We started a new sermon series on Sunday, September 29, called “Sacred Worth.” During this series, we are re-affirming our identity as a reconciling congregation that is committed to being in ministry with persons of all sexual orientations and gender identities. This series affirms that all are made in the image of God. The final Sunday, October 13, we welcome guest preacher Rev. Elizabeth Evans who will bring us a message about our sacred worth in connection with National Coming Out Day celebrated on October 11. In addition, that afternoon at 4:00 pm, we are hosting a worship gathering in collaboration with several Wichita area churches focused around National Coming Out Day, acknowledging coming out as both a space of celebration and a space of lament. Rev. Elizabeth Evans will again be our guest preacher. We’ll follow that with a party in the fellowship hall…cupcakes, tie-dye t-shirts, rock painting, GLSEN, and Camp Sunflower!

Caring Cards Each Sunday our Prayer List is printed in your bulletin, as well as hanging on two of our bulletin boards. The Prayer List includes those in the hospital, rehab, hospice, military personnel, and those with current and continuing health concerns. Each Sunday morning we will prepare a greeting card for 2-3 on our list. Cards will be set up in the Parlor before the 9:00 service and during Meet & Greet, then moved to the prayer table in Fellowship Hall. Please take time to sign the card or write an encouraging message. Cards will then be hand delivered or mailed on Monday.

J o i n t h e CHUM Way Forward Team for a Listening Session on Sunday, October 20. We will gather for a potluck dinner at 5:00 pm. Presentation and discussion will begin at 5:45 pm and conclude by 7:00 pm. The CHUM Way Forward Team will share information about recent Acts of Resistance regarding Apportionments and Marriage Equality. In addition, information will be shared about legislation that will be considered at General Conference 2020 regarding the options for the future of the denomination.

Serve on a Church Committee Do you know someone with gifts for leadership in the church? We’re currently seeking applicants and nominations to serve on our various leadership teams next year. We are looking for leaders who take their commitment seriously to show up and be part of the work and leaders who can serve CHUM with joy. After you express your interest or share with us the name of someone who you think would do a great job, the Committee on Nominations and Lay Leadership (Nominations Team) prayerfully considers the needs of each team, their role in the church, and who might be the best fit for this year. The Nominations Team then personally invites individuals to accept an invitation to serve. Following their acceptance of the nomination, that slate is voted upon for election at our annual Church Conference meeting in November. Terms may be for 1-3 years and begin January 1, 2020. Monday Evening Meditation Classes with Brad Smith This session the classes will be on Monday evenings from 6:30-7:30pm. These classes will be held on 2nd floor in room #201 (west end). The classes for this month will be held on October 7 and 21.

CHUM Ladies’ Book Club The next gathering of the book club will be on Sunday, October 13. Carri Siebenmark will host our group as we

discuss The Lager Queen of Minnesota: A Novel by J. Ryan Stradal. Come and tell us what you think! The Faith Sisters will be hosting Meet & Greet in the Parlor this day as well; if you can help, please have your contribution there by 10:00am. In the spirit of our selection, we'll meet up after our book discussion at Norton's Brewing Company, 125 N. St. Francis St. Prairie Fire Marathon

Just a reminder that this coming Sunday, October 13, the half marathon will begin at 7:30am. Beware if you

try to drive through Riverside Park...it will be closed. They will be running on Douglas but you should be able to drive across Douglas.

Warm Feet W a r m H e a r t s ! Socktober is a sock, glove

and chap stick drive during the month of October to support a local homeless shelter. Our CHUM kids wanted to partner with one of our CHUM families to support them in their annual sock drive and we are inviting all of CHUM in on the fun. If you would like to bring in a donation there is a box located in the hallway under the Socktober bulletin board.

AGAPE, Rm. 201 - Welcome back, Suzanne! In class we learned that Orthodoxy means "right belief" and that right belief was determined by whomever won the various theological debates, thus Rome defined the Christian Orthodoxy. Happy anniversary this week to the Petty's and they bring treats next week. Congratulations to Andrew Wiebe as he is getting married this week.

