Convocation Ceremony Proceedings
Explanatory notes for persons performing official acts during the ceremony
11.00 am CHANCELLOR, President Tony Tan Keng Yam and ESQUIRE BEDELL enter the auditorium with the procession group. Chancellor, preceded by the Esquire Bedell, proceeds up the stage using the right staircase. On arrival on stage, all stand in front of seat. Esquire Bedell places mace on table and proceeds to his own seat.
All remain standing for the National Anthem. After National Anthem is played

2 Conferment of Doctor of Science

An honorary doctorate is one of higher education’s most significant accolades. The University awards honorary doctorates to distinguished individuals who
have achieved pre-eminence in their field or profession, or who have made significant contributions to their country, the society or in international relations. They are conferred on individuals who have rendered distinguished service to the University or the community in the advancement of learning and knowledge or who have contributed significantly to the development of their country or the betterment of society and international relations. This year, 2 distinguished individuals have been awarded and they are:

5 Bachelor of Engineering Science and Master of Science in Technology Management

The Renaissance Engineering Programme is a Premier Scholars Programme that aims to nurture students as future leaders of industry. The students are provided with a broad-based, inter-disciplinary engineering education which also includes a one year overseas experience studying in a renowned partner university. This unique curriculum is designed to
nurture engineering leaders with an entrepreneurial spirit to serve society with integrity and excellence. This programme is characterised by the awarding of a Bachelor of Engineering Science, coupled with a Master of Science in Technology Management. Mr Chancellor, may I present the following graduates on whom the degrees of Bachelor of Engineering Science and Master of Science in Technology Management have earlier been conferred.

6 Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medals

Bearing utmost prominence by virtue of the name of the award, the Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medals are awarded in recognition of academic excellence. This year, the gold medals will be awarded to 34 top NTU students who are first in general proficiency throughout their respective programmes of study and who have obtained a First Class Honours Degree. Mr Chancellor, may I present the following graduates who have been awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medals.

7 Koh Boon Hwee Scholars Awards

The Koh Boon Hwee Scholars Award recognises the influence of inspirational teaching and the enduring bonds that are forged between teachers and students. The Award will be presented to 12 top NTU students
who have achieved excellent academic performance, displayed strong leadership ability, demonstrated potential for contributing to society as well as displayed exemplary conduct and been held as role models for their peers. Each Award winner will honour a NTU faculty member and a teacher from his or her former junior college, polytechnic, or an equivalent institution. Each teacher so honoured will have a S$5,000 cash grant established in his or her name. The teacher will

nominate a student from his or her junior college, polytechnic or an equivalent institution to receive the S$5,000 grant upon the student’s admission to NTU.
Mr Chancellor, may I present the following winners, their teachers and NTU faculty members to be honoured.

9 Appreciation to Parents & Families
Valedictorian Proceeds on stage to microphone B and delivers a short speech. At the end of the speech, asks all graduates to stand to face their parents and families and give a round of applause to show their appreciation to them. Pauses for applause to die down. Requests all graduates to be
seated. Bows to Chancellor and returns to seat.
10 End of Proceedings

Stands and says:
I declare this Convocation closed.
Remains standing. All on stage stand, replace caps and await the National Anthem (abridged version). Recessional music follows after the National Anthem.

Leads procession out of Hall, preceded by the Esquire Bedell. Descends by the staircase on his right. Members of the procession retire in reverse order of entry.
11 Plaque-Laying Ceremony All Members Proceed to the robing rooms to remove their ceremonial gowns
before proceeding to the Quad for the presentation of the class plaque.

Notes to All Members of the Academic Procession
Time of Arrival Chancellor 10.40 am Minister for Education 10.35 am Pro-Chancellors 10.30 am BOT Chairman 10.25 am All other members 10.20 am Academic Dress Academic dress will be worn for the ceremony by all persons forming the processional groups. The University will provide caps and gowns for members of the procession where necessary. Members of the procession are welcome to bring your own cap and
gown. Caps should be worn while in procession. Caps will be removed as soon as the assembly is seated (except for Chancellor, the honorary graduands and the graduates). They will be replaced thereafter whenever the assembly stands (e.g. for the National Anthem) and after the Chancellor has declared the Convocation closed. Caps will be worn by officials when performing their duties during the ceremony. Robing Room The robing room is located at the:
- Green Room, Basement Level (for Chancellor) - Blue Room / Crimson Room, Basement Level (for all members)
Procession Order All members are to be robed and ready by 10.50 am. At 10.50 am, members will be called into line.
The Procession will be marshalled in two files and proceed to Foyer 1. The entire procession will enter the auditorium at 11.00 am. There will be a slight gap between groups. On reaching the front of the auditorium near the stage, the procession will branch off to the LEFT and RIGHT and then proceed to the seats on stage. The seats in the first row will be named. Chancellor, preceded by the Esquire Bedell, will proceed up the stage using the RIGHT staircase (refer to stage plan).

Appreciation to Parents & Families A valedictorian will proceed on stage to microphone B and deliver a short speech. At the end of the speech he/she will ask all graduates to stand and give a round of applause to show their appreciation to their parents and families. Conclusion of Ceremony After the Chancellor has declared the Convocation closed, members will replace caps, stand for the National Anthem and remain standing in preparation to leave the auditorium. Chancellor, preceded by the Esquire Bedell, will leave the auditorium using the LEFT staircase. All other processional groups will retrace their steps and leave in reverse order of entry.
Plaque-Laying Ceremony Members of the procession are to proceed to the robing rooms to remove their ceremonial gowns before proceeding to the Quad for the presentation of the class plaque. Reception Members of the procession are invited to join the reception at the foyer of the Nanyang Auditorium after the plaque-laying ceremony.
