What’s it like to be in our classroom?
Units of Inquiry
In Grade 2 we cover four Units of Inquiry.1). Interconnectedness Essential Questions How are living things connected? Why do living things look different? How do we know our environment is healthy? Understanding Ecosystems can help us to understand that organisms and their environments are
interconnected and that changes in one part of the system will affect other parts of the system.
Vocabulary WordsConnections, responsibility, habitats, food web, food chain, features, behaviors, survive, local environment, protect, interconnected
2). Time3). Discovery 4). Celebration
Numeracy
Everyday Math program. Each child has a workbook. We also use supplementary resources to enhance student learning and
for differentiation. In Grade 2 we use small group activities to teach the various
mathematical concepts. Every week, a lesson is set aside specifically for the development of
basic facts from 1-20 in addition and subtraction. ICT is also used to help develop numeracy skills. Children are encouraged to do logical thinking in our supplemental
Marcy Cook program
Being Literate
Writing Focus – specifically linked with the unit of inquiry being studied.
Procedural, rules, note taking, factual reports, letter writing, interviews, personal recounts, newspaper reports, imaginative writing, fairy tales, play scripts, advertisements, invitations, various forms of poetry
Organization – planning and sequencing of ideas
Sentence structure – Grammar, word choice, sentence variety, Paragraphs
Mechanics – Spelling, capitalization, punctuation (C.O.P.S – editing)
Handwriting - The basic writing skills will also be taught in D’Nelian.
Spelling - There will be no spelling homework. Twice a week the children will have a 45 min block of spelling
where they work on spelling patterns and parts of speech. The lessons will be activities based around teaching children
strategies to help them spell and read words independently.
Homework
Alfie Kohn – “there is absolutely no evidence of any academic benefit from assigning homework in elementary or middle school. For younger students, in fact, there isn’t even a correlation between whether children do homework (or how much they do) and any meaningful measure of achievement”
Reading Focus - Guided Reading, Reading Folder, CMC, Phonics Program
