Getting to the hotel by hotel shuttle

A shuttle of the hotel Timișoara can be ordered beforehand. The price for a ride is 15 euros, for all the travellers together. If you want to share a hotel shuttle, we can organise the groups landing in the same time. The shuttle can be paid at the hotel by card or RON in cash.

Getting to the hotel by taxi

Taxis are readily available outside the arrivals area. Most of the taxi companies agreed with the City Hall the same fees, but they are some independent taxis as well, with much more expensive fees. For choosing a taxi, please go to the official taxi stop in the airport and avoid the “pirate taxis”. In the taxi stop, the places for the taxi companies are marked with the companies’ names and their phones. Usually, they have apps as well. The taxi fees vary from 2,6 RON/Km (~0,55 EUR) to 3.4 RON/Km (~0,7 EUR) plus the start. The fees for rides outside of the city and during the night are higher ones. Normally, the taxi will start in the airport with higher fees and will stop at the entrance of the city for changing the fees. A taxi ride to the hotel should be between 36 and 50 RON (max 10 EUR), paid in cash in RON. Please consider withdrawing Romanian currency (Lei/RON) from the ATMs located in the airport.

BUSINESS HOURS

Banks and other businesses are usually open 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Some banks are also open on Saturday from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Shops are in general open seven days a week, and some of them are closed on Saturday and Sunday. Not far from the hotel (10-15 minutes’ walk), there is a shopping mall, open from 8 to 22. The Romanian currency is the Romanian leu (RO pronunciation: [lew], plural lei [lej] – bank code RON. 1 leu is subdivided into 100 bani (Romanian pronunciation: [banʲ], singular: ban [ban]), a word that is also used for "money" in the Romanian language. Banknotes: 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500 lei. Coins: 1, 5, 10, 50 bani. There are ATMs located in Timișoara airport, so on arrival you can withdraw lei. Also, foreign currencies may be exchanged at banks or authorized exchange offices (called: "casa de schimb" or "birou de schimb valutar").

ANNEX: WELCOME TO ROMANIA!

TIMIȘOARA – EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2021

The first record of the city of Timișoara, built on the site of an ancient Roman fortress called Castrum Regium Themes, dates back to 1212. Over the years, Timișoara, the largest city in western Romania, has been influenced by many cultures. The Romans used it as an important crossroads fortress until the Tatars destroyed it in the 13th century. Conquered by Turkish armies in 1552, Timișoara remained under their protection until 1718 when the region of Banat came under Austrian rule for two centuries. Timișoara later became a vital commercial and manufacturing town. Turks, Austrians, Germans and Serbs all left their mark and their influence can be seen in neighbourhoods throughout the city even today. The city is multicultural and multiconfessional, a fantastic example of multiculturality. Many communities are studying in their mother tongue until the end of their high school, in state financed schools. Timișoara abounds with churches of several denominations, a Jewish quarter, an elegant baroque square and a pedestrian-only downtown area. Some of the monuments in the heart of the city afford panoramic views, while the many parks in this "city of flowers" provide an idyllic spot to take a break from sightseeing. The charm of this city, settled on the northern bank of the Bega River, lies in its distinct architectural character and vibrant cultural life. Frequently referred to as "Little Vienna," Timișoara is home to year-round musical and theatrical performances, art galleries, museums and a buzzing nightlife. A progressive, cosmopolitan place, Timișoara was the first city in Europe and second in the world after New York, to use electricity to illuminate its public streets in 1889. Also, Timișoara was the first European city to introduce horse-drawn trams, in 1869.

Timișoara is the city where the Romanian Revolution started in 1989, and the spirit of Timișoara is living.

PERSONALITIES FROM TIMIȘOARA

Two Nobel prices were won by personalities who studied in Timișoara: Stefan Hell, a Marie Curie alumnus who was born not far from Timișoara, winner of the Nobel prize for chemistry, and Herta Muller, winner of the Nobel prize for literature. Johnny Weissmuller, Hollywood's original Tarzan, was born in Timișoara. Francesco Illy, born here as well, invented the first automatic coffee machine, the predecessor of today's espresso machine.