BUILDERS, Rm. 305 - We served treats in the Parlor for Meet and Greet. See you all back in class Sunday. Keep in your prayers: Charlie M., Nori, Mark McKee, and Bob & Mary Schmidt.

CHILDREN, Children’s Center - This past Sunday was Bible Presentation Sunday, there were a total of 15 bibles handed out this year! During the month of October, all children in grades 3-5 are encouraged to bring their Bibles to class as they learn the different books and how to use them. During the month of October, the children’s offering is going to support Socktober. The kids are joining the Vaughn’s family tradition of a sock drive every October to support a local homeless shelter. This year we invite all of CHUM to bring in socks, gloves and chapstick for this mission.

COMMUNICATORS, Rm. 301 - The Caywoods led class on the video Unshakeable Hope. Discussion will continue Sunday. Be sure to mark your calendars: October 14, Monday, 5:00 – 7:00pm Pumpkin carving for Botanica in our classroom (bring tools, stencils and ideas); November 5, Tuesday, 10:00am – 12:00pm class to volunteer at Food Bank on Douglas; November 13, Wednesday, serve CHUM Chew and Chat snack supper (more info to follow); and November 22 or 24 TBD - Star gazing, bonfire and cookout (more info to follow). CONTEMPORARY STUDIES, Rm. B5/7 - Sixteen together this cloudy Sunday, including Carole Shepherd's, Jazmine! Concerns for Myrne Roe and broken arm. Class continued discussion on United Methodist's Traditional Plan to go into effect January 1, 2020, and CHUM's handling with Way Forward Task Force. Tabletalk focused on questions asked by Mainstream UMC: how we resist harm of the Traditional Plan and restore our collective health, and what can we non-bishops do.

DOUBLE CIRCLE, Rm. B4 - Moe opened class with 11 present. Dr. Brake’s lesson was on Joshua 7. God is a Holy God. This story helps us understand our place in the world and God’s intention for us. We have to be faithful! Good to have Nancy Brake back today! Continued prayers for Sheila Moody. Blessings and safe travels!

TRAVELING COMPANIONS, Bride’s Room B14 @ 11:15 am - Join us for discussion on spiritual development and personal growth.

VICEROY, Rm. B3 - We continued with chapter 2 of We Fed an Island by Jose Andres. We found some of the back story behind his effort to provide disaster relief to Puerto Rico. We discussed the questions, "What is the cost?" and "What can one person do?" We continue with chapters 3 and 4 on Sunday.

Children’s Ministries Welcomes All Children!

Children’s Sunday School for 3 year olds - 5th Graders will take place in the Children’s Center during the Sunday school time from 10:15 - 11:30am. Take children directly to their classroom and pick them up at 11:30am from their classroom. First Sunday of each month is Family Worship so all children will worship with their family and there is no Sunday school. CHUM Nursery is available for children 4 years and under each Sunday. It is located at the west end of building across from the elevator next to Fellowship Hall.

Global Mission Fellows Program Applications are being accepted now through January 7, 2020. This is a 2-year program for young adults, ages of 20 through 30, to engage with local communities outside their home context, connect the church in mission, and grow in personal and social holiness. If you are passionate about putting your faith into action while addressing the root causes of injustice you are encouraged to apply. Placement opportunities are within the U.S. and internationally. KWU Announces 50% Tuition Scholarship for UMC Church Members Kansas Wesleyan University has announced a 50% tuition scholarship available to all members of the United Methodist Church. “This scholarship provides an opportunity for students who have an affiliation with the Church to continue their faith journey at a Methodist institution.” KWU will require a grade point average of 3.0 and a letter from the church where membership is held in order to receive the scholarship. This will not affect a student’s eligibility for other scholarships, including “Dollars for Scholars” offered by the United Methodist Higher Education Foundation.
