INTRODUCTIONTechnology is the most prevalent used tool in Higher Institutions worldwide
It must be incorporated into learning and teaching
It changes almost everyday, which makes it difficult for people to adopt it.

INTRO. CONTINUES
Students are scared to make mistakes and to expose their shortcomings.
Fear and uncertainties have gripped the mind of students.
There is resistance to change
Scarcity of resources is another factor
6Prepared by M. Mafuna E-Learning Administrator QTN
INTRO. CONT…..
Computer background also causes resistance to change
Early signs of resistance such as gossip and testing must be detected and dealt with accordingly.

Awareness about LMS
1. Usefulness of the LMS
2. Attitude of the students towards LMS

The graph depicts the attitude of the students
Some students believe that their performance can be enhanced through LMS
Other students are not sure whether it can enhance their academic performance or not.

Challenges in adopting the new technology
•Computer background•Lack of resources•Fears and shortcomings•Resistance to change

Computer background59% students did not have computers in their:•High schools•Homes
They were never exposed to computers.
38% of students did have computers.

Percentage vs. responses
Prepared by M. Mafuna E-Learning Administrator QTN
15
• Students feel that there is lack of resources.
• The available e-learning centres are not enough.
According to the survey that is done:• 47% of the students say e-learning centres
are not enough.
LACK OF RESOURCES

Lack of resources cont…•27% of the students say e-learning centres are available and enough•13% are not sure
No Internet access after school hours.
No Internet access in their homes

Fears and shortcomings• They fear that they may not cope with this
new technology • Unknown fears• Fears of being incompetent• Fears of making mistakes• Though not many, some students do fear
that the new technology is here to expose them of their shortcomings

Fears and shortcomings
Study findings
Limited time–No 24/7 access to the Internet in
the e-learning centres–Do not have enough time to access
the E-learning centres during the day.

Cont….Resistance to change
Students’ mindset is still geared towards the traditional ways of doing things.
Factors are:• Fears of the unknown• Incompetence• Fears of being negatively exposed by the
new technology• To make mistakes
22Prepared by M. Mafuna E-Learning Administrator QTN
Recommendations
• Making use of available resources effectively
• Detect early signs of resistance such as:
gossip
testing (David Straker 2008)• Lecturers should motivate students to
make use of LMS by:
23Prepared by M. Mafuna E-Learning Administrator QTN
Cont….1. Uploading lecture material to
WiSeUp online
2. Providing and encouraging discussions on WiSeUp online
3. being capacitated to make use of all WiSeUp online features

Cont….• Any new technology or system must be:
1. well advertised/marketed- clearly define its benefits to the users
2. user friendly- easy to use
3. useful- usable and relevant.
• Fears are common and one needs to master his/her fears.
25Prepared by M. Mafuna E-Learning Administrator QTN
ConclusionStudents show a positive attitude and enthusiasm about the new technology.
The role of WSU in Support systems is acknowledged.
However, there are challenges like lack of computer background from WSU feeder schools.

26
Cont….Inadequacy of resources, fears and shortcomings, resistance to change, etc.
Internet access is limited as it cannot be accessed outside the premises of the Institution.
The role of lecturers can have a great impact on motivating students to make use of LMS
Prepared by M. Mafuna E-Learning Administrator QTN
27
Cont….Dealing with resistance before it surfaces can prevent a project from failing.
Well advertised/marketed, user friendly and useful LMS can change the attitude of students.
