Our AGM will take place on 22nd April, 2018 at 3pm. Children welcome.
This year we will be looking for new members to join the committee and to fill the various main roles:
Chairperson
Treasurer
Secretary
Other roles include, bar management, entertain-ment, fundraising and maintenance.
We are also asking various regular users of the Club to have a representative on the committee .
Without a Committee, the Club is unable to run so your input and attendance is vital to enable us to keep this community building open and able to provide the village and surrounding area with events for everyone.
Finally you will note that our usual March AGM has been moved; this is due to unforeseen circumstances.
30th March - Easter Bingo, eyes down 7.30pm
31st March - Community Easter event and Disco, starting 6pm
7th April - Pool competition starting at 7pm, pop into club to sign up. Money raised going to charity.

Well done to Year 4s Jonathan and Caitlin who represented Merriott First School at the first ever Young Voices competition organised by the Rotary Club of Ilminster.
They both had to speak on the subject of Fair Trade to a hall packed full of local dignitaries, parents, other contestants and a panel of three judges. They did lots of research on the subject and had really interesting speeches on Fair Trade cotton and gold.
The next event like this is a poetry recital taking part at the Ilminster Literacy Festival in June. All children will start learning poems by heart and winners will be selected to go forward to the recital.
If you have experience of public speaking and would be willing to help coach children, please do get in touch with Mr Caswell, Deputy Headteacher.

The Trustees recently met for the Trust’s 3rd Annual General Meeting to receive and discuss reports of progress with village projects funded wholly or in part from the endowment left by the late Cathy Herriman.
Regular users of Shyner’s Lane will have noticed that the full width of the path-way has now been restored, enabling couples to walk together and for buggies to pass with ease once again. The Trust is hoping to find financial help from the Local Authorities for repairs to the sur-face to prevent a repeat encroachment of soil which has so limited the path in recent years. Our Trustee tasked with caring for the natural environment has been discussing ownership issues with local residents whose gardens back on to the lane so that work can begin to remove some invasive plants and shrubs and replant with more suitable species. We are grateful for any cooperation and are appreciative of the management being carried out by some of the nearby residents.
At the Village Hall, with the support of the Trust, stonemason, Geoff Gale, has repaired the damaged “stonework”
around the main entrance. This was no simple matter as Geoff had to mould and
insert new sections and replicate the reconstituted mix which was used in the building’s con-struction in 1924/5.
Since my last report in October 2017, the Trust has taken over responsibility for maintain-ing Broadway Garden. This attractive feature was planted and cared for by a volunteer team for many years but the task had become too onerous for the diminishing band of helpers. We were asked if the Trust would take it over and we were only too pleased to do so. Some local residents will remember that the garden is the site of two shops and five cottages, the final shop being demol-
ished in 1983 for road widening and to improve the junctions.
We have acquired two examples of Merriott’s alcoholic past – a container used by William Webber, who was a Merriott Wine & Spirit Merchant, and a large cider flagon from Merriott Brewery, now Vine House in Broadway. We also have acquired a copy of the first O/S map to include Merriott from the 1810 survey. What a small settlement it was in those days.
Work on reviewing and cataloguing the Merriott records held by Crewkerne Museum, mostly the lifetime collection of Queenie Dodge, is well on the way to completion. We are also trying to uncov-er the history behind two of Merriott’s notable developments, Moorlands House and Shyner’s Terrace and Shyner’s House (now Greystones). The social history connected with the builders, owners and occupiers is an unfolding study of the social history of prominent villagers. There is more to learn before we tell the stories in these pages.

The residents and staff at Moorlands Residential Home recently enjoyed a visit from “Star” the Therapy Horse, along with her owners Steve and April Kibby.
The therapy horses visit hospitals and care homes across the county to bring smiles to the patients and residents.
Whilst at Moorlands everyone was able to ask questions about the horse and the rest of her family and the work they do.
They also enjoyed making a big fuss of Star who was extremely well behaved!

MANOR FARM’s OWN!
The new season has started at Manor Farm,
Merriott. We are ploughing land,
planting seeds and readying ground for growing a
wide variety of seasonal vegetables. We are also
now able to supply additional veg as well as
continuing with our own fresh eggs, farm pressed cider, apple juice and
cottage style cut flowers. Our daffodils are looking particularly lovely at the moment.
As we now have our own ‘egg packing’ station, we can even supply bulk quantities of fresh
eggs too. If you want a variety of fresh produce,
please come and visit our small rural farm shop and
see for yourself.

