Melodies And Memories
Those were the days, my friends
How quickly four years pass! We arrived Friday, September 11, 1970 to tackle this new experience called "college. " Remember the beanies we all had to buy and some of us actually wore for several days? And the beanie court in Cole Hall? Or the way we were assimilated into the swing of things here with the orientation programs, the placement tests, and the faculty reception? We soon became a part of things, as much as the heroes of stories upperclassmen told us in the dorms, as they showed us the ropes.
We have seen a lot of things evolve at BC despite frequent student comments on the way major changes come slowly here. In the academic field, the biggest change we saw was the switch our sophomore year from the two-semester sy stem to the innovative 3-3-1-3 term calendar. Some of our most relevant academic experiences and wildest parties were to take place during the new interterm classes.
Social changes took many subtle forms. The rule liberalizations we saw were the abolition of the regulation prohibit-ing consumption of alcoholic beverages by BC students off campus our freshman year and the increase in number of Open Houses to ten per year our junior year. The girls gained more freedom as curfew hours were extended from 11:00 to 12:00 on weekdays and from 1:00 to 2:00 leaves on weekends, but sign out policies still prevailed.
We lived through four years of Convocations, the descendants of the old daily chapel services. Conuos became more secular, students assisted in their planning, seats were no longer assigned, we had a choice of two per week, and as seniors we were permitted the added leeway ofgoing to any seven of the nearly twenty programs offered per term.
Physically the school changed in a number of ways while we were here. We saw the infamous "cinder track" and the water-logged Riverside Field replaced in 1971 by new athletic facilities renamed in honor of BC's revered walking legend, "Doc" Jopson. The same year Memorial Hall was renovated and the music and drama programs were further upgraded with the renovation of Cole Hall our senior year. To improve facilities for dating on campus, "passion pits" were constructed in the basement of Blue Ridge and a room there was converted into a co-ed television lounge. Outdoor basketball courts were constructed, and plans were underway to construct more tennis courts and an indoor swimming pool.
The greatest excitement of four years came, though, from what we did ourselves. As a class we built Homecoming floats, sponsored hot dog sales, decorated the cafeteria for the Christmas dance our freshman year, and sponsored the junior-senior dance at Wildwood. A big event during our senior year was when the bluegrass band "Goosecreek Sym-phony" came to BC and gave the first profit-making concert here in many years. Other memories include "sock hops" which reflected a musical nostalgia for the '50's that was sweeping the country. Parties at cabins, at the Caverns, at Wildwood, at the Cliffs, at Blue Hole - remember how cars used to be lined up all the way from "the slab" to the Mennonite farmhouse? Places to go commune with nature like Reddish Knob, Hone Quarry, and Todd Lake. Ringing the bell in Memorial Hall after the Eagles scored an athletic victory and when the Vietnam ceasefire accord was signed in Paris on January 27, 1973. Celebration and a hope for brighter things yet to come.
What has it meant to be a student at Bridgewater? BC is no "utopia", but then nothing is perfect. In these past four years it has been what we have made it to be. It is the little things we want to remember: water battles in the dorms, panty raids, "Wardo Fourth", Rudy Glick math, decorating the dorms for Christmas, snowball fights, hiking on a mountainside, "Walden Pond" in front of the library on a rainy day, Thermostats in the dorms turned down to 68 in an effort to save oil during the energy crisis, the creaking of old Cole Hall's heating system and the traditional rumor of its resident ghost, headaches over broken romances, joy of new friendships made, sorrow of parting. Yes, those were our four years in college never to be forgotten, my friends.
