Introduction
Main manufacturers of planetary pan mixers with verticalaxles use the peripheral scraping blades fitted with tail tofacilitate the concrete discharge phase (Picture 1).
The tail of the peripheral scraping blade or, alternatively, afixed discharge blade independent from the peripheralscraping blade must be provided and designed by keepinginto consideration different factors.

a) To assure a fast and complete discharge of concrete,the tail of the peripheral scraper must be high enoughto drag concrete towards the discharge gate in thefastest possible way (Picture 2).
This solution allows a quite fast discharge, butcreates a concrete wave in front of the peripheralblade and to its tail and consequently the mixingaction of the blades is reduced. This occursespecially with concrete having slump 0-85 mm. withthe risk that the concrete inside the wave is notproperly mixed.
Besides, the concrete wave generates a higherpower consumption from the electrical motor and tofall into the motor power consumption, it is necessaryto modify the incidence angle of the mixing bladeswith a consequent reduction of their efficiency.

b) To obtain a rapid and homogeneous concrete mixing,a low and short scraping tail is more advisable(Picture 3): in this way the effect of the concrete waveas described at point a) is eliminated.
On one hand this type of solution guarantees a verygood result in concrete homogeneity, on the other itpenalizes the discharge phase increasing further thetime required for discharging all concrete present inthe mixer pan.

Close attention has been paid both to design andmanufacturing technology for these new pan mixers,as well as to the choice of raw materials andrationalization of production with the aim to assurethe maximum reliability and productivity even inheavy duty conditions.
This new system of mobile discharge blade (Picture4) assures several advantages if compared with thetraditional one that has been used up to today.
Now, with the mobile discharge blade that is loweredonly and exclusively during the discharge phase(Picture 5), the mixing action is entirely entrusted tothe mixing blades that, thanks to a constant level ofmaterial present inside the mixing pan, carry out theiraction in the best conditions by mixing from thebottom to the top continuously all components.
When the pan mixer is fitted with the mobile dischargeblade, the peripheral scraping blade has the only aim toclean the pan walls and to convey the peripheral materialtowards the mixing blades (Picture 6), avoiding theconcrete wave that would be generated by using thedischarge tail.
This solution foresees one peripheral scraping bladeonly, instead of two, with a consequent reduction inwear and tear both of the pan walls and of theexternal side of pan bottom.Last but not least, the mobile discharge blade permitsand guarantees a total concrete discharge in ashorter time if compared with the traditional panmixers.

OPERATION
The mobile discharge blade is hydraulically operated by means of a hydraulic cylinder placedinside the gearbox. In Picture 4 you can see the discharge blade during the mixing phase (position1 – up) and during the discharge phase (position 2 – down).
The hydraulic system permits a fast and smooth rise and descent of the discharge device arm.
A hydraulic valve is adjusted at a pressure that is sufficient to maintain the blade in a low positionin order to avoid damages caused by accidental impacts.
The discharge blade assures a complete discharge of concrete in a very short time, avoidingcomponents contamination when continuous changes of mix-design are required.The elimination of the concrete wave (created by the tail of the peripheral scraper) enables theelectrical motor to work with a lower power consumption with consequent energy saving.
The adoption of the mobile discharge blade, especially when the complete discharge of concretecontained in the mixing pan is necessary, allows a reduction of the discharge time of about 10secs. increasing in this way the plant hourly production and in case production is equal, this timesaving corresponds to energy saving and reduction in wear and tear of wear parts.

The following is a list of advantages comparing the Cleco/Eurostar Planetary Countercurrent Mixer to other pan type mixers: I. Mixing Star Technology.
Other pan mixers have what look like a “spider” with shovels that just go around in a trough pushing concrete. The Cleco/Eurostar mixer utilizes a modern mixing star technology that are rotating mixing satellites around the vertical mixer shaft (star rotates at 44 RPM’s). A. Intensive and efficient mixing action by the Cleco/Eurostar Mixer guarantees: 1. Superior granulate distribution 2. Optimum cement consistency B. Shorter mix time (30 seconds per cycle) after water addition; normally 30 to 50 percent less mixing time. C. A higher degree of concrete workability and consistency is maintained. II. Completely Open Mixing Pan Area. Cleco/Eurostar Planetary Countercurrent Mixers have a completely open mixing pan area. Other pan mixers have a center cylinder (housing motor and gear drive) restricting the mixing action. A. Cleco/Eurostar EPM mixers are far easier to maintain. Because maintenance points are very accessible and visible, plant personnel find it easier to perform maintenance work. B. Cleco/Eurostar mixer is engineered with the plant personnel in mind. Machine components are easily accessible and exchangeable, therefore, they will take better care of the equipment. Other mixers with the motor and gear drive under the mixer are just hard to get at. C. Concrete level is lower in an EPM Cleco/Eurostar mixer. This speeds mixing and reduces wear. D. Absence of the center cylinder in an HPGM mixer also facilitates the quick clean up time at the end of the day: Less surface area for concrete build up and less area to clean. Normal clean up time is fifteen minutes.
