MY GIRL RED GIVES TEXASTHE GREEN LIGHT
by Chris McGrath
AEverybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.@
Erich Brehm is quoting Mike Tyson. He knows how it might
look, from the outside: this charmed, clockwork progress from
one fairytale to the next. Texas Red (Afleet Alex) cost just
$17,000 as a yearling and--racing for Brehm, trainer Keith
Desormeaux and a bunch of pals--won the GI Breeders= Cup
Juvenile of 2014 by 6 1/2 lengths. Upon his retirement to stud,
Brehm bought Texas Red a mare for $21,000. The resulting foal,
My Girl Red, pulverized her opponents on debut for
Desormeaux at Santa Anita in June; and then, a couple of weeks
ago, followed up with an equally emphatic success in the GII
Sorrento S. (video).
And yes, sure, My Girl Red is the result of a plan. Brehm sat
down and drew up a strategy for getting Texas Red some
traction in his new career. But nobody should be deceived that
its apparently linear fulfillment, to this early point, has been in
any way immune to the vicissitudes that must always be
expected with Thoroughbreds.
AYou could have the greatest plan on earth, and have no idea
what a torturous pathway this is,@ Brehm says. Cont. p3
NEW TURF CHUTE WILL GIVE SANTA ANITA
EXTRA SPRINT OPTIONSby T. D. Thornton
Santa Anita Park has broken ground on a new turf chute
adjacent to the main dirt track's seven-furlong chute that will
allow sprints up to 6 1/2 furlongs to be conducted on the grass
oval.
The new configuration won't be ready in time for the
upcoming meet that commences Sept. 19. But once the
extension is completed, track management is going to consider
reopening the currently closed 6 1/2-furlong downhill turf
course for select usage.
Aidan Butler, the chief strategy officer and executive director
of California racing operations for The Stronach Group (TSG),
which owns Santa Anita, detailed the plans during Thursday's
California Horse Racing Board tele-meeting. Cont. p6

Erich Brehm (center) with Erich Brehm Jr. and wife Janet
My Girl Red cont. from p1 Brehm continues, AOne of the mares I bought the same day as
My Girl Red=s dam, a beautiful, stakes-winning mare, colicked
after she had her Texas Red foal. We lost her, had to get a nurse
mare. Another mare I bought for the first crop, she=d won the
Ontario Debutante Stakes as a 2-year-old, we lost her too, along
with her foal. Then there was the first-crop Texas Red foal out of
the most expensive mare I ever bought. It was out on the
training track, a windy day, something spooked the horse, it
flipped, fractured its skull. And to cap it all, earlier this year, we
lost a full-sister to My Girl Red. When all that happens, it doesn=t
matter how good your plan is. It kind of throws everything out
the window.@
But that doesn=t mean you throw up your hands and give up.
Brehm believed that the same principles that have served him
well in business life could be validly extended even to the
volatile fortunes of the horse industry. He knew that Texas Red
was in the best of hands, with the McLean family at Crestwood
Farm; but he also knew, with the partnership (also comprising
Wayne Detmar, Lee Michaels and Dr. Gene Voss) having
retained a 75% stake in Texas Red, that a game plan was
needed. Forsaking the warmth of Texas, Brehm shivered around
the Keeneland barns at the 2017 January Sale to find suitable
dates for the rookie.
AI felt that if we didn=t support Red, he would never have a
chance,@ Brehm explains. ASo I laid out some criteria about the
kind of mares we needed: mares that were nine years or
younger; that had made over $100,000, or were stakes-placed;
with one or two commercial foals on the ground; and in foal to a
commercial sire. I hoped to keep in a range between $15,000

