BRIGIT BAUMA/The SunOn Jan. 23, children listen and interact with librarian Jennifer Dunne as she pulls felt shapes out of a box, asking the 4- and 5-year-olds to identify the shapes before putting them all together to form a snowman. During this winter-themed story time at theMoorestown library, children listened to stories about snowmen and did a snowman craft.

At the Moorestown Board ofEducation meeting, the room wasfilled with parents, educators andcitizens who were there to hearabout the Partnership for Assess-ment of Readiness for Collegeand Careers test. There has beensome controversy over the test

since it was decided by the statethat this would be the new stan-dardized assessment for New Jer-sey, replacing the NJ ASK andHSPA.A presentation was made by

Carole Butler, director of curricu-lum and instruction, and KatD’Ambra, director of guidanceservices, on PARCC, explainingmany things about the test such

as what it is, the expectations andtesting schedule. However, the bigquestion of the night wasn’t onthe test itself, but was on what todo for students who refused totake the test, or opted out.New Jersey has a no-opt-out

policy for the test, but studentsare able to refuse to take it. How-ever, for students who choose thatoption, what is left for students todo, some parents fear, is nothingbut sit and stare.“We want them to be recog-

nized refusals from either the stu-dent or the parent and also pro-vide an appropriate alternativeeducational experience not with-in the testing center with theother students,” said JackFairchild, a parent and leader ofMoorestown’s “No More Com-mon Core” Facebook group, whospoke up at the meeting, voicingsome parents’ concerns. He feels the biggest issue is stu-

dents who refuse to test will bedisruptive to those who are tak-ing the test. He is requesting thatstudents be provided with an al-ternative placement and be al-lowed to read or do enrichmentwork.“It is miserable for any student

to sit in one place for a long peri-od of time and not be able to doanything,” Fairchild said.He and some other parents re-

quested the board provide a writ-ten response by Feb. 1 acknowl-edging refusals and what the poli-cy will be with students who haverefused.Superintendent Timothy Rehm

did not confirm nor deny that theschool would have a sit and starepolicy. He said they are still wait-ing for guidance from the state. However, he did assure parentsthat no child who requested a re-fusal would be put in an uncom-fortable situation.“I do assure you that no child

in Moorestown will feel uncom-fortable or feel in any way pun-ished. No child will ever feel thathe or she is being punished be-cause an adult decision was madeto refuse to test,” Rehm said.

t’s no secret that our governor,Chris Christie, is debating a runfor president of the United States

in 2016. While he hasn’t officially an-nounced whether he will throw his hatinto the ring, many believe he will doso within the next few months. In recent speeches, Christie’s focus

has been on bigger national issues.Last summer and fall, during electionseason, he traveled all over the coun-try and helped fellow Republicanscampaign for gubernatorial seats. This past weekend, he traveled to Iowafor a Republican summit. All signs point to Christie announc-

ing his candidacy for president. Butwould he make a good president?According to a poll released last

week, New Jersey voters don’t think

so. A Quinnipiac University poll foundthat 57 percent of registered voters inNew Jersey did not think Christiewould make a good president. Almostone-third of Republicans polled didn’tthink Christie would be a good presi-dent, along with 78 percent of Democ-rats and 59 percent of independents. In the same poll, 52 percent of Gar-

den State voters said they wouldchoose Democrat Hillary Clinton overChristie in a hypothetical election be-

tween the two. Christie has won two gubernatorial

elections in New Jersey by a widemargin – in a predominantly Demo-cratic state – but apparently ourstate’s voters don’t think he’d be goodfor the higher post. It’s not altogethersurprising, and not a death sentencefor a potential bid for president either. The last president from New Jersey,Woodrow Wilson, didn’t win his ownstate, after all. Maybe New Jersey voters just don’t

think Christie’s personality wouldwork well running our country. Ormaybe they don’t think his politicswould work on a global scale. Ormaybe they just want their governorto concentrate on New Jersey whilehe’s still in that post.

Fairchild also voiced his opin-ion against the PARCC test itself. He felt it was “too much” and “ex-

tremely expensive.” There are 10testing days for the PARCC, notcounting the preparation days. Also, not only would the statehave to pay for each individualchild to test, but to accommodatethe PARCC test, which is an on-line exam, the school had to dosome updating, accordingFairchild.“It’s 10 days of testing on a 180-

day school calendar year. That isa large percentage,” Fairchildsaid. However, not all parents were

opposed. Sandra Alberti, a moth-er and former administrator andsuperintendent who worked forthe Department of Education, was excited for her children totake the test. She felt the PARCC

test will be the first time to showhow well students are taught.“I believe strongly, profession-

ally, personally and as a mother, that this is the very first time thatI can’t wait to see the results ofmy daughters’ test because I be-lieve this will be the first timethey are being given an assess-ment that is actually worthy ofthe instructional time that we aretaking to plan it and to adminis-ter it,” Alberti said.Alberti also commended the

board for having this meeting andother presentations. She felt therewas a lot of misinformationabout the PARCC test. She saidshe appreciated the time the ad-ministration was taking to givetruthful information. The presentation given at the

board meeting will be put up onthe district website within thenext few weeks at www.mtps.com.To learn more about PARCC andto take a sample test, visitwww.parcconline.org.
