Andrews in Birmingham haveidenti ed a key gene that wastrans erred rom a Sicilianplant into a close relative in Britain.The researchers unravelled the

history o an Italian interloper, a close relative othe common British weed Groundsel, that was rstbrought to the UK 300 years ago. This region o DNAmodi es the fowers, making the weed more attractiveto pollinators. The results demonstrate how naturalgenetic e changes can allow important traits to betrans erred between species.This goes against the typical view o evolution as

a one-way street in which each species evolves as aseparate, independent genetic lineage. Hybridisationbetween closely related orms may allow evolutionarycross-talk in which valuable genes can be e changedand preserved. In a study o the greenest lighting options with regardsto li e-cycle, CFL and LED-based lamps are neck andneck, but because LEDs are still improving, and they donot contain mercury, their disposal is less hazardous.According to a Carnegie Mellon study, only two per

cent o the total energy consumed by LEDs is used intheir production. The whole li e-cycle o the productwas taken into account, including the manu acturingprocess, how it is used and the disposal at the end o itsli e. The U.S. Department o Energy has already releaseda ew li e-cycle assessments o LED lights, and theconclusions ound that production is a relatively smallportion o the total li e-cycle impacts o the di erentlight bulb technologies. With LEDs and CFLs, over 98 percent o the energy used is consumed to generate light.

LEDs produce about 30 lumens/watt to CFLs, althoughthe results are very close. Studies predict thate ciencies o 150 lumens/watt are possible or LEDs.(Source: www.treehugger.com)

When choosing a hydroponic system, one o theimportant actors to keep in mind is substrate.Today there is quite a wide variety o ered tothe soilless gardener. Among the most common

are rockwool, clay pebbles, coconut fbre, severalpeat mixes, lava rock, perlite and vermiculite. O course it is important to choose the best adaptedto your growing method.But do you really need a substrate? In act, what

does the substrate do? What is its action?There remains a misconception among growers

that attributes substrate alone to the task o setting up the relations o air and water with theroot system o their plants. In reality the role o the substrate is about 15 per cent in the plantsgrowth, the other 85 per cent being in the handso the grower.