Erich Brehm with son Erich Jr., wife Janet and daughter Christina
and $40,000. I did better on some, probably spent too much on
others.@
He bought five mares from Book 1. Among these, Morakami
(Fusaichi Pegasus) was a bespoke fit. A Saratoga debut winner
who ran fourth in the GI Spinaway S., she had admittedly just
turned 12 but was being cheaply culled by Watts Humphrey
while in foal to Street Boss. The resulting colt, cashed in that
winter for $55,000, became dual stakes winner Gold Street.
AAnd not only does Morakami produce fast horses, she also
produces durable horses,@ Brehm notes. ALast year, Oh
Marvelous Me (Bluegrass Cat) won a stakes race aged seven.
Over Thinking (Overanalyze) has also made over $200,000, and
was beaten a neck and a nose in a grass stake at Del Mar only
last weekend.@
That=s an encouraging context for a roll of the dice when
Morakami=s Texas Red filly was sent through the ring at the OBS
October Yearling Sale via Lisa McGreevy of Abbie Road Farm.
AI never wanted to not sell a horse so bad in my life,@ says
Brehm. AAll our Texas Red foals were just beautiful, but you
have to try and make sense of the economics along the way,
going back to this whole thing of a business plan. Fortunately I
was doing some pinhooking that helped me, but there came a
time when we had to put some of those babies in a sale. This
was before Gold Street had hit, but I really, really did not want
to sell My Girl Red. I can=t remember, I put the reserve at
$75,000 or $100,000. And when they stopped at $70,000, I was
so happy.@
The filly was sent to April Mayberry to be broken and
pre-trained, and by March she was on her way to Desormeaux
at Santa Anita.
AShe=s a filly that=s just never taken a step backwards,@ Brehm
enthuses. AAt every stage, everybody thought she had ability.
She=s always been correct. She=s very smart, not as spicy as her
dad was. But then I=d say, having looked at so many Texas Reds,
that they have really good minds. I have one with Steve
Asmussen at Lone Star Park, he will nip at you. He has a little
personality of his own. But for the most part, the Reds, you can
walk up to them. They=re very confident.@
The window of commercial opportunity for a young stallion
being so notoriously narrow, it=s hard to overstate the
importance of an early flagbearer as stylish as My Girl Red. With
just 49 going out to bat for Texas Red in his first crop, some
indices are going to be tough in the freshmen=s championship,
but he has already had another stakes-placed runner from 10
starters to date. And Brehm is confident that Texas Red, far
from overloading on his poster girl, has spread his chips around
the roulette wheel.
Poignantly, the filly raised by a nurse mare after the death of
her dam is showing plenty of promise for Patrick Biancone, who
also trains her half-brother, the dual Grade III winner Diamond
Oops (Lookin At Lucky).
AWe named her Viva La Red and I think she=s going to be
outstanding,@ Brehm says. AShe=s big, strong, gorgeous. Patrick
has taken his time, she=s gone through some growth spurts, but
he says she is just like Diamond Oops.
AI do think you need two [first-crop stars] because everybody
can say a >onesie= is luck, right? You have two, it=s a different
deal. But I think we have other horses in the mix, some good
ones coming. A couple should have won already, with better
luck. The good news is I don=t think anybody expected Red to
have 2-year-olds. We expected them to be mile-and-eighth,
mile-and-a-quarter, coming around as 3-year-olds. But right now
I=m tracking 21 that have had official works.@
Certainly there=s no doubt that Texas Red maintained his form
as a sophomore. Though sidelined for the Triple Crown series,
he ran Lord Nelson (Pulpit) to a neck around one turn and
stretched out to beat Frosted (Tapit) in the GII Jim Dandy S. But
it was for his theatrical, last-to-first romp at the Breeders= Cup
that he is best remembered, spectacular vindication for
Desormeaux=s perseverance at the previous year=s September
Sale.
The trainer had never lost faith in Afleet Alex; had just needed
to wait until he went out of fashion. Even so, he couldn=t believe
it when this one slipped through the cracks.
ATexas Red was a stunning physical,@ Brehm says. ABut by that
stage nobody was going to pinhook an Afleet Alex, that ship had
sailed, so he was relegated to the back of the book. Keith has
such a great eye--he picked Texas Red, he picked Exaggerator
(Curlin), he picked many others. And he saw a perfect horse that
everybody else ignored, back of day nine, and it just happened
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 5 OF 12 • THETDN.COM FRIDAY • AUGUST 21, 2020
Texas Red winning the Breeders= Cup Juvenile | Horsephotos
that nobody came back at $17,000. It=s funny: it=s never been
asked, and I never even thought about it until right now. How
high would Keith have gone? Interesting. I=ll have to ask him that
the next time we talk.@
Texas Red was denied the 2-year-old championship only by
American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile), who had laid down his
Triple Crown marker in the GI FrontRunner S. over the same
circuit as the Breeders= Cup Juvenile. Texas Red closed for third
that day.
ABut there=s one interesting stat that everybody leaves out,@
says Brehm. AWe all know that luck takes a big part in this game.
We got a bad break that day. Not that that=s an excuse, but
running the same mile and 1/16th at the Breeders= Cup, we
actually ran faster. Unfortunately [their next encounter] in the
Travers, Red hit the gate and hurt himself, and American
Pharaoh didn=t have his best race either. So we never had a day
where both American Pharaoh and Texas Red were at the top of
their game. I think that would have been really spectacular.@
Regardless, Texas Red gave hope to everyone. He showed that
a second-week scavenger can still beat the Book 1 tycoons with
Hip 2703. Brehm had transferred his regular Breeders= Cup
house party--a gloriously ritualized jamboree of golf, poker,
gambling, food and drink--from his home outside Dallas to Santa
Anita.
AAnd I don=t think we=re over it yet,@ he says. AI mean, it was
just the most jubilation you can imagine. My wife, my family, my
kids were all there, friends I grew up with in Chicago. And then
when we won, it was just crazy. I mean, you just can=t imagine
that happened.
AWhere I grew up in Chicago, we didn=t even have grass. I had
a bus line on my street. But when I was in pre-med at college, a
friend and I would study every night till 10:00 and then we=d go
out to the harness track, which was open until midnight, and bet
the last two or three races.@
Actually, they proved pretty hot on their trifectas, but a more
reliable income was required upon graduation and Brehm
became a respiratory therapist.
ABut I was working shifts from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.,@ he recalls.
AAnd it didn=t take me long, seeing the sales guys strolling in, to
decide that they had a much better life. So I switched to medical
sales, started my own company a couple of times. One or two
failed, but then I had one that was successful, in laser rentals,
and I sold it.@
He has since remained in the cardiovascular field, while his
own heart became ever more consumed with Thoroughbreds.
Among horsemen, of course, there is growing curiosity about
cardiac capacity, but Brehm=s immersion goes far beyond what
he feels to be a marginal crossover.
AI would say it=s a piece of it, but if you have the greatest heart
on earth and don=t have the mind, you=re not going to succeed,@
he says. AWe=ve talked about this, some of my horse partners--
one is a cardiologist in Montreal, and another=s a transplant
surgeon in Toronto--and the feeling is that the tests they=re
using on horses right now aren=t really significant to us.
AI think where it all became fun was when my wife and I came
to Texas. There was no racing, gambling was illegal, and so we
started going to sales, we read everything we could, and after
about 10 years we bought a mare. A daughter of Seattle Slew.
And actually the first time we picked the stallion, which was
Citidancer in Maryland, the foal turned out a stakes horse. From
that point on, we were going to be in the game one way or
another.@
Now Brehm hopes the wheel can turn again. Not just for
himself, his family and friends; nor just for Desormeaux. He
wants others out there to mine the same seam; for the word to
spread that Texas Red, having already proved himself a conduit
of unsuspected brilliance as a $17,000 yearling, is now going to
do much the same as a $10,000 stallion. Perhaps he can even
extend his Eclipse Award rivalry with American Pharoah to their
second career.
AWhat the market is looking for is big, correct, precocious
horses,@ he says. AAnd Texas Red was an almost perfect physical,
and he was precocious. But he didn=t come from War Front, he
didn=t come from A.P. Indy, so his good-looking babies were
pushed to the back of the catalog--just like he was. We don=t
have the numbers, so obviously it=s going to be harder. But if we
continue to do the right things, I think we can match up in
[percentage] performance. Yes, Pharaoh got off to a great start,
but hopefully Red=s now doing the same.@
Brehm casts his mind back to the day he bought back My Girl
Red.
AUnless you=re a bazillionaire--and I=m not--you=re trying to
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 6 OF 12 • THETDN.COM FRIDAY • AUGUST 21, 2020
Erich and Janet Brehm at Royal Ascot
make a business work,@ he muses. AAnd it=s a challenge. But
we=ve hung in. My wife Janet has been spectacular: she=s always
supported me, never questioned my commitment to the game,
even my occasional over-commitment. My son Erich Jr. is also
extremely involved; he manages two racing partnerships
himself. But a lot of people have helped me along the way:
Keith, April, Lisa, Archie St. George. And I think they=re really
happy for me because they know what I went through to get
here.
AI guess you look at My Girl Red and say that=s pretty lucky. But
there=s two kinds of luck, good and bad, and we=ve had our
share of both. When a horse who=s been perfect up until that
morning flips at the track and crushes his skull, you=re like, >How
did that happen?= But when you buy a $17,000 yearling and he
wins the Breeders= Cup, you=re like, >How did that happen?!=
We=ve been very lucky, no doubt about it. But I mean, it wasn=t
without a lot of effort. I tried a lot of different things. So I think
there=s a part of it where you make your luck too.@
Santa Anita Turf Chute cont. from p1 "We have just been granted the authority by the Arcadia
planning [officials] to actually build a second chute for the turf
racing," Butler said. "A best guesstimation is we may be able to
get it ready for the [Dec. 26] race meet. Our intent is to not only
have a 6 1/2-[furlong] start on the turf oval, but to actually have
a six-furlong [start]. So that then would give us five-eighths, 5
1/2, six furlongs, and 6 1/2 on the turf oval.
Butler said TSG would then begin to formulate plans for
getting back up and running on Santa Anita's distinctive downhill
turf course, "potentially bringing that back slowly and keeping it
[available] for special purposes."
Until the 2018 autumn meet, Santa Anita had never carded
turf sprints that started on the back straight. But that October
the racing department began writing some grass sprints for the
first time at five furlongs to give greater flexibility in race
distances.
Then came the 2019 winter/spring meet that produced a
30-horse fatality crisis at Santa Anita. At that time, track
management flagged the downhill turf course as a safety
concern and closed it after the death of a sprinter who suffered
a catastrophic injury on the portion of the configuration that
crosses the main dirt track and rejoins the inside of the grass
home straight at the top of the stretch.
Turf sprints for the remainder of the 2019 spring meet were
carded for five furlongs, starting on the back straightaway like at
most other North American tracks.
When Santa Anita hosted the 2019 Breeders' Cup World
Championships in November, both the GI Turf Sprint and the GII
Juvenile Turf Sprint were changed from 6 1/2 furlongs down the
hill to five furlongs on the oval.
After building a chute to accommodate a 5 1/2-furlong start
point for turf sprints that actually begins on a portion of the
main track, Santa Anita then started carding those races up until
closing day of the 2020 spring season.
"What we've found is that the 6 1/2 [furlongs] down the hill is
potentially overutilized in our mindset," Butler told the CHRB
commissioners. "It's such a spectacular race, and we believe it
should remain a spectacular race."
Aesthetics aside, Butler added that having two additional start
points saves wear and tear on the course itself, which gets
chewed up from horses blasting out of the starting gate at sprint
distances.
"So having both [options], if we can, down the hill and on the
oval, will give us a lot more programmability," Butler said. "And,
with the extra starting distances, primarily six furlongs, we think
it's good for the horsemen and good for the opportunities for
owners."
Alan Balch, the executive director of the California
Thoroughbred Trainers, told the CHRB the move would indeed
be a "great step" forward.
"I went out and looked at it this morning. It's well underway,"
Balch said. "That's going to add a tremendous amount of options
and variety to the racing program, especially given how much
more as a proportion of overall racing is on the turf....
Particularly in conjunction with the specialized use, we hope [to]
return sometime [to the use of] the full hillside."

