EX PRODUCTS
With this catalogue, Tramontina is proud to introduce
its newest business line: solutions for installations
in explosive atmospheres and non-classified
industrial areas, which are sold under the
Tramontina Ex label.
Tramontina is responsible for all stages of production
of Ex products: the planning, manufacturing, assembly
and delivery of products ready for installation. Control
and approval - both under the company’s Engineering
Department - are essential for meeting the technical
requirements of these stages of production.
Division Ex products combine safety, design,
outstanding finish, high quality and the technological
excellence of TRAMONTINA Eletrik S.A., - the industrial
unit of the group specialized in the manufacture of high
and low voltage electrical products.
Notable items from the Division Ex family of
products - products for explosive atmospheres:
• Conduit outlets and junction boxes CAEx and control
stations CPEx are injected with copper-free aluminum
and have excellent coating.
• Conduit outlets and junction boxes CBEx are flexible
for the positioning of threaded entries and mounting
the terminals.
• Control panels CCEx make it easy to attend to
demand as the Certification of these products permit
assembling different electrical and electronic equipment.
• Pilot and control stations ACEx are made of stainless
steel for greater mechanical and corrosion resistance.
• Plugs BUEx are noteworthy as they can be produced
in stainless steel, copper-free aluminum, naval brass or
galvanized steel.
• Plug and Outlets DXN, with Ex de protection, have
excellent mechanical and electrical resistance, with the
parts easily assembled as needed.
THE COMPANY
At its ten factories, Tramontina produces 18,000
different items. These items include cookware,
tableware, knives, stainless steel household utensils,
cooktops, range hoods, sinks and containers, electrical
material for household and industrial use, tables
and chairs in wood and plastic, as well as tools for
agriculture, construction and gardening, and highly-
specialized manual tools. To successfully distribute its
products, Tramontina invests in production, logistics and
marketing technology, which enables the company’s
label to be present in over 120 countries.
Tramontina also values social responsibility and
respect for the environment because it believes that
caring for our planet is a way of ensuring a good quality
of life for everyone.
More important than the fact that Tramontina’s
“capital” is Brazilian, is the importance of its human
capital. That is why Tramontina counts on the
professional and personal growth of its team, totaling
6 thousand employees.
However, a company can accomplish all of the above
only with the support of its partners. For this reason,
a primary objective is to focus on our clients and
customers. Tramontina has always been recognized
for its high quality. Always respectful and well-
respected. Always trusting and trustworthy. This is the
type of relationship that Tramontina believes in.

EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERES
1. BASIC PROPERTIES OF FLAMMABLE SUBSTANCES
To study the classification of areas it is fundamental to
learn about the four properties of flammable substances
[gas, vapor, liquid or combustible dust]:
• Relative Density
The density of a gas or a vapor relative to the density
of air. Gas or vapor with relative density less than
1 [lighter] rises. Gas or vapor with relative density
greater than 1 [heavier] falls.
• Flash Point
The minimum temperature at which a liquid gives off
sufficient vapor to form an ignitable mixture.
• Ignition temperature
The lowest temperature at which a flammable
substance will spontaneously ignite in a normal
atmosphere without an external source of ignition.
• Flammable Limits
Also called Explosive Limits.
Lower Explosive Limit [LEL]: low concentration of
flammable substance and / or too much oxygen
[lean mixture].
Upper Explosive Limit [UEL]: high concentration of
flammable substance and / or low oxygen [rich mixture].
The range between these two limits is known as
Flammable Range: the explosive atmosphere can only
occur between these limits.
2. EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERE
An explosive atmosphere occurs when the mixture of
oxygen [air] with flammable substances is such that an
ignition source [spark, electrical spark or hot surface]
can cause an explosion. The explosion will only occur
with these three elements in the proper proportions.

3. HAZARDOUS AREAS
Hazardous areas are places where there is a possibility
of formation of explosive atmospheres due to the
presence of flammable substances.
4. HAZARDOUS AREA CLASSIFICATION
The classification of hazardous areas is a study that has
the purpose of identifying the areas where there is the
possibility of a potentially explosive atmosphere to form,
evaluating the properties of the flammable substances,
equipment features, ventilation and temperature of the
environment, among others.
4.1 Zone Classification
The concept of Zone Classification refers to the
frequency and duration of the presence of an explosive
atmosphere in the area.
a] Areas with the presence of Gas or Vapor
Zone 0: area in which an explosive atmosphere is
present continuously or for long periods or frequently.
Zone 1: area in which an explosive atmosphere is likely
to occur during normal operation.
Zone 2: area in which an explosive atmosphere is not
likely to occur during normal operation, but if it does
occur, it will persist for a short period only.
b] Areas with the presence of Combustible
Fuel
Zone 20: an area in which an explosive atmosphere is
present continuously or for long periods or frequently.
Zone 21: area in which an explosive atmosphere is likely
to occur during normal operation.
Zone 22: area in which an explosive atmosphere is not
likely to occur during normal operation, but if it does
occur, it will persist for a short period only.
Typically, the industry considers the following durations of
flammable substances emissions:
Zones 2 and 22: 0 to 10 hours/year.
Zones 1 and 21: 10 to 1.000 hours/year.
Zones 0 and 20: above 1.000 hours/year.
Note: The year has 8760 hours.
4.2 Group Classification
A system of classifying equipment according to its use.
Equipment for explosive atmospheres is divided into
three groups:
Group I: Equipment intended for use in the Mining
Industry
Group II: Equipment intended for use in places with
potentially explosive atmospheres of gas or vapor
[surface industries]. Group II is subdivided into three
groups according to the characteristics of gases:
IIA: represents Propane.
IIB: represents Ethylene.
IIC: represents Hydrogen and Acetylene.
IIA equipment is only used for IIA areas. IIB equipment
can be used for both IIA and IIB areas. Equipment
marked IIC or II can be used for IIA, IIB and IIC areas.
Group III: Equipment intended for use in places with
an explosive dust atmosphere. Group III is subdivided
into three groups according to the characteristics of
combustible dust:
IIIA: combustible fibers.
IIIB: non-conductive dusts.
IIIC: conductive dusts.
IIIA equipment can only be used for IIIA areas. IIIB
equipment can be used for both IIIA and IIIB areas.
Equipment marked IIIC or III can be used for IIIA, IIIB
and IIIC areas.

surface of an electrical device can reach under normal

substances.

10. DEGREE OF PROTECTION
It is the level of protection defined by an enclosure
against access to hazardous parts, against ingress of
solid foreign objects and / or water.
The NBR IEC 60529 standard describes the classification
of degrees of protection provided by housing for
electrical equipment with rated voltages not exceeding
72.5 kV.
Designation to indicate the degree of protection consists
of the letters “IP” followed by two digits [characteristic
numerals] that indicate compliance with the conditions
in the table below:
• The first numeral indicates the degree of
protection provided by enclosures in relation to people
and the equipment inside, representing the level of
protection against ingress of solid foreign objects.
• The second numeral indicates protection of
equipment against harmful ingress of water.
