MIKE MONOSTRA/The SunEven though much less snow fell than forecasted, residents took advantage of the winter weatheraround the township on Tuesday, Jan. 27. Anderson Cerra wears a serious expression as he concen-trates on sliding down the hill at Tomlinson Park in his snow saucer. For more photos, please seepage 12. See a story about the safety of sledding at Tomlinson Park to the left.

    Ready, set, sled!

    By MIKE MONOSTRAThe Sun

Its a common sight to see whensnow falls in Medford.

Kids of all ages carry theirsleds to Tomlinson Park acrossfrom the Pinelands Branch Li-brary, where a small hill swoopsdownward toward RancocasCreek. The hill is one of the mostpopular sledding spots in Med-ford.

Some residents also consider itone of the most dangerous sled-

ding spots in Medford.Resident Mike Panarella spokeat the Medford Township councilmeeting on Jan. 20 expressingconcern about the safety of kidswho sled at Tomlinson Park. Hewanted to make council aware of how many kids are putting them-selves in harms way at the site.

    Councilman Brad Denn agrees

    By MIKE MONOSTRAThe Sun

Last weeks snowfall in Med-ford was likely the final storm of the pre-brine era in the township.

The townships neighborhoodservices department is just a cou-ple steps away from having theability to treat Medfords roadswith brine, a water and salt mix-ture designed to keep snow fromfreezing to the roadways.

Brine is placed on the road upto 72 hours prior to a storm andacts as a layer between snow andthe pavement. Brine keeps thesnow from sticking to the pave-ment and allows plows to push

the snow off the road more easily. The brine system was pur-chased last winter to improvesnow removal efforts on townshiproads.

I went there once and I would-nt go back again, Denn said.Theres trees and other stuff at

the bottom. The other issue is kids walkingin the area. The park is locatednear the intersection of Allen Av-enue and Main Street. Betweenthe heavy traffic moving alongMain Street and cars constantlycoming and going near the li-brary, it presents a potentiallydangerous situation for pedestri-ans.

Despite the danger, theresnothing the township can do toprevent kids from sledding downthe hill.

Its public property, so anyonecan go there, Denn said.

    Panarellas plea to council was

to look at possibly constructing asledding hill somewhere else inthe township.

Its not that hard to put togeth-er a sledding hill, Panarella said.Almost all of our surroundingtowns have it.

Denn agrees a sledding hill isnecessary for the kids to have asafe place to have fun in the snow.Following last weeks snow, Denntook his own kids sledding, butsaid the only safe places to go arevarious small hills. Those smallhills dont amount to a lot of fun, especially for older kids.

We definitely need one in thetown, Denn said. Its just aquestion of how you do it andhow can you afford it.

Those two questions presentlarge obstacles to putting a sled-ding hill in. Denn said it would betough for the township to findspace in the budget to pay forsuch a project.

The actual planning of theproject would also take sometime.

Wed have to look at differentengineering ideas, Denn said. Itdefinitely needs to be put some-where where there is a parkinglot. You cant have cars parked

next to plowed streets.Despite the many challenges

constructing a sledding hill couldbring, Panarella feels it could be agreat gesture for the township tomake.

I was hoping this group wouldbe known to do something for thekids before they leave, he said.

Denn said construction of asledding hill will not happen inthe foreseeable future. He realizeskids from around the township

will continue to flock to Tomlin-son Park to fill their sleddingneeds. His hope is kids stay safeand look for other locations tohave fun in the snow.

    ary.Interim township manager

Katherine Burger said the town-ship was scheduled to have thebrine spreading equipment in-stalled on the trucks during the

week of Jan. 26, but was unable tocomplete the work since thetrucks were needed for lastweeks snow.

We had to bring it back so wehad to use it for the storm lastweek, Burger said. Were stilllooking to get the equipment in-stalled on the trucks. Were tryingagain for next week.

    Barring another snowstorm in

the next two weeks, installationon the brine spreading equip-ment should be completed on thetownships trucks. The next stepis training personnel on how touse the equipment.

The brine will be used as acomplement to salt, which Burgersaid will still be used in additionto brine.

It should (reduce) how muchsalt were using, she said.

When the equipment was firstpurchased, Schultz said the town-ship could change the method bywhich it treats the roads. He dis-cussed possibly treating sidestreets and residential develop-ments with brine first rather thanthe main roads, since sidestreets are the last to getplowed.

    However, Burger said the town-

ship would not go through withthis change, saying the crews willcontinue to make the main roadstheir first priority.

You always have to do that,Burger said. The whole idea isthat well brine the main roadsfirst.

Prior to future storms, town-ship crews will attempt to brineas much of the town as possible. How many of the towns roads re-

ceive brine will depend on a num-ber of factors, such as the amountof time the town has to prepareand how much brine and saltcrews have.

When a storm is imminent,Medford employs all its neighbor-hood services resources to pre-treating the roads. This samecommitment will remain whenbrine is introduced.