ACKNOWLEDGING >INCONSISTENCIES= IN
NEW TIMING SYSTEM, EQUIBASE SAYS DEL
MAR TURF RACES WILL BE HAND TIMED FOR
REST OF MEET
In response to reports of inaccurate times being produced for
Del Mar turf races by its new Gmax GPS timing system, Equibase
said in a statement Thursday that Del Mar will hand time its turf
races for the rest of the meet. The statement also admitted the
company found "inconsistencies" in the Gmax timing of Del Mar
turf races that it will work to fix before the fall meet at the
seaside oval.
ADel Mar racetrack will be utilizing hand timing for turf races
for the remainder of the summer meet,@ the statement read.
AThe times produced by the Equibase GPS System for dirt races
have proven to be highly accurate and will continue to be
provided. Last week, we discovered some inconsistencies with
respect to the GPS survey and our historical survey relating to
the turf course that we will work to rectify before Del Mar's

JUDGE ALLOWS NAVARRO TO MOVE TO
OCALA, FORBIDS CONTACT WITH
RACEHORSES by T. D. Thornton
The banned trainer Jorge Navarro, one of the most prominent
targets among 27 individuals facing federal charges in an alleged
"widespread, corrupt scheme" to dope racehorses, has been
granted court permission to leave the Southern District of New
York jurisdiction and move his family to Ocala, Florida.
But the endorsement signed Thursday by United States Judge
Mary Kay Vyskocil that modified Navarro's bail conditions made
it clear that the alleged doper "shall have no contact whatsoever
with racehorses."
Ocala, the heart of Florida's horse country, is part of the
Middle District of Florida in the federal court system. The judge's
endorsement also contained the clearance that "Mr. Navarro is
permitted to travel to the Southern District of Florida only for
the purposes of meeting with his counsel or visiting his mother
or sister, but only with prior notice to and authorization from
Pretrial Services."
Navarro and the now-barred trainer Jason Servis were
arrested Mar. 9 and alleged to be the lead figures atop a vast
network of co-conspirators who allegedly manufactured,
mislabeled, rebranded, distributed and administered
performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) to racehorses all across
America and in international races.
In intercepted phone calls between Servis and Navarro that
are to be used as evidence, the two trainers allegedly
coordinated the procurement and administration of SGF-1000, a
customized PED intended to promote tissue repair and increase
a racehorse's stamina and endurance beyond its natural
capability.
On Aug. 16, during the annual Round Table Conference, Stuart
Janney III, The Jockey Club's chairman, said that additional
doping charges against other individuals are in the pipeline. "I
have no doubt there are many arrests pending," he said.
The next status conference in the federal case is scheduled for
Nov. 19.

Cotillion S. The 4-year-old, also the winner of the GII
Twinspires.com Fair Grounds Oaks and third-place finisher in the
GI Alabama S., retires with earnings of more than $1.1 million.
"Street Band was a special filly for our barn," said trainer Larry
Jones, who also bred the filly with Cindy Jones and Ray Francis.
"She had so much class to go with her Grade I talent. It's
bittersweet to see her go, but we are proud that she proved
herself to be among the best of her generation."
Street Band is the sixth winner from seven to race produced by
Street Minstrel, a daughter of top-class broodmare sire Street
Cry and half-sister to two other stakes horses. Street Band's
second dam is GISW Minstrel's Lassie (The Minstrel), a half-sister
to Mintly (Key to the Mint), the granddam of two-time
Australian Group 1 winner Manighar (Linamix {Fr}).
Phillip Shelton, manager of Taylor Made's Medallion Racing
said, "Street Band took our Medallion partners on an incredible
journey. She was our first Grade I winner, beating a star-studded
field in the Grade I Cotillion. We will always remember her
pulling her last-to-first charge to beat Grade I winners Guarana,
Serengeti Empress, Bellafina, and champion Jaywalk."
Taylor Made Sales Agency will consign Street Band to the
Fasig-Tipton November Sale, which will be held immediately
following the Breeders' Cup on Sunday, Nov. 8.

Peyton Skaggs Founder of The Working Cat Project
Rohan Munnolimath
IF SOMETHING NEEDS TO GET DONE, ASK A
BUSY PRE-MED STUDENTby Diana Pikulski
Peyton Skaggs is a junior in the Lewis Honors College of the
University of Kentucky studying neuroscience and psychology.
She was recently accepted into the University of Kentucky's
College of Medicine Early Assurance Program. Somehow, she
also found time to start The Working Cat Project (WCP), a non-
profit based out of Lexington, Ky. The goal of WCP is to build a
network of property owners willing to provide a safe haven for
at-risk feral cats as barn cats. The program is nearing the 100
cats-placed milestone and has networked with more than 30
farms in Kentucky. Diana Pikulski caught up with Skaggs to talk
about the program/service.
DP: Tell me a little about yourself and how you came to start
The Working Cat Project.
PS: I was born and raised here in Kentucky and I love Kentucky. I
plan on staying. I am a junior at UK and I will be attending
University of Kentucky College of Medicine.
I grew up with adopted pets and got into animal rescue myself
when I was around 17. During my senior year in high school, I
fostered my first litter of kittens. Once I began college, I started

