Local babies are makinga big splash in theirAqua Babies classesheld at SpringwoodSchool in Swinton!
And the remarkable progress of a pair of two-year old tots, Ella Ryding and ChristopherColborn, both from Salford, has illustrated justhow effective the Aqua Babies classes can be.
“Ella is an advanced pupil who swims beautifullyunderwater for a full ten seconds. She has always enjoyed swimming and we are currentlyworking on her leg kick. She is my little fish,”says teacher Michelle Potkins, “and Christopheris swimming for over ten seconds under water,he has a brilliant leg and arm action with loadsof confidence.”
Ella’s mum Amanda said, “Ella’s dad and Iwanted her to feel safe around water and we
Big Splash with Aqua Babies!chose Aqua Babies because of its great reputation. Ella hasgained confidence inthe water and alsolearned lots of different swimmingtechniques in a funfilled environment."
Christopher’s mum Clare said: “Aqua Babies hastaught Christopher to be confident in thewater. It was also important to us that helearned about water safety, knowing he canconfidently swim to a side of the pool and gethimself out. My husband is always amazed atwhat he has achieved at such a young age."

PRIDE IN LLEYTON:Creating awareness and finding a cure for a rare genetic disorder Niemann Pick Disease
Coleen Nolan & husband Ray Fensome with Lleyton and mum Jo
Lleyton Coombes, born December 2006, livesin Salford with mum Jo & dad Lee. He was bornat Hope Hospital (Salford Royal) and spent thefirst week of his life in hospital due to havingjaundice like many other babies do, but aftersome preliminary tests he had to enduremonths of invasive tests until diagnosed withNiemann Pick Type C disease at 6 months old.
Christmas 2009 was a difficult time for thefamily as Lleyton had started to show signs ofhis condition and to deteriorate.
As Lleyton’s condition isn’t well known, our objective is to increase the awareness and understanding in the wider public.
Niemann Pick is neurological illness that is lifelimiting and a very rare disease. Life expectancyis 10-15yrs of age depending on age at diagnosis. Those affected will usually develop dementiaas a symptom of the disease.
There are only 50-80 children diagnosed withthis condition in the UK and about 500 worldwide.Due to the low occurrence, there is NO Government funding for support or research, and funds have to be raised privately, relying onthe generosity of the public for donations.
Children are sometime misdiagnosed as havingADHD or similar or die before diagnosis.Symptoms are: • Enlarged spleen • Enlargedliver • Learning difficulties and progressive intellectual decline • Seizures • Slurred, irregularspeech • Sudden loss of muscle tone which maylead to falls (Cataplexy) • Tremors • Unsteady gait • Clumsiness • Walking problems (Ataxia) Most of the symptoms are similar to Alzheimer’sand therefore has been dubbed by the press as“Baby Alzheimer’s”.
In 2010 the registered fundraising group “Pridein Lleyton Appeal” was set up to help raiseenough for Lleyton to take part in a treatmentof a trial drug called Cyclodextrine (should he
become eligible), known to slow down theprogression of this condition but not CURE.The national charity “Niemann Pick DiseaseGroup UK”, which provides information, researchand research for the condition, are currently tryingto bring the trials to the UK. In order to do so,they will need a lot of funding and support.
Every year, once targets have been achievedfor Lleyton, the excess is donated to NPDG UK.In 2011, the first full year of fundraising, justunder £5,000 was donated to them.
To learn more about NPD and Lleyton, and tosupport the group, you can find them atwww.prideinlleyton.co.uk and on Facebook.
Charity events have been organised for 2013 at Swinton Park Golf Club:- Sun 10th March, 4.15pm - Sponsored Fire WalkFri 25th October, 7pm - Charity Cabaret Night

