a community center focusing on all kinds of health, located in midtown oklahoma city
--an area looking to reinforce a pedestrian lifestyle-- has a strong working relationship
with st. anthony’s hospital.
bamboo is a catalyst for sustainable design, used to filter sunlight, as a living wall, inte-
rior finishes, spatial partitions, and structural inspiration.
“well” has multiple meanings besides that of an overall goodness. the word is also an
interjection: a grammatical tool used to signify change is about to take place.
the midtown wellness center is a physical interpretation of an interjection:
views and paths create a sense of progression, foster individual improve -
ment, and promote community-wide change.
bamboo screens in the fitness areas provide private workout spaces for the
self-conscious, while larger open areas encourage social interaction. the north-
ern point of the site is occupied by a shaded outdoor lobby and waiting area that encour-
ages community interaction. the eastern triangle of the site features open courts, recycled
rubber porous paved overflow parking, and bamboo landscaping. a variety of outdoor
spaces within the building highlight an environmentally aware architecture.