volunteering doing social media for Spay Our Strays of
Lexington, Ky, and volunteering at spay/neuter clinics; this was
my first experience with feral cats. I continued to volunteer for
nearly a year until my cat Jack passed away. I was absolutely
devastated, but decided to turn my pain into something
beautiful to honor his life.
I learned about perils for feral cats the hard way when I found
a kitten in my neighborhood but I was unable to catch him. I
tried speaking to neighbors to see if anyone was feeding or
caring for the kitten and learned the hostility that often exists
towards stray cats and how people will even try to kill them.
Fast forward a few weeks to Jan. 1, 2020, and I was on a train in
France writing my goals for the new year. "Establish a barn cat
program" was my number one goal and here we are eight
months later.
DP: Where do your cats come from and who goes through the
process of catching them and figuring out their best future?
PS: Cats in our program typically come from local shelters or
unsafe, outdoor living conditions. These cats are either too feisty
or too shy/fearful of people to be adopted as pets. We mostly
work with shelters and rarely have to trap cats ourselves.
However, we have had a couple of situations where cats were in
danger in outdoor colonies and we have had to intervene and
trap the cats. Normally, I get a request from a shelter, I book an
appointment for the cat to be spayed/neutered, arrange
transport to and from the vet appt, arrange for the cat to
recover at one of our board member's houses, scan through
approved applications, select an application based on specific
details such as the number of cats wanted, and lastly do the
placement!
DP: How does the placement process work in order to give the
cat the best chance of success?
PS: We do a four-week kenneled orientation. So, for four weeks,
the cat is kept in a large kennel with an open carrier inside and
the cat gets used to the people who will be feeding it and the
noise and activity level around them. That way they are likely to
stay once you open the kennel. Some of the cats become very
friendly and accustomed to people.
DP: In under a year you are about to reach the 100 cats-placed
milestone. To what do you attribute your success?
PS: As of Aug. 20, we have placed 98 cats! The majority of cats I
have placed have gone to horse farms. So far, we have placed
cats everywhere from Prospect, Ky. to Somerset, Ky. Most of our
placements are closer to Lexington in Paris and Versailles. I am
astonished by the success we have had. I am an extremely
passionate person and when I set my mind to something, it gets
done. Kentucky is full of animals in need due to the lack of
animal cruelty laws. Plus, Kentucky is full of farms and barns and
people who care about animals. Making the connection is the
key. Plus, WCP has an amazing board of directors.
DP: Do you have a background with horses?
PS: No, unless horse camp as a kid counts. I have always loved
animals but have never really ridden. Jorge Vasquez and Sara
Holman at Commonwealth Polo Club recently had an event for
us and raised over $1,500. Now, I think I might take a few polo
lessons! You will have to stay tuned to hear how that turns out.
DP: Do any placement successes really stand out for you?
PS: Trooper is a sweet boy who was found injured and alone in
downtown Lexington. He was living in the sewer. We think he's
about 10-years-old. He keeps the tractor seat warm and
watches the sunsets with his human family. Doc, a mostly black
cat, was found in rural Ohio and taken to a shelter. He was
extremely feral when we first pulled him and now he is totally
docile and spends his days on the bales of hay and loving on his
new mom, Jill. When a cat who really seemed afraid and alone
can become comfortable and secure in his home, it's the best
feeling.
DP: What is your most pressing need right now?
PS: We desperately need farms willing to adopt. We provide
everything for the kenneling process and ensure the cat is fully
vetted prior to reaching their final destination.

TVG TO SHARE PACIFIC CLASSIC SPOTLIGHT WITH
CARMA, DONATE 5,000 FACEMASKS TO
BACKSTRETCH WORKERS Celebrating its 10th year as the title sponsor of the GI TVG
Pacific Classic, TVG will shine this weekend=s spotlight on one of
the country=s leading Thoroughbred aftercare organizations,
California Retirement Management Account (CARMA), and will
donate more than 5,000 face coverings to backstretch
communities at its partner tracks in California, New Jersey,
Kentucky and other states beginning this week, TVG announced
Thursday.
AAs part of celebrating our 10th year as the title sponsor of the
TVG Pacific Classic, we wanted to reaffirm our support of
CARMA and the tremendous work it does to ensure the humane
aftercare of our equine athletes, and we also want to express
our appreciation to the hardworking men and women who are
the heart of the sport,@ said Kip Levin, the president of FanDuel
and CEO of TVG. AThe backstretch communities across the US
have worked tirelessly to keep racing going throughout the
COVID-19 pandemic and the distribution of these masks is just a
small gesture of our gratitude.@
In conjunction with the TVG Pacific Classic, TVG is making a
$25,000 donation to CARMA, a California-based initiative that
provides funding for the rehabilitation, retraining and
retirement of California-raced horses. TVG=s Dave Weaver will
also be playing the Pacific Classic Betting Challenge with his
entry paid for by TVG and all winnings will be donated to
CARMA.

Horse race betting goes mainstream with major sports on
hiatus
To date, horse racing has received more than 600 hours of
television coverage on major sports networks compared to
roughly 150 hours last year. In the second quarter wagering
report by the state of Oregon, where National ADW wagering is
tracked, TVG, the leading horse racing network and one of the
largest legal online gaming companies, more than doubled its
wagering totals from a year ago. The network hit record TV
ratings over the course of the last 3 months.

FANDUEL NAMED TITLE SPONSOR OF BREEDERS'
CUP MILE FanDuel, America's premier gaming destination, will become
the title sponsor of the $2-million GI Breeders' Cup Mile at this
year's Breeders' Cup World Championships.
In addition, two of FanDuel Group's major charity partners will
be incorporated into its naming rights for this year's event--the
FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile presented by PDJF and the GI TVG
Breeders' Cup Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare
Alliance.
The Breeders' Cup, one of Thoroughbred racing's most
prestigious international events, consisting of 14 races and
purses and awards totaling $35 million, is scheduled to be held
Nov. 6-7 at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky.
For several years, FanDuel subsidiary TVG, America's Horse
Racing network, has partnered with the Jockeys' Guild's
Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF), on initiatives
including an annual telethon, and with the Thoroughbred
Aftercare Alliance, to raise awareness and funding for both
organizations.
"We are excited that FanDuel will become the title sponsor of
the Breeders' Cup Mile and thank them for their commitment to
the World Championships," said Breeders' Cup President and
CEO Drew Fleming. "Since announcing our multi-year agreement
last year, we have enjoyed an outstanding relationship with
FanDuel and TVG as they have expanded and strengthened their
support of the Breeders' Cup and Thoroughbred racing."
"Building off an amazing start last year, FanDuel and TVG are
looking forward to this year's Breeders' Cup and to working
together to create new fans for horse racing," said Kip Levin,
CEO of TVG. "We appreciate Breeders' Cup's and NBC Sports'
cooperation in including our charity partners into the race
names for this year. Both the PDJF and Thoroughbred Aftercare
Alliance do so much to help provide care and resources for our
athletes and we wanted to share the spotlight with them on two
of our sport's biggest days."
In 2019, Breeders' Cup and FanDuel announced a
comprehensive multi-year sponsorship agreement making TVG
and FanDuel the official Wagering Partners of the Breeders' Cup
World Championships. TVG will retain its title sponsorship of the
$2-million TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile, which also was
announced last year.

Stan the Man had a trio of wins to his credit from six starts in
2019, including the Big A=s Queen=s County S. in December, but
was winless in three prior starts this term. Off the board in the
nine-furlong Jazil S. and the one-mile Stymie S. this winter, the
chestnut was second behind Firenze Fire (Poseidon=s Warrior)
when cutting back to 6 1/2 furlongs in Belmont=s GII True North
S. June 27. Getting blinkers off for this abbreviated test, the
gelding caboosed the field in fifth as Ready to Escape (More
Than Ready) led through fractions of :22.38 and :45.02. Six wide
turning for home, Stan the Man was shoulder to shoulder with
the rest in early stretch, but shook loose in the final sixteenth of
a mile and was 1 1/2 lengths clear of My Boy Tate at the wire.
T Loves a Fight and Binkster dead-heated for third.
ABeing on the inside, he broke well, but everybody sent right
away, so I let him be there,@ said winning rider Joel Rosario. AI
didn't want to chase them and just stayed inside for a bit and he
didn't mind that. Turning for home, I came outside, and that's
what he wanted to do. I wanted to be in the clear. I had the best
horse in the race and I didn't want to be stuck on the inside the
way the race was going. I was just looking to get in the clear. He
finished really well.@
In regards to the gelding=s latest equipment change, trainer
John Terranova explained, AI toyed with taking blinkers off him
for awhile now. After seeing his last race and a couple of early
works up here, he wants to look around a little more. He likes a
target and likes to see other horses...After seeing his last race,
he made the front in the True North and to us it seemed like he
waited a little bit. Obviously, he got run down by a top-class
horse [Firenze Fire], so no disgrace there it since was a great
effort. The first couple of works up here I thought were a little

you want to be there but we thought it would be something to
move forward off of if it worked. And it sure did.@

