    SUMMARY

Kotak Education Foundation (KEF), is an organization working in the various

fields like Spoken English Program (SEP),Health and Hygiene, ParentIntervention Program (PIP), Scholarship and Mentoring, School Teacher

Enhancement Program (STEP), Principals Enhancement Program and KotakUnnati.I worked on Spoken English Program (SEP) where focus was ondeveloping Spoken English ability for vernacular medium students with Kotak

Education Foundation under the guidance of my Faculty Guide Mrs. RoopamGosain and NGO Guide Mrs Yasmin Sha and Mrs Leena More for a periodof three month from 3

    rdOctober 2012 to 20

    thDecember 2012.

The objective of the Spoken English Program (SEP) is to improve the

communication skills of the students studying in vernacular schools. The SEPprogram helps to make the students comfortable with reading and

communicating in English thereby, enhancing their personality and improvingtheir confidence. My objective was to help the students in every way possible tomake them comfortable with English by using various kinds of teaching

methods like teaching aids, mind-maps, actions, games, skits, role-plays andvarious other activities. As per the program, I followed the TLM as prescribedto us by KEF. On Wednesdays we took their reading lessons and on Thursdays

we took their group activity- skit, where the students enacted the entire lessonby playing various characters, making use of varied props prepared by us.

Besides teaching the other activities that I did were preparation of skits, songsand poems for the annual program of KEF which is RAYS. I prepared the

invitation cards and budget for the same. I also prepared patriotic songs andcharts for the coming Republic Day. There were Home Visits as well that were

done during the course of this project where we (my partner and I) made athorough study of their background and their financial health. The project

included DEL form i.e. Daily Evaluation form and Log Sheet which we have to

fill and send to our NGO guides, which was done so that we could improveourselves from our mistakes and our guides could keep track on our progress.

I thank Kotak Education Foundation and ITM Business School for providingme the opportunity to teach the students to speak in English which gave me a

feeling of self-satisfaction and self-contentment. I am indebted to both theinstitutions for making me a better individual today and also for helping me to

improve my managerial skills through this project

    ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN BY THE NGO

    1. Student Intervention Program (SIP)

The Student Intervention Program (SIP) focuses on teaching students attending

schools in low-income, disadvantage areas, Basic Interpersonal CommunicationSkills (BICS) in English. Most schools focus on the academic subjects andscores in the centralized exams. They rarely focus on the skills such as

communication, language, inter personal and work skills. SIP is an after School

Program that teaches and enables student to learn. Basic InterpersonalCommunication Skills (BICS) in English that will help college readiness,Employability, relationship, family and community. As we know in todaysworld learning English is really important and if those children want to come

out of the vicious circle they need to Educate themselves first. Kotak group hastaken a real wise step to help India grow, by educating the youth. And the step

taken by ITM, Navi Mumbai is really good, as involving aspiring managers tothis initiative will really help them to add to the skill sets to be possessed by amanager

Students presenting skit at Abhinava School.

    10. Work for RAYS:-We all ITM students in the Ideal School were asked to plan RAYS programme.RAYS Program is one hour annual day function. It is held in Ideal School every year. The annual day function is on 20thJanuary 2013. We planned the program in group. We decided the theme Health & Hygiene for this day.

We plan/make following things: - Budget

What all activities will be there Skit Poem Jingles

    Charts

    RESULTS

After teaching students for about two months following improvement/changes

    were seen in students: -

    1. Reading Speed: - Earlier students used to read very slowly with pause andbreaks but after the sessions change was seen in them. There reading

speed increased and know they were speaking with very little pause.TLM was very helpful in increasing their speed as they have to speak

    again and again.

    2. Fluency: - They became more fluent. There were some students who wereable to read but their fluency was week. They used to read the full

sentence correctly but they took lot of time. They used to read one by oneword. TLM helped in making them fluent.

    3. Pronunciation: - By reading again and again, know they are able topronounce words correctly

    4. Build Confidence: - I saw a tremendous change in the students. The firstday when I interacted with them in English, very few of them responded

to my questions correctly. Most of them didnt understand what I wasasking. They were nervous because they did not understand the language.

But after these sessions they are able to understand and speak English. They do respond to my questions correctly. Improved communicationskills raised their confidence level. Know students answer confidently

    5. Overall Development: - The program was aimed not just to spokenEnglish but also to the overall development of the student. The sessions

which I took, skits which student performed, movie session,

question/answer round during teaching hours and interaction withstudents has really helped students in enhancing their personality.

    RECOMMENDATIONS

Learning English will become easy and interesting for the studentsthrough the factor FUN and various activities.

It should be action based teaching as teaching them lessons throughactions make it easier for them to understand the actual meaning of wordor sentence.

There should be some sessions were students have to speak in English infront of class which will improve their speaking skills and also their fear

of public speaking will move away.

Regular role play and skit should be conducted as the students there loveto do the acts, and they willingly prepare for it. The most important thing to teach them is all about cleanliness and

hygiene as their school and the place where they live is not clean, they

need to learn how to keep surrounding clean.

The number of teaching staff should be increased so that Kotak can giveindividual attention to students.

Grammar classes should also be arranged as there is no basic knowledgeabout English and the students should understand rather than mug up the

    lesson.

Students should be allowed to take text books home I they want only thenthere will be more improvement if they have study material at home aswell.

    LEARNINGS ACCUMULATED

Planning & Organizing: - I enhanced my planning and organizing skills. Iwith my colleagues planned Rays Program. We planned the activities and

how the program will be conducted. Time Management: - I learned how to divide time for various activities.

How to prioritize things based on its importance. Patience: - There was certain time when it was very difficult for me to be

patient especially when after continuous lectures and hours spending onstudents to teach and they still committed the same mistake. But I

managed and always be patient with the students and repeat the lecture asmany times it was required.

I got to know difference between the learning and level of understandingof the students.

Leading: To work in a group leadership is the most important factor. I realized the importance of quality education in our life.

I find out the reasons why rural area students who have potential in themare not able to fulfill their dreams. Its because of financial problems, lack

of family support, Cultural norms, etc. I always thought that NGO will be a place where people will be laidback

but then I understood that its even more tougher than the corporate world. To fit everything in a stipulated budget is difficult and I learned hot to

    manage it.

More than sympathy those students needed our love.

    CONCLUSION

Overall during this one month project with Kotak Education Foundation,

found that high differences in the learning & comprehending level ofstudents in rural India. Need to identify the problems in schools in rural

India and need to address them at earliest. There is a need to providegood infrastructure facility to students a rural India and it is dutyand obligation for our society.

The most important problem obstructing the growth & expanding thelevel of knowledge of students from rural India is the shortage of good &

talented teachers. More self-help groups & charity groups, clubs shouldbe brought in to provide help to schools in rural India in terms of

    infrastructure & training of teachers.

The main aim for the programme is to provide the Basic Englishknowledge with the SEP. to enhance them with their English speaking

skills. Main focus was the reading and speaking English. We use to

prepare the portfolio of all the students under each of us as to analyze

their overall performance. During our teaching project we learned how to coordinate with others, to

have patience when some is not understanding or not getting and most

important to be planed for every event. Conventional methods of teaching have been replaced by Easy

    Learning Processes.