TRADITIONS In general, people living in the countryside, and not only, are keeping their traditions, different in each region. You will probably land in Romania on the 24th of June, when we celebrate the traditional day and night of Sânziene, when we celebrate also the name of Ioan and Ioana. Under the popular belief, Sanzienele were considered to be some beautiful women living in the woods or fields unexplored by man. According to the tradition, Sânzienele float in the air or walk on the ground on the night of June 23 to June 24, dancing and singing. Also, the skies open on this magical night and miracles can happen. They say that who is seeing them dancing, will lose his mind. The basis of this ritual is the cult of saint Diana – Sânziana.

The name of Sânziene is given to Yellow bedstraw flowers as well. You will see people with Sânziene on the street, and they are special rituals related to this celebration. The folk practices of Sânziene imply that the most beautiful maidens in the village dress in white and spend all day searching for and picking flowers, of which one MUST be Galium verum (Lady's bedstraw or Yellow bedstraw) which in Romanian is also named Sânziànă. A new celebration is the international day of the Romanian blouse (RO “ie”, pl “ii”), which we were from our childhood, an which was painted by French impressionist painter Matisse and other painters and copied by many fashion houses. You may have the opportunity to buy original ones, handmade, different according to the region.

Lugoj - Densus - Colti

Where: 37 - 100 miles east of Timișoara; access: car Visit the old town centre in Lugoj with its 18th century Orthodox Church of the Assumption, one of the most representative baroque buildings in Banat. Next, cross the Carpathians into Transylvania and stop by at Densus, where you can find one of the oldest Romanian churches. This stone monument was built in the 13th century, and some historians assume it is a re-shaped Roman mausoleum. Build from river rocks, bricks with Roman inscriptions and funerary stones, the Saint Nicholas Church at Densus makes for an interesting visit. Couple of miles east, climb up to the ruins of the Colti fortress in Suseni. The Castle was first mentioned in a written document the 14th century as belonging to the Cindea family. From up here enjoy a spectacular view over the rugged peaks and ridges of the Retezat Mountains. French writer Jules Verne was inspired by the Colti fortress when he wrote his novel "The Castle in the Carpathian Mountains" (Castelul din Carpati). His other two novels whose actions take place in Romania are "The Danube Pilot" and "The Stuborn Keraban".

WEEKEND TRIPS

Corvin Castle - Hunedoara - Castelul Corvinilor

Where: 105 miles east of Timișoara, access: car, bus, train Drive over picturesque hills with secluded villages to Hunedoara. During the 14th and 15th centuries, Hunedoara was one of the main iron extraction and processing centres in Transylvania. The swords and spears manufactured here during this period were renowned across Europe. The town is home to the mighty 15th century Corvinilor Castle (Castelul Corvinilor), one of the most important examples of gothic architecture in Central and Eastern Europe. The region around Hunedoara was one of the earliest settled parts of Romania. Deep in the mountains above Orastie you will find Neolithic remains and vestiges of the Dacian citadels, including Sarmizegetusa Fortress (UNESCO World Heritage Site), seat of kings Burebista and Decebal. The former Dacian capital was conquered by the Romans in 106 AD. Today you can still admire remnants of the forum and the stone amphitheatre, where gladiator shows were held.

Near Hunedoara, you can take in the scenery of Woodlanders' Country (Tara Padurenilor), a region where people have maintained their traditional dress and folklore.

Alba Iulia Fortress

The Alba Iulia citadel, designed by Italian architect Giovanni Morando Visconti, was built between 1716 and 1735, using the Vauban military architectural system—the largest of this kind in South-eastern Europe. The fortress is outstanding both for its architectural elements and for the beauty of its six gates, unique in European military structures. Doubtless the artists, sculptors Johann Koning, Johan Vischer and Giuseppe Tencalla, had been inspired by ancient mythology.