LEAD GUITAR (f, 4, Maclean=s Music--Eleadora {SP}, by Finality)
kicked off the season with a score in a Churchill Downs
allowance June 7 while debuting for Eddie Kenneally. Fourth
going six furlongs on the dirt against optional claiming company
at Keeneland July 9, Lead Guitar was fifth last out over the soft
Ellis turf in the Kentucky Downs Preview Ladies Sprint S. Aug. 2.
Sent off the 6-5 choice here, the New York-bred was a wide fifth
in the early going and took the inner route approaching the half-
mile pole. Four wide turning for home, she rallied on the inside

THANKFUL (f, 3, American Pharoah--Beholden, by Cat Thief),
ninth in her career debut going 8 1/2 furlongs over the
Gulfstream turf in May, came home a well-beaten second trying
that distance over the Belmont dirt June 18. The 4-5 choice to
go one better while adding extra yardage this time, the bay
stumbled out of the gate, but settled in fifth entering the
backstretch. An in-touch fourth following a half mile in :49.61,
Thankful was asked to pick up the tempo as they entered the far
turn and took control--with Heavenly Sis (Hard Spun) in close
pursuit--approaching the quarter pole. Despite looking like a
battle was about to ensue, Thankful drew clear through the lane
en route to a 3 1/2-length victory. Heavenly Sis was second with
Tonal Verse (Tonalist) third. The winner, who is a half to Behold

winner Brazen Persuasion (Indian Charlie), $148,910, is out of

Love cruises to victory in the Yorkshire Oaks | racingfotos.com
EASY FOR LOVE IN THEYORKSHIRE OAKS
Some stellar fillies have crossed York=s Knavesmire down the
years, but the G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Epsom Oaks heroine
Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is up there with the best after her
saunter through Thursday=s G1 Darley Yorkshire Oaks. With an
epic G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe in the offing in six weeks=
time, there will be few who will sleep easy with Ballydoyle=s
leading prospect looming large on the horizon. While her
performances in the June 7 Newmarket and July 4 Epsom
Classics left none in any doubt that she was in a territory of her
own, this staging post to ParisLongchamp only served to confirm
her elevated level of ability and the fact remains that on the first
Sunday in October she will be getting weight from all her main
rivals. Ryan Moore proved just a passenger here, with the 4-9
favourite travelling smoothly in second tracking Manuela de
Vega (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) before being shaken up to take
control approaching two out. If the slightly easy ground was
compromising her, it did not seem so as she proved totally
dominant en route to a five-length success from the progressive
Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}), with One Voice (Ire) (Poet=s Voice
{GB}) two lengths back in third as they finished strung out.
AShe=s straightforward and realistically this was her easiest task
for a while,@ her rider commented. AThey had to step up to run
to her level and she was very professional--it was business as
usual for her today.@ Cont. p2
ADJUSTMENT TO DEAUVILLE SELECT DATES After announcing on Wednesday that its Deauville Select Sale
would be moved forward a little more than two weeks to
accommodate the UK government=s quarantine requirement for
visitors from France, Arqana made another minor adjustment to
those dates on Thursday.
The sale will now be staged on Sept. 9 to 11 to avoid a clash
with the Tattersalls Ascot yearling sale.
"With so many constraints coming into play and such a
restricted time period to stage all American and European
yearling sales, it is virtually impossible to please everyone and
sales clashes are almost inevitable,@ said Arqana Chief Executive
Officer Eric Hoyeau. AHowever, Arqana and Tattersalls have
agreed that cooperation is paramount amid the current crisis
and that we should do our utmost to make attendance at our
sales compatible for vendors and buyers alike."

Love blossoms in the Yorkshire Oaks | PA Media
Easy For Love In The Yorkshire Oaks cont. from p1
AThe ground=s a bit dead and it was a worry for her, as when I
rode her in the Debutante last year I thought it was a bit slow
for her but she=s obviously thrived and got stronger. She=s been
exceptional every start and we=ll see how she is over the next six
weeks.@
Aidan O'Brien was full of praise afterwards. "She was always
very exciting--I don't know if we've ever had as an exciting a filly
at this stage. I can't name one that has been as exciting as her at
this stage ever," he said. "When you're training them and
they're your own, you don't ever want to get carried away, but
it's her movement and her pace and her action and her
attitude--that's the makings of those great horses and she seems
to have all that. She has looked very special from the minute she
ran in the Guineas. We thought she was a very good filly last
year, but we thought she'd be a middle-distance filly, so when
she did that in the Guineas we weren't sure what would happen
in the Oaks. But when she went up in trip she was very happy
and for her to do that today, after having a break since the Oaks,
was very good. We were nervous about today because of the
ground, but know now we could run on good to soft. We
couldn't be happier with what she's done. We were delighted
with today and if she comes out of today well and goes on to the
Arc, we'd be looking forward to it."
Love seems to have been growing in stature with each passing
month, causing an upset but leaving no one in any doubt that
she clear best in the G3 Silver Flash S. over seven furlongs at
Leopardstown last July and following up in the G1 Moyglare Stud
S. at The Curragh in September. In between, she was undone by
easy ground when fifth in the G2 Debutante S. at that latter
venue and it may be that the similar going took the edge off her
as she was third in the G1 Fillies= Mile at Newmarket in October.
Her performances this season have taken her to the top of the
tree among her stable=s 3-year-olds and while Serpentine (Ire)
(Galileo {Ire}) gets the chance to back up his Derby romp in next
month=s G1 Grand Prix de Paris, it will be a surprise if Moore is
not on Love in the Arc.
Sir Mark Prescott was left to reflect on a masterclass of
plotting, with Alpinista having only won her listed race a week
previously. "That went exactly as I hoped it might, because
Alpinista got second in a Group 1 without having to have too
hard a race," he told the Racing Post. "To be honest I don=t think
she would have been entered under normal circumstances. I
was looking for the big black-type and once you=ve got it you can
be a bit more creative, especially with a filly. This was a huge
day for Miss Rausing. I=ve been lucky enough to train the dam
Alwilda and the granddam Albanova, as well as Albanova=s sister
Alborada."
According to the Post, Prescott is looking at either Doncaster=s
G2 Park Hill S. or a Group 2 for fillies over a mile and a half at
Baden-Baden. "Miss Rausing is marvellous when it comes to
keeping fillies and mares going, and Alwilda and Albanova were
both five when they won their most important races,@ he said.
ASometimes when she wins with one that has taken a bit of time
I like to say that it was a case of 'winner trained by Miss Rausing
at Lanwades Stud', because I would have given up."

