To say the Ace LB3860 isa large machine is a bit of anunderstatement. TheLB3860, which weighs in at275,000 lbs. (124,738 kg),can process more than 1,000tons (907 t) of material anhour, according to the manu-facturer. It can process rockup to 3-ft. (.9 m) in diameter. The first of its kind for this
market, this high perform-ance primary mobile jawcrusher is designed for quar-ries doing high productionand for contractors lookingto do high-volume work.John Patton of AceEquipment Sales, Willington, Conn., spearheaded the com-bination of the Telsmith Jaw and the Eurotrack mobile plantwith these users in mind.“In today’s competitive environment, quarry operators
and large contractors need high production with a largecrusher opening, ease of operation and minimal down-time.The Telsmith jaw’s time-tested use as a stationary primarycrusher along with Eurotrack’s experience building trackchassis gave us the ability to meet these needs in a stablemobile platform. Contractors need a crushing plant that theycan operate with other equipment that is available like a 992size loader or a 375 to 390 size excavator,” Patton said. “For quarry operators, this mobility gives them the ability
to crush shot rock at the quarry face and convey theprocessed material back to the secondary crushing operationwith an overland conveyor saving time, money, fuel, haultrucks and people.” The Telsmith J3858 jaw (38 by 60 in. [96.5 by 152 cm]
jaw opening) weighs in at 110,000 lbs. (49,895 kg), is extradeep and wide and is mounted to a Eurotrack X9-2 chassis. The jaw is directly driven by a Cummins QSX15 engine andfed by a 60 in. by 20 ft. (152 cm by 6 m) feeder with 10 ft.(3 m) grizzly-bars and empties onto a 65 in. (165 cm) widedischarge conveyor. The jaws hydraulic relief toggle featuresoverload relief as well as chamber clearing in the event of anunexpected shutdown — eliminating the risk, time andexpense of “digging out.”
Not Your Typical CrusherIn most quarries there is a single massive initial crusher
usually known as the primary crusher that makes the firstmechanical breaking of the rock. This means that once a sec-tion of rock has been blasted, the pieces of rock, typically 3-ft. in diameter and smaller, are loaded onto a haul truck andtaken to the primary crusher, which then breaks the rockdown into smaller pieces. In a large quarry that means thatthose haul trucks, which must be loaded by a piece of equip-ment, are expensive to own and consume massive amountsof fuel. The runs also become longer and longer as the quar-ry face moves farther from the stationary crushing operation. The idea behind the LB3860 is to move a conventional
stationary jaw crusher to the rocks that need to be crushedinstead of bringing the rocks to the crusher, according toPatton. Conveying rock is the more cost-effective form oftransportation and is nearly impossible with shot rock. Thecost of just one 60 ton (54 t) haul truck is well above a mil-lion dollars and an established quarry would typically needseveral trucks to maintain production. This machine is built to handle quarry work, not to be con-
fused with the far smaller machines that are used for onsiterecycling operations. Dependability and longevity are desir-able components of any equipment and the Telsmith J3858hydraulic jaw has been operating around the world since1998. Eurotrack did a complete finite element analysis of the

chassis with real world data from oper-ating 3858 crushers to ensure a trackand carriage capable of handling thestresses of long-term crushing. TheCummins QSX15 500 hp (373 kW)engine is complemented withKawasaki hydraulic VDP pumps, PTTech hydraulic clutch and a triplepower transmission (TPT) speciallydesigned for crawler crusher use. Thispackage is designed to work together toreduce fuel consumption to a mini-mum.
Go Big or Go HomeWhy build such a mammoth
machine?“Along with being an equipment
dealer and manufacturer, we operate asmall quarry. We recognize the need tocut operating costs to remain competi-tive and profitable. While talking toanother producer about the challengeswe face in the industry, he indicated hisdesire to find a crusher large enough tohandle his shot rock while beingmobile enough to work around hisquarry.” Patton said. “Being a Telsmithdealer, I was familiar with Telsmith’sJ3858 jaw and we had been talking toone of the owners of Eurotrack Inc.,who we have known for over 15 years, about putting larger crushers on trackchassis. It just fit into place. “The economics of a machine like
this makes all the sense in the world. When you look at the potential of elim-inating the operation of a cycle of threeor four haul trucks and simply using anoverland conveyor to handle the mate-rial, the Ace LB3860 starts paying foritself immediately. The cost of convey-ing material is dramatically anddemonstrably lower cost than usinghaul trucks. The key was to have a jawlarge enough to work in a quarry withan ability to easily feed it with existingequipment. With a 17 foot feed height, the option is there to use a loader or anexcavator. With the capability of pro-cessing over 1,000 tons per hour, thequarry is lacking nothing in productionlevels.”
