Q
NOVA “Cold Case JFK” What can science tell us about the Kennedy assassination — and the investigations that followed?Wednesday, November 13, at 9pm on KQED 9.
Beginning with John F. Kennedy’s childhood years as the sickly second son of one of the wealthiest men in America, the American Experience film JFK explores his early political career as a lackluster congressman, his successful run for the U.S. Senate and the game-changing presidential campaign that made him the youngest elected president in U.S. history. With the benefit of recently opened archives, the film also recounts his struggles with life-threatening illnesses and his efforts to keep them hidden from the public.
JFK offers new perspectives on his complicated private life, including his relationship with his wife, his close connection to his younger brother, Robert, and his complex bond with his powerful father. It also reevaluates Kennedy’s strengths and weaknesses in the Oval Office as he navigated some of the most explosive events of the 20th century: the disastrous failure at the Bay of Pigs, the urgent demands of an increasingly impatient civil rights movement, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the escalating conflict in Southeast Asia.
Three nights (November 11–13) of new programs examine the life and career of the complex, enigmatic man forever enshrined in myth by an assassin’s bullet 50 years ago.
Remembering Kennedy
The Kennedy Half-CenturyBased on Larry Sabato’s new book, this new program chronicles the impact and influence of John F. Kennedy’s life, administration and tragic death on the public, the media and every subsequent U.S. president.Monday, November 11, at 11pm on KQED 9.
Cuban Missile Crisis: Three Men Go to WarGet the inside story of the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962, when the world teetered on the brink of nuclear holocaust.Tuesday, November 12, at 11pm on KQED 9.
Secrets of the Dead “JFK: One P.M. Central Standard” A minute-by-minute chronicle of the assassination as it was revealed in the CBS newsroom — from the moment the president was shot until Walter Cronkite’s emotional pronouncement of his death, one hour and eight minutes later.Wednesday, November 13, at 10pm on KQED 9.

Indeed, the space of today is opening up to commercial ventures like never before. “One of the most rewarding aspects of this documentary was spending time with executives and engineers at these new space startups and witnessing the passion and intelligence they bring to their amazing endeavors,” says Sheraz Sadiq, KQED Science television producer. “Many of them are in their 20s and 30s, much like the phenomenal team of young NASA engineers who were essential to the historic success of the Apollo program.”
Silicon Valley Goes to Space airs Wednesday, November 20, at 7:30pm on KQED 9.

Discover how the big, bold ideas of Silicon Valley are helping launch a new era of private space exploration in KQED Science’s first half-hour special. From space tourism to mining the moon to companies building rocket ships for ferrying NASA astronauts into space, a new wave of commercialization is shaking up the $300-billion global space industry. But are there new risks when space is no longer the exclusive domain of big governments? In May 2012, SpaceX became the first company to embark on a successful commercial mission to the International Space Station, ferrying more than a 1,000 pounds of supplies to the station. The founder and CEO of SpaceX, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, wants to begin flying private citizens to Mars aboard SpaceX rockets in 10 or 15 years. Virgin Galactic, founded by billionaire British entrepreneur Richard Branson, is on track to launch into commercial service in 2014, rocketing “space tourists” on a $250,000 ride to the edge of space and back.

A star-studded lineup of the nation’s top comedic entertainers will salute Carol Burnett at the 16th annual Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Upon learning she’d receive the prize, Burnett remarked, “I can’t believe I’m getting a humor prize from the Kennedy Center. It’s almost impossible to be funnier than the people in Washington.”
This year’s Mark Twain Prize special airs Sunday, November 24, at 8pm on KQED 9.

The California Report, and other KQED media and education services. “On behalf of the millions of Bay Area residents who depend on KQED services every week, we thank Wendy and Eric Schmidt for their generosity and leadership,” says KQED President John Boland. “Silicon Valley is home to KQED’s largest audience, and this historic gift from two of the valley’s most prominent leaders is an inspiration to everyone.” As other regional news organizations have reduced coverage, KQED has been able to expand its reporting on the issues and events that are important to the people of the Bay Area, thanks to members and supporters like the Schmidt family. We look forward to continuing to provide you with the news and information you need to actively engage in civic life.
Eric and Wendy Schmidt want to ensure that everyone in the Bay Area has access to intelligent, unbiased news and information, no matter what their economic status. Their recent gift of $1.5 million — the largest annual individual gift in KQED history — will help do just that. “Eric and I are longtime KQED supporters and devoted listeners,” says Wendy Schmidt. “At a time when informative national and local reporting is even more critical for Bay Area residents, we are excited to support the work done by KQED and its staff and help ensure that it can continue its mission to inform, educate and entertain listeners.” The Schmidts’ gift will support KQED Public Radio, KQED’s award-winning statewide news service
