Painters, welders, muralists, and performers all create Reno’s art scene — a year-round exhibition as vivid and varied as the landscape it calls home. Inspired by the high desert expanse of the Great Basin to the east and the 10,000-foot peaks of the Sierra Nevada to the west, Reno’s art community is eclectic and energetic. It surprises with mind-bending Burning Man installations and avant-garde outdoor performance art. It astounds with world-renowned rotating exhibits at the Nevada Museum of Art. Reno’s vibrancy and natural landscape attract audacious artists and traditional masters, who showcase their work in galleries, museums, art schools and workspaces throughout the city. Take a tour of Reno to see the wealth of art the city offers.

Reno

Experience an antique automobile in its native habitat, or discover a new corner of the universe at one of Reno’s many museums. Other museums can captivate toddlers to octogenarians with exhibits on monster-sized prehistoric fish and the human body.

The Nevada Museum of Art is the oldest cultural institution in the state, and the only art museum in Nevada accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM). In addition to a thematic permanent collection—Altered Landscape Photography, Art of the Greater West, Contemporary Art, and Work Ethic—the four-story building on Liberty Street houses a museum school, a gourmet restaurant, and the internationally-acclaimed Center for Art + Environment. An impressive roster of national and international artists regularly rotate through the museum’s halls and galleries, including works by Ugo Rondinone, Maya Lin, Andy Warhol, Frida Kahlo, and Rembrandt.

Art inspired by Nevada’s landscape and history, works by local artists, and collections from artists all over the world appear in Reno’s art galleries. You can find these artistic caches at locations like the University of Nevada, Reno; City Hall; artist co-ops; and privately-owned collections.

Galleries Stremmel GalleryFounded in 1969, the award-winning building was designed by the Mark Mack architecture group, and the steel and interior design was led by Tutto Ferro. Specializing in contemporary American art, The Stremmel Gallery stands as a beacon in Reno’s MidTown District. The gallery displays paintings, drawings, and sculptures by mid-career and established American and European artists.

Dickerson RoadBetween the river and the rails lies an artistic wonderland. Travel west on Second Street, beyond Keystone Avenue, where the street winds and turns into Dickerson Road. Suddenly you’ll be immersed in Reno’s industrial arts district — a hidden oasis of water gardens, nature studies, warehouses and artist workspaces for sculpture, pottery, painting, and welding.

MidTown DistrictLocated in the heart of Reno, you’ll find many eclectic businesses re-purposing historic homes to create a commercial corridor in the MidTown District. Museums, galleries, boutiques, artisan eateries and friendly watering holes line the streets. The exterior walls of many buildings display art created by Reno’s talented muralists.

Riverwalk District The Riverwalk District follows the Truckee River and is the epicenter of Reno’s art scene. At the heart of the district is Wingfield Park, the host of many summer concerts and festivals. In July, the tree-lined greens host events nearly every day and night during the city’s month-long art celebration — Artown. But art isn’t confined to the park or the month of July. Throughout the year you’ll find murals on buildings and public art installations on the streets of the Riverwalk District. Even the bike racks get into the spirit with locally-crafted designs.

To further nurture Reno as a creative environment, many vacant industrial warehouses have been renovated to fit the needs of area artists. On Dickerson Road a triad of makerspaces offers a variety of workshops and mediums. Local artists create sculptures, paintings and more at Reno Art Works. At The Wedge Ceramics Studio pottery wheels spin with the creations of local ceramicists. Nearby, Infinity Forge lights up with the heat of creativity.

Visual Art Production Spaces The GeneratorA free community art space, The Generator, promotes three main ideas: “Work less. Build more. Play more.” The 34,000-square-foot workspace includes a full-service woodshop, metal working facility, 3D printers, and classes. This artist co-working space often hosts the creation of large-scale Burning Man projects like Embrace, which was featured on the playa in 2014.

An art scene as varied as Reno’s requires an equally diverse canvas. In the Biggest Little City, you’ll find prestigious and historic theaters, staples of the Reno arts for years. The Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts hosts local performances as well as Broadway shows performed by national touring companies. See emerging artists and edgy expression at the city’s smaller venues. Or, enjoy a summer performance or late night movie viewing under the stars at one of the area’s outdoor amphitheaters.

The Brüka Theatre aims to create and share the experience of innovative theater. One of Reno’s longest standing theaters and performance companies, Brüka’s varied seasons span classic, contemporary, musical, and original theatric performances, as well as programming geared toward children. You’ll spot the location at the corner of First and Virginia streets by the glowing windows lit by vibrant neon lights.

Reno’s favorite public sculpture is the enormous “Believe” located in City Plaza, at the corner of First and South Virginia Street. The sculpture spans 70 feet and is made of 4-foot-thick steel. Artists Jeff Schomberg and Laura Kimpton created the piece for Burning Man. The sculpture is one of 170 pieces of work collected by the city.

BelieveArt installations, sculptures, and murals punctuate Reno’s urban landscape. Take a leisurely public art tour on bike or foot through MidTown or downtown to find locally made art and pieces straight from Black Rock City. For a guided experience, ArtSpot Reno hosts a variety of art tours including the Playa Art Trail and the Midtown Mural Tour.

Northern Nevada’s art events encourage artistic exploration and social engagement. Friends and families gather to experience the arts in the spectacular high desert environment.

Reno embraces an entire month of art during July with Artown. With over 20 years of tradition, this art and culture festival offers more than 500 events, including music, dance, theater, visual arts, workshops, and art walks. In addition to celebrating local talent, the city-wide celebration draws artists from all over the world. Most of the events are free and are concentrated in downtown, while others occur throughout the city.

Experience the most famous playwright in history in an idyllic setting at the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. Held in July and August in an outdoor amphitheater in North Lake Tahoe, the festival’s season typically includes a classic Shakespearean play, a modern show or musical, and additional musical performances. Bring a picnic and a bottle of wine and enjoy one of Tahoe’s trademark sunsets while the plot thickens.

The Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival

Every year, thousands of people from around the world gather in Reno before embarking on a journey to the Black Rock Desert. On the Playa, located about 100 miles northeast of Reno, a temporary metropolis rises to embrace art, free expression, and individualism. Artists create a city of temporary sculptures that live only during the festival. Some have been rebuilt and purchased by the city for its public art collection.

I truly believe that arts and culture add vibrancy to cities and attract locals and visitors alike, driving foot traffic to our neighborhoods and stimulating the local economy. The City of Reno is committed to bringing more public art displays and encouraging and promoting arts programs and local artists to enhance our thriving arts and culture scene through collaboration between the city, artists, community organization, and the business community.