Notable FeaturesThe Ace crusher has some features
that increase the desirability of themachine, according to Patton. “The jaw crusher is equipped with a
hydraulic toggle, which relieves pres-
sure on the crusher when it is facinguncrushable or unbreakable rock orpieces of steel. The toggle will alsoclear the chamber in the event of a shut-down. This feature alone is a benefit interms of safety, downtime and per-formance. The crushingplant is also equippedwith a remote control, which allows the entirecrushing and loadingoperation to be controlledby one individual seatedin the excavator or loader.Plant options include abreaker hammer, side dis-charge conveyor, a 5thwheel conveyor hookupto attach an 80 ft.hydraulic jump conveyor, and an electric-dieseldrive combination.
“The jaw that we have used [theTelsmith 3858] was designed original-ly as a stationary jaw which has beentime tested worldwide for 15 years andhas proven itself to be tremendouslyreliable. It is a deep jaw for more crush-ing area and a better nip angle. TheCummins QSX-15 engine is set up for
direct drive to the jaw instead of usinga hydraulic motor resulting in less lossof horsepower between the engine andthe crusher. It also allows the crusher tooperate at lower rpm’s resulting in lessfuel consumption. The track system is
set up with a two-speed drive withenough torque to climb a 22 degreegrade,” he said. “This, along with theplant’s balanced center of gravity, givesthe machine an incredible ability tomove about.”
Working TogetherTo make this machine, Patton com-
bined the expertise of two proven man-ufacturers in the industry: Telsmith Inc.and Eurotrack Inc. Telsmith Inc. of Mequon, Wisc., the
jaw manufacturer, has a 100-year histo-ry in the manufacturing of aggregateequipment. Eurotrack Inc. ofNorthampton, UK, which manufac-tured the power plant and track systemfor this machine, has 20 years of expe-rience as an OEM for various manu-facturers of portable tracked aggregateequipment. Ace Equipment, which is an affiliate
of Becker Construction, has been inbusiness for more than 40 years, tookthe technology from both Telsmith andEurotrack and combined them to buildthe Ace LB 3860. Ace is currentlyworking with Telsmith and Eurotrackto produce an entry-level size mobilejaw crusher, the DB3244, expected outin February 2013 featuring theTelsmith HydraJaw H3244 jaw and theEurotrack X7 chassis. For more information, call 860/429-

Group Criticizes ProposedEast-West Highway in MaineAUGUSTA, Maine (AP) A report by an
environmental group that examines 50 of thecountry’s best and worst transportation proj-ects calls the proposed east-west highwayacross Maine one of the worst. The Sierra Club said that the privately run,
four-lane toll highway cutting through theMaine woods would have negative impactson air and water quality and critical wildlifehabitat. It also said a freight rail line parallelto the proposed route could reduce vehiclemiles traveled and redirect public invest-ments toward passenger and commuter rail. “If there is a need to move more goods
across the state, it makes more sense to revi-talize the existing freight rail line,” said GlenBrand, Sierra Club’s Maine Chapter director. The 220-mi. (354 km) highway would pro-vide a direct highway route between Quebecand New Brunswick, Canada, via Maine. The report noted that similar highway pro-
posals have been studied and rejectednumerous times in the past. A financial fea-sibility study by the Maine TransportationDepartment awaits proposals showingwhere the east-west highway’s connectionsto existing highways would be, putting theproject in a holding pattern. The Legislature earlier this year appropri-
ated $300,000 for the feasibility study, butsaid the money must be paid back by thedeveloper if the highway gets the go-ahead. The report by the 1.4 million-member
Sierra Club opposes highways and bridgeprojects in several other states, citing impactssuch as pollution, sprawl, runoff and cost. However, it praised planned projects such ascommuter rail, bus and streetcar expansions, and bikeways. It also praised a bridge projectin Florida that will restore water flow to theEverglades. The program manager of the project,
Darryl Brown, said the Sierra Club’s reportwas not surprising. “Sierra Club came right out of the gate
opposing this project,” said Brown. Brown took issue with the report, saying
planners are trying to avoid having the high-way go near populated areas and disruptingpeople’s lives. He said the strictest interna-tional environmental standards would be fol-lowed in construction. Brown also said thatrailroads cannot meet the needs of all busi-nesses, and that railroads and the highwaycan work “hand in hand” in delivering goodsacross the state. “There’s room for both,” he said.