Pedigree Notes The winner is a half-sister to Lucky Kristale (GB) (Lucky Story),
who captured the G2 Lowther S. at this meeting having won the
G2 Cherry Hinton S. The dam Pikaboo (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) has
done well with matings with Galileo, producing this stable=s
Group 3-winning fillies Flattering (Ire) and Peach Tree (Ire) for
the Coolmore monarch before Love appeared. Pikaboo is a half-
sister to the seven-furlong specialist and dual G2 Park S.-winning
sire Arabian Gleam (GB) by Pivotal=s son Kyllachy (GB), and the
listed-winning sprinter Kimberella (GB) also by Kyllachy. Two
other of her half-siblings Light Quest (Quest For Fame {GB}) and
Cute (GB) (Diktat {GB}) have also proven smart producers in
their own right. The former was responsible for the G3 Prix Fille
de l=Air scorer and stakes producer Skia (Fr) (Motivator {GB})
and the Singapore Gold Cup winner Tropaios (GB) (Excellent Art
{GB}), while Cute is the dam of the recent Listed Midsummer S.
winner and G1 Prix d=Ispahan third Pogo (Ire) (Zebedee {GB}).
This is also the family of the G1 English and Irish 2000 Guineas-
winning sire Don=t Forget Me (Ire) (Ahonoora {GB}).

MISS AMULET HANGS TOUGH IN THE
LOWTHER Having beaten Frenetic (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) in the Listed
Marwell S. over five furlongs at Naas on Aug. 3, Miss Amulet
(Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) was one of the main contenders for
Thursday=s G2 Sky Bet Lowther S. at York and she lived up to the
billing when holding off Sacred (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) in
a pulsating finale. Always prominent, the 15-2 shot was
marginally ahead approaching the furlong pole before being
joined by that 15-8 favourite soon after. Pulling out extra for
James Doyle in the run to the line, the latest juvenile talent from
the Ken Condon stable had a length to spare over that G2 Queen
Mary S. runner-up at the line, with Umm Kulthum (Ire) (Kodiac
{GB}) 3 1/4 lengths behind in third. AShe had experience and
that definitely counted today--she knuckled down well late on,@
commented Doyle, who had ridden Sacred on both her previous
starts. AI know the runner-up has got plenty of ability and I was
slightly worried, especially with my filly going up in trip but she=s
really battled hard.@
Miss Amulet started out in the five-furlong maiden won by
>TDN Rising Star= More Beautiful (War Front) at Naas on June 8
and was seventh and one place ahead of the subsequent G2
Airlie Stud S. winner and G1 Phoenix S. third Aloha Star (Ire)
(Starspangledbanner {Aus}). Fourth next time over 164 yards
further at Navan on June 23, the grey left that form behind
when scoring by five lengths back over five at Cork on July 5
before running second to Measure of Magic (Ire) (Kodi Bear
{Ire}) at Down Royal on July 24. Reversing that form as she
captured the Marwell, this was the furthest she had been asked
to race but as Sacred dragged her into battle in the final 100
yards she gave generously to add to the stable=s G2 Railway S.
success courtesy of Laws of Indices (Ire) (Power {GB}).
AI love her attitude and she=s clearly still improving--I don=t
know where she=ll stop,@ Condon said. AShe took all the
travelling well, which is a bonus, and she=s really progressive.@

AWe=ll be looking at the [G1] Cheveley Park now, why not--let=s
see where she ends up, when these fillies are improving you
never know. I=ve had runners in this race before so it=s great to
win it, it carries huge prestige. We have a lovely team of
2-year-olds this season and the wonderful part of it all is none of
them cost a great deal. This filly cost less than ,8,000, so it=s a
great story.@
Sacred=s trainer William Haggas said, AShe ran a good race, but
didn=t quite last out. I=m sure Exceed and Excel=s prefer top-of-
the-ground, but I don=t want to take anything away from the
winner. I thought she ran a solid race. My first reaction is to go
back to five furlongs for the [G2] Flying Childers at Doncaster
and take it from there.@

BATTAASH BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT Despite the turmoil of the current world situation, it can only
be described as a golden summer as far as the horses are
concerned with Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), Stradivarius (Ire)
(Sea the Stars {Ire}) and Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) making
history in their respective divisions. Friday sees the continuation
of the welcome saga as the latter bids to follow up last year=s
tumultuous success in the G1 Coolmore Nunthorpe S. at York.
Breaking his duck in this race
and Dayjur=s track record in the
process in 2019, Shadwell=s
dragster comes here on the
back of a fourth consecutive
triumph in the July 31 G2 King
George S. at Goodwood, having
registered back-to-back wins in
the June 16 G1 King=s Stand S.
at Royal Ascot. His record is
frightening on the whole and
he now seems fully mature, but
there is hope for the opposition
as only three runs back he was
beating just two of his 15 rivals
in the G1 Prix de l=Abbaye de
Longchamp.
Charlie Hills is well aware of the pitfalls as he awaits his stable
star=s latest mission. AThere are so many things that can go
wrong in these sprint races,@ he said. AIt hasn=t been
straightforward by any stretch of the imagination. It=s been well-
documented he was tricky as a 2-year-old and he was gelded
then, but now he=s got more races under his belt he=s a proper
professional in everything he does. We have Craig and Gary
Witheford looking after him down at the start now and they=ve
got to know him very well. You=d like to think we=ve got most
things covered.@
AWe=re lucky to have horses like Stradivarius, Enable and him
being kept in training until they=re six years old. They start to get
such a following and become very popular,@ he added. AHe has
this sheer brilliance of speed and seems to have captured the
imagination of everybody. I=m really happy with where the horse
is at the moment--he seems in great shape. He=s very much a
pampered pet.@ Jim Crowley added, AHe=s done it for the last
four years now and I=m very lucky to ride him--they don=t come
around like him very often.@
Taking on Battaash are a pair of 3-year-olds who have yet to
be fully exposed in Art Power (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and A=Ali
(Ire) (Society Rock {Ire}), with the former carrying the King
Power Racing silks and impressing when taking the six-furlong
G3 Lacken S. at Naas on July 4. A=Ali has won the July 5 G3
Sandown Sprint S. and The Curragh=s G2 Sapphire S. on July 19,
with the latter performance particularly striking as he was
forced to race alone. Art Power=s trainer Tim Easterby said,
AEvery drop of rain that falls will be very much appreciated. It=s
not that he has to have soft ground, it=s just that he stays six
furlongs so against these five-furlong horses if it slows them
down a tad that will help. We=ve been happy with everything
he=s done this season, so hopefully it continues.@ Ed Crisford
said, AA=Ali is in good form and
we=re looking forward to it.
Battaash is obviously going to
be tough to beat, as is Art
Power. But A=Ali deserves a
crack at a Group 1 and I think
the track will suit--he should
run a good race.@
In the G2 Weatherbys
Hamilton Lonsdale Cup,
Stradivarius=s stablemate
Enbihaar (Ire) (Redoute=s
Choice {Aus}) is an able deputy
on her first try at two miles.
Stepping up in trip having
registered back-to-back wins in
Goodwood=s G2 Lillie Langtry S.
over 14 furlongs at the start of the month, Shadwell=s high-class
mare is a fascinating newcomer to the stayers= scene. AI suppose
it was a big call keeping Enbihaar in training as a 5-year-old, but
she only just missed out on a Group 1 last year on Arc
weekend,@ trainer John Gosden said. AShe=s a big, powerful filly
who enjoys her training and her owner enjoys seeing her racing.
She=s already won a second Lillie Langtry and now we are trying
something a bit different by running her in a new division. Jim
[Crowley] got off her the other day and said that the extra two
furlongs wouldn=t be a problem.@ Crowley did have a warning,
however. AI think she=s a proper Group 1 mare when conditions
are right. It=s her first time stepping up to two miles, but I think
she=s crying out for it,@ he said. AThe only thing I would say is she
is probably a top-of-the-ground mare.@

