Monthly Social Info
Veteran's Day (Nov. 11) honors all members of the Armed Forces
who served this country. They served and fought to protect us, to
keep our country safe, and to preserve freedom. Veterans risked
their lives for you and me. In some cases, they made the ultimate
sacrifice. We should honor and respect these heroes every day.
Tucked between the two monster sized holidays of Halloween and
Christmas, Thanksgiving (Nov. 23) receives far less attention. But
Thanksgiving is a very important holiday, especially with our busy
lifestyle. It is a time to kick back and relax, watch a football game
or go to a movie, and enjoy a huge feast. There is no nation in the
world that has more to be thankful for than us.
Also, in the month of November we celebrate: 14th World Diabetes
Day, 17th Homemade Bread Day, 23rd National Espresso Day,
24th Black Friday. The countdown to Christmas is 48 days
Much thanks to Ron & Val Molendyk who made October fun with
the Halloween Social at Benjie’s. Hope to see everyone at our
November social at The Black Bear Diner hosted by: Richard and
Carol Thompson.
Have a safe and fun filled month,
Janet

The Homecoming fundraiser has completed for 2017. Conda Takanabe reported that we did not have as many requests this year for homecomings. The overall earnings were down $1,000.00 from last year. We will still be doing homecomings, but they are no longer as big a money-maker for the club. This is partly due to schools banning automobile traffic on their new artificial track surfaces Conda asks that members try to keep the dates open between mid Sept and early Nov. when planning trips and vacations. Those who participated this year had fun helping all the Homecoming princesses feel beautiful on their special night. OCV members enjoyed the dinners before the games .

Remember, if you are planning a trip or single-day activities
for the club, be sure to email Leo Mann with the info so the
Board can stay informed about all events.

The October OCV Social was held on October
17 at Benjie’s Deli in Tustin. Ron and Val
Molendyk put together their annual Halloween
party. When guests arrived, they received some
wonderful goodie bags and tickets for door
prizes. After dinner, Ron and Val gave away
door prizes including bottles of wine, jars of
candy and more. These were won by Bob Van
Der Upwich, Janet Cherry, Richard Thompson,
and Sue Lookman, The grand prize was a free
meal at Benjie’s, which the restaurant donates
every year. Sue Walker was the big winner.
Members got into the spirit of the event by
wearing orange and black, and many sported
holiday themed shirts and accessories. There
were 45 members in attendance.
Thank you to Ron and Val for putting on this
special social every year. It has become an
annual tradition for the club and everyone who
attends enjoys it very much.

support of our annual poker run.

show are: Jerry Wheeler took first place in C4
modified. Dan Goodman won 2nd place in C5
modified, and Janet Cherry won first place in