Vintage is still hot!
Vintage inspired bouquets have been a top wedding trend over thelast couple of years and is still going strong. This dovetails nicelywith the larger overall love of vintage inspired wedding themes and details. Hugely popular, they combine gorgeous designand décor ideas to achieve that perfect big day look.
Antique styled bouquets in a palette of muted colours, can complement any bridal gown or style.
Local florist, Roses’n’Posies, specialise in Weddings and are designing many Vintage bouquets and arrangementsthis year.
Owner Michelle told us, “Vintage and country style table arrangementsand wedding flowers are a popular choice in 2013, featuring flowerssuch as roses, peonies, freesias, veronica and hydrangeas in colourssuch as peach, pale pink, cream, beige and minks, decorated withpearls. These give a spring/summer romantic feel to your weddingand can sit well in any setting. This style can be extended to buttonholes for the men, flower girls and bridesmaids as well as theblushing bride. We have been here once before as Cardwell and SonEstate Agents and opened in Swinton in 1982.Since then many things have changed, we didn'teven have the internet mobile phones back then.Imagine that! A very successful estate agent whoactually SOLD property by hard work, personalservice and a can-do proactive approach. Well thatwas us then and it is still us now but with the addedbenefit of full technology at our disposal.
During the last 33 years we have been very busy andnow have long established offices in Bolton, Buryand Whitefield with over 300 properties for sale aswell as having a large portfolio of rental propertiesand a substantial property management business. Now we feel the time is right to expand again andthe opportunity to open in superb offices with a carpark in Worsley village (behind the Milan restaurant)has arisen - and we have jumped at this opportunity.
We know there are other well known estate agentsnearby and we wish them well, however we knowthat you have a choice and we hope that you willconsider what we can offer you.In simple terms we are going to carry on doing exactlyas we are already doing at our other branches. We will utilise modern technology in order to promoteyour property to the highest standard. Our professional staff will provide you with a personalservice that is second to none, with total reliability, feedback and expertise. Combine that with VALUEand hey that's Cardwells.
Naturally we want to create a full property list assoon as possible so all of the above comes with anadded incentive to use our services. Sell your propertythrough us and we will pay your legal fees for selling, yes in full, even the VAT. We will give you a choiceof solicitors and that is it. No sale No fee No charge.
A qualified established estate agency, very keenand ready to succeed for you our client actively seeks clients who wish to sell or rent their property.
A great deal with a very competitive fee and, ofcourse, a SALE!

Keeping Business Local ...in Boothstown & Ellenbrook
As we continue to support shopping locally, thisissue we focus on Boothstown and Ellenbrook.
BOOTHST OWN...Historically know as “Booth Town”, is a formermining and cotton mill trade community. These days Boothstown is known for its canal-sidesetting and the Bridgewater Marina, both over-looked by The Moorings pub - a great place torelax and watch the boats slowly chug by.
In the village centre there is a wide offering ofservices available including the essentials suchas a post office, chemist, dry cleaners, hairdressers,a bakery and selection of pubs and takeaways.Plus health and domestic services - Iron It OutIroning Services, Sunny Days Nursery andLeigh Road Physiotherapy. On the retail side, there are stores ranging from Fashion to Hardware.
One of the longest standing businesses isShuffs Separates, a ladies boutique with theperfect ladies and occasion-wear for all ages -a popular place for Wedding outfits. Then forthe younger generation, Shuffs Kidz, a familyrun children’s boutique with up-to-date designersand baby gifts, ideal for special occasions.
Over in the Standfield Centre, recent additionsinclude A&C Hardware, stocking supplies forall your DIY jobs and giftware. The newest shophowever is Bexters Coffee Co, an independentcoffee shop offering a delicious range of hotdrinks and food. They are a great advocate oftrading locally, using local tradesmen to fit theshop, all North West food and drink suppliersand honey from a lady who lives in Ellenbrook!
Also at the Standfield Centre you will find thelong established Shabna Indian Restaurant,Prais Opticians and Dry Clean Express who
provide Wedding Dress Services and alterationswith their 20 year experience.
A new exciting addition for 2013 will be aSainsbury Local convenience shop. A Sainsbury’sspokesman advised, “It is due to open to thepublic on Wednesday 10th April 2013 and willtrade from 7am to 11pm”.

