated to a degree and in a way that women are not. Immodest dress becomes an occasion of sin for others. And so my sisters in Christ, please prayerfully consider the effect of your fashion choices on your brothers in Christ. Our Lady of Fatima said in 1917, “Certain fashions will be introduced that will offend Our Lord very much.” While specifying what constitutes modest dress is debatable, I suggest the following norms for modest dress at Mass: Clothing should cover the body from at least the knees to the neck, as well as the shoulders. It should not be too tight. For those of you who dress well at Mass, thank you! Some of you do a great job of dressing your children up, and I’m sure it’s not an easy task. But I want you to know that I appreciate it very much. Keep us the good work! --Fr. Anthony