Extended Registration for Route
66 Fun Run/Las Vegas Weekend To give the club an update from the Business
Meeting of Tuesday, November 7th, there are
now 33 people signed up to go on the Route 66
Fun Run trip in 2018. We have heard from
some people that they are still deciding so it
was decided to extend the registration deadline
until December 5, 2017, which is the next
Business Meeting before making final
arrangements. If you are one of these
undecided individuals or a new club member
who would like to join us please let Ron or
Michael Molendyk know.
Here’s the itinerary. On Thursday, May 3rd we
will head to Las Vegas, staying at the Tuscany
Suites and Casino. Thursday night we will go
see the Bee Gees tribute show “The Australian
Bee Gees” at the Excalibur Hotel and Casino.
Friday we will lunch at the Southwest Diner in
Boulder City and then take Highway 93 to
Kingman. Highway 93 is 2 hours of open road
experience in your Corvette. It’s a fantastic
drive. Saturday we will participate in the 31st
annual Route 66 Fun Run from Seligman to
Kingman. People from all over the world
participate in this fun event. Usually about 800
vehicles of all makes and models, old and new.
The Fun Run is not a race, but a 140 mile
pleasure cruise down historic Route 66 – the
Mother Road. In the afternoon we will
participate in the car show in downtown
Kingman, sit around the pool or take a nap. All
this along with some great food and socializing!
The second leg of the journey begins Sunday.
Departing Kingman to Oatman Ghost Town to
Topock/Golden Shores for the finish line of the
Fun Run and then lunch at the “Giggling
Cactus” in Needles, CA. After lunch we will
head for home.
Final information, itinerary and costs will be
given at the January 2018 business meeting.
Monies will be collected at the February 2018
business meeting so all reservations can be
locked in.
We hope those of you who have not signed up
yet will consider joining us on this fun trip. It’s a
great chance to socialize with your fellow club
members, see some historic places, eat some
great food and drive your Corvette on the open
road. So come get some “kicks” with us on
Route 66.
Hosted by Ron and Michael Molendyk. To sign
up or if you have questions regarding the trip
please call Ron Molendyk at 714.524.6723,
email at [email protected] or see us at the
November social or December business
meeting.
Did you know …
• Potatoes were not part of the first
Thanksgiving. Irish immigrants had not yet
brought them to North America.
• A ten-gallon hat will only hold ¾ of a gallon.
• Just like fingerprints, everyone has different
tongue prints.
Did you know?
• 1968 was the first year an AM/FM stereo radio
was offered as an option – Crank up that AM
radio!
• 1953 Corvettes were offered in any color you
wanted… as long as it was White with Red
interior
• 1983 model Corvettes were built. There were
so many quality problems with them it was
decided to halt production until they could be
corrected. By the time the problems were
corrected, it was too late and 1984! The only
1983 Corvette still known to exist is on display
in the National Corvette Museum!

Changes to Club Charity The charity that OCV has traditionally supported
(the Retinitis Pigmentosa Foundation) no longer
exists, so the club must decide which charity we
want to support going forward.
This need started conversation about which
charity to choose for future giving. If OCV
decides to continue giving to a charity for eye
diseases, there is a blindness group called
Foundation Fighting Blindness that has an
Orange County chapter. It supports research
that will provide preventions, treatments and
cures for people affected by retinitis
pigmentosa, age-related macular degeneration,
Usher syndrome and the entire spectrum of
retinal degenerative diseases.
Several members of the Board commented on
the fact that O C Vettes has lost numerous
active members over the last couple of years
due to various forms of cancer. It was
suggested that a donation to some organization
that supports cancer research or treatment
might be a worthwhile cause to make on behalf
of all these loved members who are no longer
with us. Other charities may also be possible
candidates for our contributions.
The discussion and decision needs to be made
by OCV membership. If you have a charity you
think would be appropriate to receive donations
from OCV, please contact a Board member and
OCV Birthdays and Anniversaries
give them the name of the charity and the
reason why you think it should be selected by
the club.
Once all ideas have been submitted, the Board
will discuss the choices by the end of the year
and narrow down the potential choices to the
top three. The membership will be called on to
vote for the new club charity at the January
2018 Business Meeting.
Palm Desert Trip 2018 The annual OCV Fun In The Sun weekend for
2018 is in the planning stages. The trip will be
held Apr 5-8, 2018. The group will stay at the
Inn at Deep Canyon. If you think you would like
to attend, you should call the Inn at (800) 253-
0004 to make your reservations. Be sure to say
you are with OCV. You can always cancel if you
find you are unable to attend.
This year, we may bring back some old favorite
activities such as dinner at Las Casuelas
restaurant followed by a visit to the Palm
Springs VillageFest, the Thurs night street fair.
This trip normally includes a drive or tour some-
where on Sat, as well as golf, shopping, spa
treatments, relaxing by the pool and lots of
great dining. If you have an idea for a Saturday
trip or if you want to help with planning, please
contact Carol Thompson, Nancy Ward or Jane
Wheeler to let them know. This is always a fun
event. Plan to come along.
