Issue 3 of the newsletter the communitygroup was working together withSouthampton City council opens spacesteam to redevelop the old rose garden.This had fallen into a state of neglect andlooked unloved.

Through a lot of time and hard work,support from the local residents, catch 22and community payback we have nowsuccessfully completed the beautiful picnicarea within Portswood recreation ground.This can now be enjoyed by everyone whovisits the recreation ground.

The community group has now launched aFriends of Portswood Park Group. Some ofthe aims of this group are to be acommunity reference group for thedevelopment of plans, implementation/maintenance of improvements, to the parkand its play area, also to promote the Park’suse in the community.

If you would like to become a member ofthe Friends of Portswood park groupplease complete the application formbelow.

All memberships’ fee or donations will go towards helping with activities to improve our local area,newsletter and any bbq/social events to be held. The community group is a constituted non profitorganisation funded by donations or grants. Our aims are to enhance the quality of urban life andstrengthen community bonds by creating and sustaining community projects that will fosterenvironmental stewardship, horticultural education, rejuvenation, recreation and use of openspaces. Also improving the area we live in and the wider area of Portswood.

One big community festival - PhotosPortswood Recreation Ground – Picnic Area Project

This newsletter isproduced every twomonths and is aimed atkeeping you informed ofwhat is happening in ourlocal area. The constitutedNSBP Community Groupwill be working to achievemaximum benefits for localresidents by creating andsustaining communityprojects and will feed backregular updates to thelocal community. We shallbe working alongside theCity Council and Policewith regard to any otherprojects to improve thearea of Portswood.

On September 11th 2010 saw the 1st OneBig community festival which took place atPortswood recreation ground. More than5000 people turned up to this spectacularevent which was aimed at the differentcommunities and cultures of Portswoodand the surrounding areas.

Attractions at the event included inflatablefootball pitch, fire brigade, miniature farm,arts & craft workshops, pony rides, rangeof statutory & voluntary services from withinSouthampton, interactive drummingworkshops and much more

There were also live bands and danceperformances all day on the main stage foreveryone to enjoy. This ranged from the

local DM dance studio, Yi Quin liondancing and martial art club, The Skore,Hand to mouth theatre, Djembabes TheShimmering Bees, Southampton Ukuleleand many more.

There was also entertainer around theevent such as Stilt walkers, jugglers, TheMad Hatter, ground walkers and balloonmodellers. Special quest at the event waschildren's favourite Peppa Pig.

The NBSP Portswood community groupwould like to say A BIG THANK YOU toeveryone who help make this festival a bigsuccess and to all those who attended. Welook forward to seeing you again in 2011for the next one big community festival.
