�e renovated Nara Buddhist Sculpture Hall reopened in the spring of 2016. �e building, completed in 1894 (Meiji 27), was designated an Important Cultural Property as representative of Western-style architecture from the Meiji era. In the 120 years since its opening, the hall has continuously functioned as an exhibition space. It was formerly employed for special exhibitions, but since 2000 (Heisei 12), it has been devoted to sculpture. Here, one can regularly view approximately 100 works of Japanese sculpture chie�y from the Asuka to Kamakura periods, as well as works from China and the Korean peninsula. To call the Nara Buddhist Sculpture Hall a treasure trove of Buddhist sculpture from not only Japan but also the world would be no exaggeration. �e museum has made every e�ort to make the exhibits easier to see: larger-than-life-sized statues are no longer kept behind glass but are now close at hand, and when glass cases have been used for Buddhist sculpture, the glass is a hyper-translucent variety coated in a non-re�ective �lm. �e new lighting also features the latest technology and �xtures. We hope that as many people as possible will visit the museum and experience the attraction and feel the presence of the Buddhist statues preserved here.

�Admission Fees for Exhibitions from the Permanent Collection

A group must consist of at least 20 people led by a group leader. Free entry for disabled certificate holders and one accompanying caretaker (upon presenting the certificate). Free entry for people aged 70 years or more (Proof of age is necessary).

A 50% discount on the general admission fee is offered to married couples visiting the museum on this day. In addition, on November 22, married couples can enter the museum free of charge. (The date “22” can be read fūfu which is also the pronunciation of the Japanese word for husband and wife.)* Please inform us that you are visiting as a couple at the ticket booth.* Multiple discounts cannot be combined.

Ritual Bronzes GalleryChinese Ancient Ritual Bronzes:Nara National Museum’s Sakamoto Collection

�e museum’s Sakamoto Collection is housed in separate wing connected by a corridor to the Nara Buddhist Sculpture Hall. On display are over 200 carefully selected ancient Chinese ritual bronzes from the collection that was donated to the museum by the art collector Sakamoto Gorō.