Friday=s Preview cont.
Opposing is the June 18 G1 Gold Cup and July 28 G1
Goodwood Cup runner-up Nayef Road (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and
the July 5 G3 Henry II S. scorer Dashing Willoughby (GB)
(Nathaniel {Ire}). Mark Johnston said of the former, AHe would
deserve it if he wins, that=s for sure. He=s done absolutely
nothing wrong in all his races this season. Unfortunately for him,
he=s just come up against Stradivarius at Ascot and Goodwood--
that=s all you can say. I think I=ve been second to Stradivarius five
times now. Four of those have been in Group 1s, so he deserves
his turn.@
Shadwell could have another red-letter day on Friday, with the
impressive Salisbury novice winner Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire})
pitched in to the G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack S. Fourth
on debut behind the re-opposing Mohawk King (Ire) (Siyouni
{Fr}) at Ascot on July 25, the Owen Burrows-trained bay made a
mockery of his second start also over this six-furlong trip on Aug.
9 and his trainer holds him in high regard. AWe=re going in off
the back of two runs which is always preferable to just the one--
it can only help. He won very easily at Salisbury, but it should
still have sharpened him up mentally,@ he commented. AI=ve
seen we are favourite, but we finished behind Mohawk King at
Ascot and I=m sure he=ll have improved for his first run as
Richard [Hannon], a bit like ourselves, doesn=t tend to have his
fully wound up first time out. I=m hoping with getting that
second run in the experience will have done him good.@
DANDALLA TO SWERVE MORNY Dandalla (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}), the six-length winner of the
G3 Albany S. at Royal Ascot who followed up in the G2 Duchess
of Cambridge S. on July 10, will miss this weekend=s G1 Prix
Morny and wait for the G1 Cheveley Park S. on Sept. 26.
AIt=s a combination of reasons,@ said co-owner Nick Bradley.
AThe ground isn=t ideal, obviously, and she is actually lighter than
she was at Ascot. I think she=s just going through a growing
phase. Her work has been very good. It was eye-popping in
March/April time. We=re going to be a little bit patient and treat
her like a good horse. She=ll come back for the Cheveley Park.
That is still the plan.
AWe=re treating her with caution. She=s definitely getting there.
If we had another week maybe we would have gone.@
OCEAN STAR ADDED TO TATTS AUGUST Winning 2-year-old filly Ocean Star (Ire) (Adaay {Ire}) has been
added to the Tattersalls August Sale as a wildcard as lot 199A. A

MAX DYNAMITE RETIRED Former G1 Melbourne Cup runner-up Max Dynamite (Fr)
(Great Journey {Jpn}) has been retired from racing at 10 years of
age and after a career on both the flat and over jumps, his
trainer Willie Mullins tweeted on Thursday. Campaigned by
Susannah and Rich Ricci, Max Dynamite won five of 44 starts
and earned in excess of ,1-million. Stakes-placed at three, Max
Dynamite was at his best at five when he won the G2 Lonsdale
S. and finished second by a half-length in the Melbourne Cup.
He would go on to run third two years later in the >Race That
Stops A Nation= behind Rekindling (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}).
Max Dynamite=s last win came at Killarney last July. He was
pulled up during a Cork hurdle earlier this month.
Mullins tweeted, AMax Dynamite has been retired. The

TRADE SELECTIVE AT STORE SALE Tattersalls Ireland held its delayed one-day May Store Sale on
Thursday, with the firm=s Chief Executive Officer Matt Mitchell
describing trade as Aselective.@
"The original May Store Sale date was May 14 and in that short
of time to now, the impact of Covid-19 has been enormous,@ he
said. AIt is positive that we have been able to hold the sale and
to enable the market to function. Trade was selective with
buyers adapting a cautious approach.@
At the close of trade 99 of the 170 offerings (58%) had found
new homes, for an average of i12,310 (-31%) and a median of
i9,000 (-40%). The joint top lots were both 3-year-old stores:
lot 591, a son of Snow Sky bought by Moffatt and Harley Dunne,
and lot 526, a Spanish Moon gelding picked up by Hamish
Macauley and Ballycrystal Stables. Each cost i40,000.

Tested in the July 4 G1 Epsom Oaks, Gold Wand came up well
short of the required standard when seventh before running
second to Franconia (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the Listed Lyric Fillies=
S. over the Juddmonte International trip here on July 26.
Keen early tracking the leading trio on this first try at the mile-
and-a-half distance, the bay had plenty in reserve when thrust
on the front end with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and kept rolling
as Vivionn closed out of the pack. AI=ve liked her since she was a
2-year-old--we threw her in at the deep end in the Oaks, but
lack of experience and the track didn=t suit her,@ jockey Andrea
Atzeni explained. AShe ran well last time on fast ground which
she didn=t like. We weren=t sure about the trip today, but she
enjoyed it. It=s great for her owner, as he=s only young and he=ll
be watching in Bahrain. She=s big, she=ll only get better.@

The class act of this contest, last year=s G3 Bahrain Trophy and
Jockey Club Derby Invitational winner Spanish Mission was in his
element enjoying a relatively easy time of things following solid
efforts over two miles when second in the G3 Henry II S. at
Sandown July 5 and sixth in the July 28 G1 Goodwood Cup.
Content to sit behind the leading duo throughout the early
stages, Jamie Spencer asked the question turning for home and
after quickly seizing the advantage even had the luxury of
angling him to the centre of the track for his finishing surge. AHe
was entitled to do that on his previous form, but we were a little
bit concerned about the ground,@ his rider said of the bay, who
was having his first start for Andrew Balding having moved from
David Simcock. AHe loved the track and went round there like a
ballet dancer. He=d like it quicker, as he=s a beautiful mover but
this will do his confidence good.@
The listed-winning dam, whose first foal was the Listed Rose

HAPPY ROMANCE (IRE) (f, 2, Dandy Man {Ire}--Rugged Up {Ire},
by Marju {Ire}) earned a bumper payday in Newbury=s July 19
Weatherbys Super Sprint and occupied a midfield berth through
halfway in this first start beyond the five-furlong trip.
Rowed along to challenge passing the quarter-mile marker, the
4-1 second choice gained a narrow advantage entering the final
eighth and was ridden out to comfortably hold the late charge of
the slow-starting G2 Superlative S. and G2 Vintage S. runner-up
Devious Company (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}) by 1 1/4 lengths. AI
thought she answered a lot of questions there,@ said trainer
Richard Hannon. AShe got the trip, but I don=t think she loved the
ground and struggled early on. I thought she was going to run
horribly for a few strides, but in the end she got to the front
with relative ease. She is a very good filly and more than just a
flash-in-the-pan. Physically, she=s done very well and will get
seven furlongs. She=s progressively got better and better all year
and we=re lucky that all these 2-year-olds are here racing and
the owners are having a ball.@ Looking ahead to a plethora of
options, Hannon continued, AShe=s in a sales race at Doncaster,
but we=d love to get some black-type if we could at some stage.
We=ll be looking at the [G1] Cheveley Park and there are a
couple of five-furlong listed races. There=s also the six-furlong
[G3] Firth of Clyde [S. at Ayr]. That might be just the race for her
to get a bit of black-type and, next year, I=ll bet we=ll see her in
the [G3] Fred Darling at Newbury in April.@ The March-foaled

