    Moorestown resident marksmilestone. PAGE 10

    By MIKE MONOSTRAThe Sun

During an official visit toLehigh University on Dec. 6 and 7,Greg Gamble, a wide receiver forMoorestown High School football, decided he was going to committo the school.

After making his commitment,he had to wait nearly two monthsto sign his National Letter of In-tent.

Last Wednesday, National Sign-ing Day finally arrived, and Gam-ble’s long wait to lock in his com-mitment to Lehigh finally ended.

“The process was long andstressful, but honestly it’s adream come true,” Gamble said.“I get to play D-1 football.”

Gamble and three otherMoorestown student-athletes offi-cially announced their collegechoices during the winter signingday on Wednesday, Feb. 3. Gam-

ble, soccer goalie Carlie Blessing, bowler Andrew Cannuli and foot-ball kicker Ryan Loftus revealedthe colleges they would competefor beginning in the 2016-17school year before a small crowdof families and friends at theMoorestown Athletic Center.

Each athlete committed to dif-ferent schools at three levels of NCAA athletics. Blessing andGamble each signed their Nation-

al Letter of Intent on Wednesdayas they will compete for Division

I schools. Blessing will be playingsoccer at the University of Rich-mond, while Gamble made hiscommitment to play football atLehigh official. Cannuli will bowlat the Division II level for McK-endree University in Illinois, andLoftus will be kicking for Divi-sion III Gettysburg College’s foot-ball team.

Signing day is a formality formany student-athletes. Most

make verbal commitments to col-leges prior to signing day. Howev-

er, Division I student-athletesaren’t officially bound to a schooluntil they sign a letter of intent.Last Wednesday gave the athletesa sense of finality.

“I’m in a group chat with all of my soccer teammates who arealso signing today,” Blessing said.“So it’s kind of a ‘we’re done’ feel-ing.”

Blessing, a four-year varsitygoalie for the Quakers’ girls’ soc-

cer team, was excited to finallysign her NLI on Wednesday. She

said she visited more than 30schools over the past few yearsand said it was a relief to finallybe locked in to Richmond.

Each athlete was attracted totheir schools for different rea-sons, but all shared the same en-thusiasm about their futureschool.

“I really like the coaches andthe size of the school as well asthe girls,” Blessing said about

Richmond. “It’s just the team en-vironment – overall is very nice.”

“As soon as I visited, I felt rightat home,” Gamble said aboutLehigh. “I was going to take someother visits, but as soon as I gotdone from Lehigh, I knew I want-ed to go there. I loved the campus,I loved the coaches. It was a greatfit for me.”

Loftus has spent the last coupleseasons booting field goals and

extra points for Moorestown foot-ball. Unlike his football teammateGamble, Loftus is playing Divi-sion III football. Even though Di-vision III athletes do not sign Na-tional Letters of Intent, lastWednesday was still a very spe-cial day for Loftus.

“Just to be able to realize this isreality, this is actually happening,I’m officially going to college toplay football, it’s awesome,” Lof-

tus said.Loftus visited about six or

seven schools before deciding toattend Gettysburg. A number of factors attracted him to theschool.

“They’re a great academicschool,” he said. “Socially, itseemed like somewhere where Icould see myself fit in. I really gotalong with the coach and I reallyliked the program. It was an easychoice.”

All of the athletes still have afew months of high school left tocomplete before they can shifttheir focus to college. However,Gamble admits he can’t wait toget on the football field and com-pete for Lehigh.

events with this new service, butcan archive and share videos asteaching tools in the OLGCSchool. OLGC is one of the onlyCatholic churches in the area livestreaming at this time, accordingto Molz. She feels it will pay off inthe long run with the number of things the church can do and pro-

    vide for people through stream-ing.

