Merry Christmas Elks Lodge #1616 Ho Ho Ho! The Christmas season is upon us again! I love getting them big ole presents

every year, all the cool lights, the pine needle ropes draped on the stuff, and the beautiful

tree in the lobby (that the prettiest girl in the world decorates). My favorite part of

Christmas has to be all the generosity of people during the holidays. People step up for

other people at Christmas time. As an Elk you do your part too. Just by paying your dues you are helping

support the efforts of our Christmas charities program. Together we help 130 families in need, our neighbors,

have a wonderful Christmas too. Everyone’s generosity throughout the year also makes it possible to continue

the amazing effort, year after year. All the fun stuff we did this spring, summer, and fall, raised a good portion

of the incredible amount of funds needed to achieve our goals. Continue to support the effort and be proud to

do your part in giving back. Charity is the crowning virtue of an Elk.

The Veterans dinner on the 12th was awesome!! The lounge was packed with proud Veterans and Elks. Thank

you Veterans, and thank you to all who showed up to support them too. They are our real heroes that laid it on

the line so we could be free. YES! This is what it’s all about!

The Christmas Kickoff party was over the top! The band almost rocked the lodge off the hill. The food was the

best I’ve ever had at the lodge, hands down! Hats off to all the kitchen staff and volunteers. That was incredi-

ble!!! One of the best times I’ve had. This event alone raised almost $3000 in support of the charitable activi-

ties of your lodge. Way to go everyone!

Please join us at the Memorial Service on December 4th to pay tribute to the Elks we’ve lost over the year. The

ceremony will take place downstairs in the meeting room at 1:00 pm.

Don’t forget the Hoop Shoot on Saturday the 10th. This free throw competition is designed to promote sports-

manship in America’s youth. Boys and girls ages 8-13 are invited to participate. Registration is at 9:30am at

Hendersonville Middle School Gym, the competition will begin at 10am.

We are also collecting the essays for the Americanism Essay Contest. The topic for this year’s essay is “Why

Is It Important To Vote?”. I’m excited to read some of the entries this year. The opinions of 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th

graders are very intriguing. I was impressed to see all the young people in America so involved with this elec-

tion. Even the ones that aren’t old enough to vote are very opinionated, and have their own views and passion

for the country. That is refreshing.

Keep in mind we will not have a meeting on the 20th of December. The regular meeting schedule will resume

on January 2nd. Our efforts will be focused on the Christmas Charity program. Check your hoof prints for dates

and times to get involved in our largest charitable contribution. I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas,

and I’ll see you at the lodge. Merry Christmas everyone!

Your ER, Shane Cook

ELKS LODGE CHRISTMAS CHARITIES

The Hendersonville Elks Lodge Christmas Charities Committee is seeking assistance

from fellow Elks, their families, and business sponsors for contributions to our Elks

Christmas Charities Program this year! Last year we spent over $12,000 helping needy families in Henderson County.

There are residents in Henderson County that do not have the blessings most of us are so privileged to have, and it’s possible they may reside right around the corner from you. Please take a moment to reflect on your good fortune. Christmas Charities is a local Elks program, supported solely by local Elks. This program has been providing food for 130 families during the holiday season each year. It is through your benevolence as an Elk that we can continue to provide such a valuable contribu-tion to our community. Please complete the “contribution” slip below at your earliest convenience and mail to our address below (or bring into the Lodge Office). Do you work for a company or local business that might also like to donate? Consider asking – it can’t hurt! Just know that whatever donation you make directly supports this program and helps a local family! Saturday, December 17 Set-up Tables & Boxes/Toy Separation 6:00 p.m. Map out deliveries 6:30 p.m. Friday, December 23 Food & Produce delivered to Lodge 9:00 a.m. Pack Boxes 6:30 p.m.

Saturday, December 24 Deliver to Deserving Families 8:00 a.m. Members pickup & deliver to families they called in – 7:30–9:00 a.m.

EVERYONE IS ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND AND HELP! A “sign-up” sheet will be posted on the bulletin board in the

hallway of the Lobby if you would like to volunteer.

Thanks for your support in our Elks Christmas Charities effort and remember–Elks Care, Elks Share!

Future Elks News!!

Hey kids– Christmas is here and it’s time to pay back! Time

to give as well as receive. Last year you all did a super job in

giving cheer and hope to the 130 families we fed last year.

This year we will add to those needs. We will include family

size toothpaste and toothbrushes to the boxes we deliver. We

need help decorating the bags they will go into and make

cards expressing goodwill, cheer and hope. Please come have

some milk and cookies and help us prepare this very blessed

event. We may even get a special visit from Santa again!

Bring a tube or toothpaste or some toothbrushes in case we

need extras. We will be making our creations on

Sunday, December 18th from 2-4pm

Wow, what a great Christmas Charities Kickoff Party we had. If

you weren’t able to make it, we had a blast. We raised a good

amount of money to help Christmas Charities. We have a lot to do

this month to get ready to deliver all of our boxes. December 19th,

we will be getting the nonperishable items, so anyone wanting to

help us unload these, that would be great. On the 23rd, we will be

getting the perishable products. We will need help with this and on

the 23rd we will be packing boxes. It is a good time for charitable

work, so come on up and lend a hand. We will start delivering on

Christmas Eve at 8 am. If you have any questions or want to help

let JJ Kilpatrick know and we will have a job for you!

VETERANS NEWS

On Thursday, December 8th, at 7:00 PM, Hendersonville and Asheville Elks will be

hosting our monthly bingo night for the veterans at the VA Medical Center in

Asheville. Along with a Christmas theme, a special menu of soup and sandwiches

along with desserts will be provided.

Several years ago, Chris and Shirley Drake started a program whereby each veteran in

attendance that evening receives a Christmas stocking containing a number of gold

dollars, as well as a small gift. This year the Asheville Elks will be donating a large

share of these gold dollars.

Volunteers are always needed. If you would like to join in and help with this activity,

which only lasts about an hour and a half, please plan to be at the Medical Center no

later than 6:45 PM. Please contact me at 828-489-7492; or [email protected]

for information.

VETERANS DAY DINNER CELEBRATION

On Saturday, November 12th, our Lodge celebrated Veterans Day by

hosting a dinner, whereby every veteran of Lodge #1616, as well as

their wife/husband/partner, were invited to receive an entrée of their

choice at My Brother’s Place at no charge. Over thirty of our members

participated.

In addition, twenty-one veterans from the Charles George Medical

Center in Asheville were our guests that evening. Thanks to all of you

who came out and gave them the welcome they so readily deserved.
