NOTRE DAME CHURCH HOUSTON, TEXAS MARCH 20, 2016
From the Deacon With the blessing of palms, we enter into the holiest of
weeks in our liturgical calendar. We are once again
invited to meditate on the suffering and death of Jesus
who gave himself for our sake. Each of the Gospel
passion narratives is unique. Each of the evangelists
wanted to portray a particular theology. Their focus
was the result of years of reflection on the implications
of Jesus’ death and resurrection.
As Catholics, perhaps we more often tend to focus on
the physical pain and suffering of Jesus. Especially
when we pray the stations of the cross, we can almost
envision the pain and the cruelty of the crucifixion. The
evangelists however, want us to focus more on the
mental stress and pain that Jesus endured during his
hours of passion and death. St. Paul would often write
in his letters that a true Christian was one who was
committed to dying and rising again with Jesus. Few of
the early Christians ever died in the same manner as
Jesus did.
The dying that we are called to do as Christians implies
a more interior death from within. Looking closely at
the passion narratives, we see Jesus who had to endure
the mental stress and pain of his own dying. Even as his
disciples continued to misunderstand him, many
deserted him, and one even swore that he did not know
him. Jesus, however, continued to give himself for
them. There was nothing to stop Jesus from
demonstrating his love for others even when they
rejected it.
If in fact we are called to die with Jesus, then perhaps
that is the kind of dying that we can imitate. As
Christians, our lives can reflect the same values and
determination to live out God’s will for us just as our
Savior did while he lived. In the face of rejection and
sometimes ridicule for our stand with those who are
oppressed or neglected, we can be the voice of those who
have no voice. We may not always be understood or
appreciated for our efforts. but like Christ, we will die
to self in order that others may live.
This holy week begins with the focus on the passion
narratives but we know that reflecting on the passion
and death of Christ is not the end. Jesus’ death will lead
to his resurrection and the conquering of death once
and for all. Our own dying to self can accomplish the
same results. When we are willing to die to our own
selfishness and self-concern, we can rise also to a new
way of living. Our new way of life will be focused on
others and their needs. Then we will truly be following
more closely in the footsteps of Jesus.
In Christ,
Deacon Frank

PASSION SUNDAY (PALM SUNDAY) ____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Entonces
nosotros verdaderamente estaremos siguiendo más de cerca
en los pasos de Jesús.
En Cristo,
Diácono Frank