Having video services allowsanyone to watch a church event. This includes those nearby withlimitations on getting to church, and those far away who can’tmake it to the event. The stream-ing service came in handy duringthe Jan. 24 blizzard, when peoplecouldn’t go to church, and 450

people were able to watch from

their homes.“The capability could be used

by those confined to their care fa-cilities, to remote family andfriends during weddings and fu-nerals, and now, without any ad-ditional effort, by hundreds of snow-bound parishioners,” Fa-ther Jim Grogan said.

Another benefit of the stream-ing service is for evangelization.People who are interested in find-ing a place to practice their faithcan watch, listen and see if they

would feel comfortable at OLGC.“If it helps bring people to us, it

makes a lot of sense to broadcastHis message to as many people aswe can,” Molz said.

Molz said teachers have al-ready started to use past broad-casts as tools during classes atOLGC School.

However, McElroy doesn’twant the streaming to replace

    people being present at the

church and its services, but tohelp in situations where peoplecannot attend.

“In our heart of hearts, ourfirst choice is for people to bepresent, gathered together.Streaming is not a replacementfor the physical presence inchurch; we want people to formconnections, relationships and acommunity,” McElroy said.

OLGC would like to be able tolive stream other events such asbus trips or things outside of the

church using other devices butwould need a volunteer to help itdo so.

The live streams can be foundat the OLGC website, www.olgc-nj.org. The streams and pastbroadcasts can be found on theleft, under the main photo on thewebsite. Streams and videos canbe watched on a computer as wellas other mobile devices.

There are some big shoes to fillon the Moorestown Business As-sociation Board. After sevenyears, Tom Sheckels is stepping

down to pursue other goals, butnot without leaving a positivemark on the organization towhich he devoted so much time. The MBA is grateful for thecountless hours of hard workthat Sheckels put in as a boardmember, treasurer and web mas-ter, and will continue to benefitfrom the many improvements hemade throughout his tenure.

Sheckels’ work for the MBAcame after serving as an environ-mental engineer for Naval Facili-

ties Engineering for 30 years. His job took him to U.S. Naval basesand facilities throughout theNortheast, determining environ-mental deficiencies and workingwith Navy personnel toward solu-tions for the problems he identi-fied. When the government initi-ated the Base Realignment andClosure process, Sheckels’ depart-ment was consolidated and he

had to make the hard decision in2005 to relocate his family to Vir-ginia, or remain in the areawhere his wife Lydia’s career was

flourishing. He chose to retirefrom his engineering position

and pursue his passion for pho-tography, but his commitment toimprove the world around himstayed intact. With the samebrand of dedication he brought tohis former job, he turned his eyeon Moorestown where he and hiswife chose to move in 1981 be-cause of its charm – particularlyhistoric Main Street.

After launching Sheckels Cre-ations Photography in 2006, he

joined the Moorestown BusinessAssociation and right away beganto volunteer for the group by lend-ing his technology skills to helpimprove and develop content forthe organization’s new website. He wanted to become more in-volved, and in 2007 he ran for andwas elected to the board of the or-ganization, embarking on aseven-year term of communityleadership.

For the last three years, Sheck-els served as board treasurer, andcontributed his expertise in up-

    grading and streamlining the or-

ganization’s accounting systems. He also became the MBA web-master, keeping it up-to-date,training other board members, involving social media and send-ing other forms of communica-tion. And there was one otherservice he performed for thegroup – whenever there was aneed for a high-quality photo-graph, Sheckels was indisputablythe best man for the job. His im-ages have been used on the orga-nization’s website and directo-

ries, and served to illustrate arti-cles about the MBA in magazinesand newspapers.

Sheckels decided to step downfrom the MBA board at the end of 2015 so he could spend more timeperfecting his photography, ahobby he has cultivated sincechildhood when he snapped pic-tures with his Brownie Instamat-ic and developed the film himself in his father’s darkroom. Aftercollege and a stint in the Navy, theadvent of digital photographyrekindled his interest in themedium and he began to serious-ly pursue this avocation, special-

    izing in panoramic shots. Dy-

namic photos of Moorestown, aswell as journeys to Antarctica,Africa, Alaska and other stun-ning locales around the world, arefeatured on his websitewww.sheckelscreations.com.

