Happy Easter everyone, we hope you have a nice break!
MFL STUDENTS WELCOME POET BASIR SULTAN KAZMI TO CLASS
Page 2
Our MFL students welcomed poet Basir Sultan Kazmi to school on Thursday. He showed
them how to write poetry using examples from Urdu and Persian poetry, especially the
popular verse form ghazals. They learnt how to write using couplets, rhythm and rhyme.
MFL Curriculum Area Leader Ms Baksh said they really enjoyed the class and it helped
them learn how to write poetry. It also helped them prepare for the ‘Mother Tongue
Other Tongue’ multilingual poetry competition, which we take part in every year. Most of
the students made a start on their poems, which they may be entering for the competition.
CONGRATULATIONS TO FORM 7LBU
Congratulations to Form 7LBU, who were awarded a party by Head of Year 7 Mr Boyle and Year 7 Pastoral Support Worker Ms Flowers. They received the least amount of lates, the most merits and the best attendance as a form for Year 7. Mr Boyle said he was very proud of them and they had worked very hard this term.
STUDENTS TAKE PART IN TEENS AND TODDLERS PROGRAM
Page 3
Our Year 10 students have been setting an example to toddlers at a nearby primary
school, by taking part in mentoring sessions as part of a Teens and Toddlers program.
Run by a company called Power 2, students have been completing the program one
morning a week over 16 modules.
As part of the program, our students are acting as a mentor and a role model to children
at the nursery at Divine Mercy RC Primary School. They have been engaging in group
work learning, which includes coaching to boost their confidence and aspirations. They
also have the opportunity to gain a national qualification in Interpersonal Skills.
The students mentor the same toddler each week and they are all enjoying building up a
relationship and showing them how they should behave in school.
Lana Ibrahim said she was really enjoying the program, and it was also helping her
understand her younger sibling better.
The Teens and Toddlers program has been organised in school by Pastoral Manager Ms
Artingstall. There is another cohort of Year 9 students who are taking part in the program,
who are mentoring toddlers from Claremont Primary School on Thursdays.

UKMT INTERMEDIATE MATHS CHALLENGE SUCCESS
Students in Year 9, 10 and 11 took part in this year’s UKMT Intermediate Mathematical Challenge, achieving fantastic success.
In total, 35 certificates were awarded to our students with 4 Gold, 16 Silver and 15 Bronze certificates. The UKMT organises national mathematics competitions and other mathematical enrichment activities for pupils aged 11-18.
40% of pupils are awarded certificates, with the top 6% receiving a gold certificate, the next 13% silver and the next 21% bronze nationally. This means that 35 students at Manchester Academy were in the top 40% of young mathematicians who participated in the challenges.
There were exceptional performances by Year 11 students Zalan Rehman, Mohamed Karama, Awab Alshami and Aicha Al Saty who achieved a gold certificate, and qualified for the European “Pink Kangaroo” Mathematical Challenge, which they completed on March 21st. Zalan Rehman’s performance was phenomenal as he was awarded the “Best in School” certificate for achieving the highest score.
There were also excellent performances by Adlan Anazim (Best in Year 10), El Mehdi Hussein (Year 10), Shamama Mohammed (Year 10), Habib Sharif (Best in Year 9) and Hadia Haved (Year 9) who were awarded the Silver Certificate.
Mr Nizeyimana, KS4 Maths Coordinator, said all students taking part showed brilliant determination in solving unfamiliar mathematical problems by applying mental, logical and analytical skills.