ELLENBROOK...Also situated by water, in this case the “EllenBrook”, was historically a mining village withextensive sidings for the local collieries, wherethe railway ran from Eccles to Wigan in the 1800’s.
Today, Ellenbrook has a modern, clean, freshfeel. In the village itself you have the essentialssuch as Co-op Food, a chemist, take-awaysWok To Go and Italian Express, plus Urban Escape H&B. Dotted around the area are a four pubs, hairdressers and La Bonita Beauty.
Ellenbrook is a vibrant village and a good areafor new businesses. In March 2012, personaltraining business MU Fitness set up and within12 months of opening they are set to fill theirmembership quota. They also run highly successful Weight-loss programmes.
So even in the quieter areas, you will find a host of shops and services, with new developments taking place. Both villages havethe added bonus of FREE parking! So a great opportunity to support your local community!Written by Louise Adkin

The Earls of Ellesmere - Part 3
THE NEW HALL REBORN?When the last stone of Worsley New Hall was removed to complete its demolition in 1947, 102 years of aristocratic grandeur came to anend. Memories of Worsley’s departed gentrybegan to fade as vegetation spread over therazed remains of their famous mansion, whichhad hosted Royalty and Prime Ministers.
Beneath the ground level, unseen and unsuspected, lay the cellars awaiting re-discovery and elsewhereenigmatic remnants - the Kitchen Garden, aGrotto on a lake island, the Ice House… Rampantgrowth, of dense birch and rhododendronwoodland, swiftly swamped the famed formal“parterre” gardens and silt flowed into the lake, halving its extent. The once-majestic terraces, their retaining walls removed. collapsed into aslope. Ten years of growth, disturbed only by thebuilding of a Cold War Civil Defence bunker, soonabandoned, created what appeared to be adense and ancient woodland, enjoyed only bycamping Boy Scouts and abundant birdlife...
...until the present day, as now the glories of the19th century may soon be reborn. The presentowners of Middlewood, plan to redevelop not onlythe site of the New Hall, but also part of GrangeFarm (the last operating major farm in Salford)across the Canal. The “footprint” of the vanishedHall will be utilised as the basis of a five-star 200bedroom Hotel & Spa.
Last year, a national competition was held andarchitects invited to design the new hotel. Theaim was to avoid duplication of the previousTudor-style of the Old Hall and encourage a fusion which would respect the classical statelyhome style, be in sympathy with the rural setting, yet possess the best of modern facilities.Grandeur was the guiding principal, taking advantage of the elevated site and landscaping.A pre-requisite for all entries to the Competitionwas that the original terraces would be restored, the “Parterre” formal gardens recreated and thefountains flow again. In place of the degradedscrub birch wood the original vista of “six counties”would return, sweeping down to a lake returnedto its original size.
The recent archaeological “dig” on the site, supervised by Salford University, found the New Hall cellars largely intact, which could beincorporated into the new Hotel as a heritagelink. Similarly, the Bunker may find a new leaseof life as a Conference Centre. Finally, a golfcourse, for which Planning Permission has beengranted by Salford Council, will be established, partially on the north bank of the Canal, butmainly flanking the Canal’s south bank onGrange Farm. Intended to be of internationalTournament quality, the Developer hopes thecourse will attract major events to Worsley.
In October 2012, the competition, overseen bythe Royal Institute of British Architects, was wonby Allies and Morrison, whose winning designcan be seen below.
The proposed development has favourable aspects, not least the creation of local employment andthe regeneration of a small “brownfield” part ofan otherwise beautiful natural area - Middlewood.
However, concerns exist for the environmentalprotection of existing old woodland habitat forwoodpeckers, bullfinches and other endangeredbirds that exist in Middlewood. Also, GrangeFarm is a vital area for rare birdlife and the monoculture of grass associated with golf fairwaysis unfavourable for birds and other creatures. Some 87 species of birds, amphibians such as theGreat Crested Newt, and the endangered watervole exist here. They all enjoy status as ProtectedSpecies and the land itself is designated Green Belt. This land, part of Chat Moss, is now Salford's onlyremaining window on open countryside andshould be protected as a vital asset for futuregenerations to enjoy.