I am the Group Scout Leader at Hinton St George Scout Group. Our base is the Tithe Barn in Merriott and we have three lively sections meeting on Thursday evenings; Beavers 5-6pm, Cubs 6-7.30pm and Scouts 7.30-9pm. We run a varied programme of indoor/outdoor activities and
camps and have a great deal of enthusiasm for introducing our young people to new experiences and skills.
This term, for example, we've visited Crewkerne Fire Station, tried Karate, and practised our Archery skills. However, we have recently lost our Scout Leader, who has retired after many years in Scouting and are desperately in need of adult volunteers to help us support the Scout Group.
Anyone interested in helping, or with a child who may want to try a session, should contact Deb Cummings at [email protected] or on 07966 047953. Deb Cummings, Group Scout Leader

The winter months are generally a quiet time with regard to maintenance. It is difficult to do much when the footpaths are so muddy.
But now that spring is just around the corner we will be turning our attention to repairs and renovation during the spring and summer months. Indeed, as this copy of the Messenger goes to print, we will be working on paths with some drainage issues (see photos). Also, following an alert from a Merriott resident, we have been dealing with a 'sink hole' on a popular footpath in conjunction with the county rights of way team.
Those of you who use Shyners Terrace will have seen a great improvement there. Our thanks go to the Merriott Heritage Trust who have undertaken responsibility for the maintenance of this path. More improve-ments are planned for the future with the planting of more appropriate shrubs.
Finally, I am pleased to welcome Miriam and Steve as new members to our group of vol-unteers. They have a lot to offer and we look forward to their contribution to the group.

Our spring flowers are eagerly awaited; snowdrops and crocus are soon joined by daffodils, narcissus, hyacinths and prim-roses. Many of these garden favourites are woodland plants evolved to flower before the tree canopy above has fully grown. This makes them easy to incorporate in our gardens, under shrubs in a border, or around a tree in the lawn.
These small gems are soon followed by some beautiful garden flowers. Brunnera is a tough plant that has masses of dainty Forget-me-not like flowers and looks lovely with Tulips, Dicentra or Bleeding Heart giving some height with it’s arching stems of pendant heart-shaped pink or white flowers. Self sown Aquilegia or Granny’s Bonnets mingle with Lady’s Mantle (Alchemilla Mollis) to soften and tie it all together.

After leaving London for the English countryside, writer A.A. Milne starts to spin fanciful yarns about his son's growing collection of stuffed animals. These stories form the basis for "Winnie-the-Pooh".
We follow the adventures of A. A. Milne, his wife Daphne and their son Christopher Robin, the success of the books and how this impacts on their lives. Meanwhile the enchanting tales bring hope and comfort to the rest of post-war WW1 England still struggling with the aftermath of the conflict.

Addressing the stigma of mental illness in the church
One in four people in church are affected by mental illness every year, a staggering figure which needs to be addressed. Happily, help is at hand and this simple book is an excellent guide, illustrated with several heartfelt personal stories. It sheds light on the reality of mental illness - not to condemn people, leaders or churches but to offer education, insight and practical advice on how to tackle this challenging problem. It looks at various mental health issues and how they affect everyone involved, topped off with real life stories which will resonant with everyone affected. Importantly, it also suggests how the church can create a supportive environment.

This group was started over 50 years ago by Pamela Golledge, the vicars wife. It was then the Young Wives Group. In those days, most young mums stayed at home or did seasonal fruit and potato picking, or home glove mak-ing, so it was an important part of social contact for them. Over the years quite e few of us have continued to meet and having long grown out of the original title, the name was changed to the Merriott Open Group. We meet twice a month in each other's houses and have a mixture of serious speakers fun events and coffee evenings . We are very sup-portive of each other and always welcome new members. We pay an annual £10 fee and either £1 for a coffee evening or £3 if we have a speaker, which can be either a fee or a donation to their chosen charity.

M e r r i o t t i n t h e s n o w We’ve received a number of photos of scenes around our beautiful village when the snow fell a few weeks ago. Many thanks to Paula Bateman and Liz Fisk.
During the Winter we have had a number of complaints of an increase in dog fouling around the village. It seems that the few irresponsible owners take advantage of the longer hours of darkness. The Parish Council is working with the South Somerset Dog Warden to identify the offend-ers who will receive £80 penalties.
One such owner has been identi-fied on camera and will shortly receive a penalty.
We remind residents that the whole Recreation Field is covered by CCTV, and that dogs are not permitted there at all. There are also a number of private camera systems around the village.
Please contact the Dog Warden or Parish Clerk if you are aware of any offenders.
To assist dog walkers, we are installing two more waste bins, one in Lower Street at the bottom of Manor Drive, and one on the footpath entering Scotts Nurse-ries land opposite Church Street.
There has also been an increasing incidence of vandalism on the Recreation Field, again recorded on camera and the Police are taking action against the offenders involved.
Turning to positive things, the play area on the Recreation Field is about to be improved with the addition of ten new items, provid-ing activity opportunities for all ages.
It should be ready for use in a month or so, depending on the weather.
