Meet Jessica Nuckolls Jessica Nuckolls is the newest addition to our Youth Services Department at our main branch. She moved to Orangeburg three years ago from Virginia, but now considers Orangeburg to be her home. Jessica has an Associate’s in Education, a Bachelor’s in English, and is currently getting her Master’s De-gree in Library and Information Science at the University of South Carolina.

Jessica’s love of books and reading led her to the Orangeburg County Library. Before she came to work for the OCL, Jessica was a substitute teacher for Orangeburg District 5 Schools. She and her family visited the library weekly to stock up on good reads for the whole family.

Jessica has a special interest in working with children and teens. You will frequently see Jessica assisting during “Science Saturdays” and “Get Art, Get Smart” classes in the meeting room. Jessica held the library’s first Teen Lock-In this past summer, where teens played trivia games, did arts and crafts, had a spontaneous dance party and discussed the best parts of their favorite books. She has also started TAG (Teen Advisory Group) for the li-brary. All teens are welcome to join her group and have their ideas on books, programming and movies considered by the OCL.

Jessica is seriously addicted to Young Adult books and is currently reading “Afterworlds” by Scott Westerfield. For kids who struggle with reading, she suggests, “Find something that interests you. It doesn’t have to be a big book. Read anything—a magazine, a comic book, a cereal box! My son’s first big book was a strategy guide because he wanted to learn how to play a video game.”

Jessica wants the people of Orangeburg to know how much their library cares. She says, “We care about you. We care about your children. We want you to think of the library as a safe, fun, and helpful place where you can come to learn and grow. We want you to get what you need and want from our services. Also, young people need to know that they can overcome any-thing. We all make mistakes; it’s not the end of the world!”
