THE TEACHING OF RADIUM THERAPY.

THE MOUNT VERNON AND RADIUM INSTITUTE.

THE Radium Commission announces that facilitiesfor post-graduate teaching in radium therapy will beprovided at the Radium Institute and the MountVernon Hospital (Northwood), which institutions arebeing reorganised as a joint teaching centre, styledthe " Mount Vernon and Radium Institute," under asingle control so far as medical services, teaching,.and research are concerned. In all other respects thetwo institutions will retain their separate identities.

Allocation of Radium.-So far 17 grammes (out of apossible total of about 22) have been ordered andprovisionally allocated by the Commission. Ninegrammes have already been received from themanufacturers, and 6 of these have been delivered,to centres in England, Scotland, and Wales.

National Radium Centres.-In accordance with thepolicy of concentrating national radium at a limitednumber of centres with medical schools attached,12 " national radium centres " have been nominated.Of these, Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, andAberdeen have already been supplied with radium ;Manchester, Glasgow, and Newcastle will receive asupply almost immediately ; while the agreementswith Bristol, Dundee, Leeds, Liverpool, and Sheffieldhave yet to be signed. Plants for the preparationof radon (radium emanation) are being set up in somecentres. In London two centres are being organisedto carry out special work : (1) the Mount Vernon andRadium Institute, mentioned above; and (2) theWestminster Hospital, which is experimenting witha " bomb " (containing 4 g.) in order to determinethe value of mass irradiation and long distance radiumtherapy.Radium National Forms.-A set of " radium national

forms " for the use of recognised centres have beenprepared in order that the clinical records of allcases treated may be kept on a uniform basis andeventually incorporated in general national statistics.It is hoped that these may eventually be adoptedby other institutions practising radium therapy.Specimen copies may be obtained on application tothe Secretary of the Commission at 5, Adelphi-terrace, London, W.C. 2.
