1- Definition and Description.

The system consists from four sides structural glazing curtain wall with mullion and

transom width of 52 mm with overall depth of (145,120 mm) which can

accommodate design loads with inner supporting frame work and outer pre-glazed

panels.

Also, it can be used with horizontal cover caps or with vertical cover caps.

2- System Components:

2.1. The overall frame Work:

Sections are made of aluminum alloy extruded profiles. The mullions profiles to be

either free standing supported to the floor and the upper slab or to be continues and

supported to the building slabs using a special deigned aluminum or steel brackets to

transfer the loads from the framework to the building structural elements. The

transoms' depth is to be the same mullion depth or smaller and to be assembled to

the mullions using aluminum connection and stainless steel fixation screws. All the

transoms should be of overlap type to enhance the system performance towards air

infiltration and water penetration.

2.1.1. Three different loads to be taken into considerations during structural

calculations preparation (dead loads, wind loads and thermal actions).

2.2 Glazing manufacturing.

Two ways of manufacturing insulated glaze are used:

1st: by using double glazing material "polysulphide".

2nd: by using outer panels sections.

2.2.1. 1st using double glazing material "polysulphide"

A18 mm air gap "spacer" is used between a two 6 mm panes. The glaze unit is then

sealed on the edge by using polysulphide to prevent humid outside air from entering

the unit. Polysulphide provides an adhesive with greater tightness and it has

excellent resistance to fuels, ozone, salt water and sunlight. Glaze unit fixation to the

frame work will be by inserting the aluminum profile "clip holder" into the

polysulphide while manufacturing to be hold by another aluminum profile

"restraining clip holder" into the inner frame work.

2.2.2. 2nd using outer panels' sections.

The pre-assembled, pre-glazed outer panels to be made of aluminum extruded

profiles and an insulating or single glass layer. The panels should be fixed to the inner

frame work using multi-point fixation supports with a calculated quantity according

to various design loads. The joints between outer panels were designed to be 18 mm

width a 12 mm air gap “spacer” is used to be inserted in.

For the two mentioned methods, the projects consultant can choose between 2

types of joints:

Dry glazing joint using EPDM rubber gasket.

Wet sealing joint using approved weather seal silicone.

The type of panels, either to be vision panels to see through or to be spandrel panels

in front of slabs and up-stands.

2.3.1. Glazing Properties:

The glazing shall be of top quality, float tinted or reflective type and without any

manufacturing defects according to Egyptian standard ES353 & ES354, according to

the following characteristics:

Glaze thickness: as shown in project specs.

Glaze color: as described in project specs.

U Value (ISO) of (varies per glass type) W/m2.K

Solar energy reflection: as required……..%

Solar energy transmission: as required……%

Daylight reflection: as required……. %

Daylight transmission: as required……..%

2.3.2 Insulated glass vision panel (IG units):

Consists of 2 panes of glaze determined by project's specifications with intermediate

air gap of 18 mm.

IG units need not to use the same type of glaze. Tempered and annealed glaze can

be used at the same units. If one of the panes is reflective or tinted glaze, it must

face the exterior.

If reflective glaze the mirror face to be towards interior. It may be necessary to

temper one of the panes to protect against thermal breaking.

The benefits of having GL units can be summarized as follows:

Heat loss for double glazing will be double in single glazing.

Draughts through vision panels caused by sinking cooled will be less.

Reduce the outside noise.

Reduce the condensation for the internal glaze pane.

Increases the re-sale value of the property.

Saving on energy bills.

2.3.3. Spandrel glaze panels (SG units):

Spandrel glaze is not specially a type of glaze, but it refers to the use of obscure glaze

in non-vision areas of a building.

One of these areas is the spandrel of a building. The spandrel is the part of a building

between the head of one window and the sill of the window above it. For aesthetic

reason, this area is often covered with glaze.

Several methods can be used to make spandrel glaze. One of them is using a colored

ceramic paint called a "Frit" to one surface of the glaze. In this case the glaze must

be either tempered or heat strengthened because the frit causes the glaze to absorb

heat. If reflective glaze is used s a spandrel application, the back surface must be

obscured visible under certain light conditions. Also, in this case we have to use an

insulating material between glaze and building face. Usually, we can use rock wool

insulation with certain thickness ad density can be specified by project specifications.

2.3.4. Operable panels:

In case of operable panels existence. The panels should be of the top hung projected

out type with a stainless steel balancing arms and a special handle mechanism with

transmission angles to allow multi-locking points.

2.4. Glass Bonding:

The glass pane must be fixed to the pre-assembled panel frame using 3M-VHB tape.

The innovative 3M-VHB tape is two-sided pressure sensitive adhesive acrylic foam

tape designed to bond glass to metal frames in glass curtain walling systems. Each

application will be reviewed on project specific bases. Application guidelines will be

based upon adhesion test results generated by 3M technical service. These project

specific application guidelines must be followed during the glass bonding process.

2.4.1. The distinctive advantages of using 3M-VHB tape are:

Reliability Granted:

20 Years warranty for qualifying applications.

Bonds with excellent dynamic strength to replace wet glazing.

Resistance for environmental conditions such as UV, moisture, heat and cold.

Viscoelasticity absorbs shock and allows movements for reliability against

wind, vibrations and thermal expansion or contraction.

Simplified application to save time and materials.

Speed assembly and delivery.

Bonds on contact with no drying, fixturing and liquid mess.

Saving the time, labor and material of spacer tape, gasketing, masking and

clean-up.

Eliminates the time and testing of 2-parts systems for glaze/butterfly, snap

time and mix ratio.

Eye appeal from a distance and even up close from both inside and outside.

Clean edge lines.

Tape bonds, seals and conforms to a variety of surfaces.

Color remains constant from one end to the other.

No color change as seen between structural silicone and spacer tape or

gasket.

2.4.2. 3M-VHB-Tape Design guidelines.

For tape area calculations the following guidelines can be used.

Dynamic Loads.

For dynamic tensile or sheer loads (such as wind-loads), a design strength of 12

psi (85kPa) is used for 3M-VHB Structural Glazing Tape. This design strength

provides a safety factor of at least 5 and was established based on material

property testing as well as ASTM dynamic load testing for curtain wall

applications.

Static Loads.

For static tensile or sheer loads (such as dead weight loads, snow loads and other

long-term loads), a design strength of 0.25 psi (1.7kPa) is used for 3M-VHB

Structural Glazing Tape. This means 4 square inches of 3M-VHB Structural Glazing

Page 7: OMSI Facade Technical Info

Tape per one pound of load should be used to support static loads. These

guidelines provide a safety factor of at least 5.
