• MGS represent the largest visitor attraction sector – almost 25
million visitors, and £1 billion in value to the Scottish economy
• 158 independent museums including 7 regimentals, as well as
31 local authorities, 11 university museums and 3 national museums
• More than 265 Registered or Accredited Museums and Galleries
• 50%+ of workforce are volunteers demonstrating a passion
and commitment to their local heritage

Festival of Museums• Festival format has taken place since 2006 – rebranded in 2011• A total of 55 organisations took part in Festival of Museums 2012, covering a
total of 79 participating museums/galleries • The main reason museums gave for taking part in the Festival of Museums was
to reach new audiences • The results show that the Festival allows them to do this • There were 45,881 visitors to the participating museums that weekend Visitor demographics:• The majority of respondents were in the 55+ age group (36.7%), closely
followed by those in the 35-44 age group (19.6%) and those in the 45-54 age group (18.8%)
• For 36.4% of respondents, this was their first visit to that venue/museum – 2% had never been to a museum before
• 92.1% of respondents said that their Festival of Museums experience had inspired them to visit museums in the future
• 55% of event goers attended events in their local community Advocacy results:• The 2012 campaign resulted in 181 pieces of editorial coverage with total
opportunities to see of 40,027,074