Although no longer on theboard, Sheckels remains a dedi-cated member of the MBA – andhas spent time helping new boardmembers transition into their po-sitions. At the year-end MBAluncheon in December, Associa-tion President Don Powell pre-

sented Sheckels with a plaquecommemorating his years of service.

“The MBA and I personallywill sincerely miss Tom's guid-ance and steady hand. As theMBA has grown, Tom has beeninstrumental in making neces-sary upgrades and changes butmore importantly providing astructure around which thatgrowth could evolve. His quiet, steady counsel has been wonder-

ful and will be sorely missed. Iwish him only the best and amgrateful for his friendship andservice to the MBA,” Powell said.

Everyone has his or her ups anddowns, but I’ve survived it all andI’ve had a very, very good life. Ican thank the Lord for that,”Macon said.

Macon was “officially” born onFeb. 6, 1915, in Tampa, Fla., toTaylor Stephens and Willie Mae

Hamilton Stephens. According toMacon, she was actually born in1914, but was part of a late censusand her birth certificate wasdated incorrectly as 1915, so shegoes by that date now.

When she was just a baby, herfamily moved to Philadelphia, where she lived for more than 40years. There, she grew up withfour siblings.

Macon was a federal employee, working first at the Frankford Ar-senal, followed by the UnitedStates Marine Corp. where she re-tired after 30 years. A trailblazerfor desegregation in the armedforces, Macon was one of sevenblack women to desegregate herformer place of employment afterExecutive Order 9981 was issuedby President Harry S. Truman toabolish racial discrimination inthe United States armed forces.

“Despite the discrimination,we made it through,” Macon said.

    Macon met her late husband

Eugene at the age of 17. They fellin love and, after World War I, gotmarried. They spent 50 happyyears together. During their mar-riage, Macon and her husbandadopted their son Charles whoblessed them with three grand-children and many great-grand-children.

“The loves of my life,” Maconsaid of her husband and son.

The Macons bought propertyin Moorestown 65 years ago. Dur-ing that time, Eugene built theirhome with his own hands. In 1965,the Macons moved toMoorestown, and she has beenliving in that house ever since.

    When Macon first moved in,

the family didn’t have utilities formore than a year, she said. Every-thing was much more underde-veloped back then, with open landand trees. She lived on one dirtroad in the area and the townthen had one traffic light.

“I’m forever grateful. I havebeautiful neighbors and dearfriends,” Macon said.

A large factor in helpingMacon to reach 101 has been herhealthy and active lifestyle. Since

she was young, she has been alover of fresh vegetables. That iswhat she continues to eat today, and doesn’t leave any leftovers. She also hardly eats meat, stick-ing to fish and occasionally chick-en in her soup.

Macon has travelled all overthe United States and Europe, most recently going to Californiain December. She also remains ac-tive by planting flowers in thespring, doing her own lawn in thesummer and using a leaf blowerin the fall. Macon doesn’t haveany trouble going up and downthe stairs; she is just is a littleslower than she used to be.

But what Macon attributedmost to her age and health wasGod and his blessings.

“I feel wonderful, I have noaches and no pains. I move slow, but that is, I suppose, so I don’t getin trouble,” she said with a laugh.

Macon lives with and is takencare of by her caregiver SoniaWilliamson. Alfreda said she doeseverything and truly is a blessing.

“(Alfreda)’s very active and in-dependent … By law, because she

is 101, they don’t want her to behere by herself,” Williamson said.

Last year, Macon had a surprisebirthday celebration for her 100thbirthday on Feb. 21. Despite asnowy day, she was surrounded bymore than 100 family members, friends and neighbors. Also in at-tendance were Moorestown’s for-mer Mayor Victoria Napolitanoand Macon’s niece, Sen. DonzellaJames from Georgia. Both gaveher a proclamation, and she wasalso named an honorary Georgiastate citizen. Also, for her 100thbirthday, Macon was invited tohave dinner with PresidentObama, but decided not to go.