COOLMORE CALLS ONGLOBAL CONNECTIONS
by Bren O'Brien
In extraordinary times, Coolmore Australia called upon some
of the extraordinary talents of world racing to launch its virtual
stallion parade this week and the feedback to the concept has
been overwhelmingly positive.
With COVID-19 protocols making the traditional stallion
parade days impossible, Coolmore took to the digital format,
featuring not only its star-studded roster, but also two of the
world's leading trainers in Aidan O'Brien and Bob Baffert, the
world's leading jockey in Frankie Dettori, Australia's leading
trainer in Chris Waller as well as rarely sighted, Coolmore's John
Magnier.
The hour-long video, available on the Coolmore website as
well as through various social media platforms, is narrated by
long-time Coolmore bloodstock advisor James Bester, who
speaks to the world industry leaders about the prospects of
stallions such as US Triple Crown winners Justify (USA) and
American Pharoah (USA) as well as new additions Yes Yes Yes,
Calyx (GB) and Magna Grecia (Ire).
Coolmore Australia Principal Tom Magnier said the response
since the virtual stallion parade was released on Wednesday
evening had been extremely encouraging.
"The feedback on our first ever virtual parade has been
overwhelmingly positive from all corners of the globe. I have
received messages from clients and friends in Europe, Asia,
America and throughout Australia and New Zealand and they
were all incredibly complimentary," Magnier said. "We are very
proud of the amazing stallion roster that we have developed
here over many years and we really enjoyed putting this piece
together."
In times of crisis comes innovation and Magnier felt his team
had responded to the challenge of presenting their stallions
ahead of the new season in a brilliant manner.
"We have all been met with many challenges in recent times,
but the show must go on, and it has been wonderful to see the
Australian industry adapt and evolve in such times," he said.
"The sales went online with resounding success so we didn=t
hesitate in putting together a virtual stallion parade of the
highest quality to bring our stallions to the people in the comfort
of their own homes.
"We were delighted with the way it all came together. The
farm, the grounds and most importantly the stallions looked
amazing and it is a credit to all the staff at Coolmore for making
this possible."
While a physical stallion parade is usually limited to speaking
to the people actually on the ground at the time, Coolmore was
able utilise its global contacts to bring together some incredible
talent to launch its 16-strong roster for 2020.

HE COULD BE A NORTHERN DANCER
OR THE NEXT SUNDAY SILENCE.
HE COULD BE THE NEXT BIG THING.John Magnier on Justify
Calyx | Coolmore Stud
"The virtual parade format gives you the opportunity to
include so much more than a conventional stallion parade. To
hear the likes of John Magnier, Aidan O=Brien, Bob Baffert,
Frankie Dettori and Chris Waller give an insight into some of the
stars of our roster makes for great viewing," Magnier said.
John Magnier speaks of Justify It certainly provided a rare opportunity to hear from Coolmore
mastermind John Magnier, who spoke at length about Justify, a
stallion which his organisation has provided an unprecedented
level of support for in terms of the quality of mares acquired to
go to him around the world.
"It's so unusual to win a Triple Crown. People have to realise,
there has only been 13 of them ever and this fella is an
unbeaten Triple Crown winner. He could be a Northern Dancer
or the next Sunday Silence. He could be the next big thing," he
said. "He fulfills the good looks and the masculine type of horse
that you must have for a good stallion. Then he has the obvious
pedigree advantages through Scat Daddy and we think that will
work very well on the grass. There's proof of it, so we are not
trying to re-invent the wheel."
Coolmore has marketed Justify as a game-changer for the
global thoroughbred industry since it acquired breeding rights in
the son of Scat Daddy (USA). He has served two books at
Ashford Stud in Kentucky and one at Coolmore Australia's base
of Jerrys Plains in the Hunter Valley. He stands his second
season in Australia at $66,000 (inc GST) in 2020.
"It's an opportunity really for the serious breeders to avail of
him while he is there," John Magnier said. "For me, he's a no
brainer at this time and he has been a nap of all the stallions
that we have ever put to stud. He fulfils all the criteria that we
look for on an international basis, which is where we see that
game going."
The virtual stallion parade also featured an interview with
Justify's trainer Bob Baffert, who gave insight into how he had
developed into a champion racehorse.
"The first time I saw him and looked at the way he's bred, I
thought I wonder how far he'll go, because he was built like this
massive quarter horse. He was just incredible from the first time
I ever worked him," Baffert said. "That's one thing about the
great horses I have had, you see it right away. When people go
and see Justify, they call me and they can not believe when they
pull him out, the presence that he has."
Coolmore America Manager Dermot Ryan has had the
advantage of seeing Justify's first Northern Hemisphere foals
and provided a glowing assessment of the impression they had
made.
"They have lovely quality, they have great strength, correct
good bone, they are very uncomplicated and good movers. They
are very straightforward horses to be around. Like himself, you
imagine yourself to be in the presence of greatness when you
are around them," he said. "They have that big hip, rear end and
a good hind leg. They have that strength that drives them and
that's dominant in all of them, that rear end with the muscle
behind him."
Frankie recalls 'amazing' Calyx Dettori, one of the greatest jockeys of all time, was called
upon to provide his assessment of Calyx, the son of Kingman
(GB), who debuts at Coolmore Austraia this year $17,600 (inc
GST).
Dettori rode the John Gosden-trained colt in his Royal Ascot
victory in the G2 Coventry S. and in the G3 Pavilion S. the
following year.
"I was blown away by what he did at Newmarket and that was
just 10 days before Royal Ascot. He went straight from a maiden
into the deep end of the Coventry and we knew that he had lots
of talent," he said. "The turn of foot he showed was amazing
and looking at the form afterwards, beating a horse called
Advertise, who I rode since and managed to win Group 1s on at
two and three, the form was rock solid."

O'Brien hails the natural, Magna Grecia Aidan O'Brien, the world's leading trainer, who has had so
much success from his Ballydoyle operation, spoke about Magna
Grecia, the son of Invincible Spirit (Ire), who won the G1 Vertem
Futurity Trophy S. at two and the G1 2000 Guineas at three.
"I suppose he was one of those unusual horses. His shape and
his length and his scope and his body never changed much when
we trained him. He came in looking like that and as we trained
him he never lost much weight," he said. "He was a natural from
day one and found everything very easy to him."
Magna Grecia debuts in Australia at $22,000 (inc GST).
Waller says Yes Coolmore's other addition in 2020 is of course Yes Yes Yes, the
son of Rubick, who defeated some of the world's best sprinters
to win The Everest last year. His trainer Chris Waller provided
some insight into the level of talent Yes Yes Yes possessed.
"When you are talking about running in an Everest, you need
to display to the Everest slot holders that you are choosing the
right horse. You need to wait for as long as you can to make sure
that that horse is right," he said. "We had to be convinced that
we had the right horse to convince the slot holders that Yes Yes
Yes is the horse, not to just run in the race, but win the race. The
decision was made and the rest is history."
While that was to prove his final run, with Yes Yes Yes retired
to stud, where he will stand at $38,500 (inc GST), after suffering
an autumn setback, Waller believes he would have been the
benchmark Australian sprinter of the season.
"Based on Nature Strip's rating and how he became the
highest rated sprinter in the world this year, you would have
had to say that Yes Yes Yes, in beating him in The Everest would
have been a pretty good chance wherever he went around the
world," Waller said.
The stallion parade featuring detailed coverage of all 16 of
Coolmore Australia's roster and is available here.
