Cuarto Domingo de Cuaresma Fourth Sunday of Lent

The main concern of this Fourth Sunday of Lent, Laetare Sunday, is the baptism of the new Christians at the Easter Vigil and the church wide renewal at the Baptismal Font of the baptismal promises of the already baptized. Laetare is the Latin word for “rejoice” and we are to have a sense of joy on this as we are getting closer and closer to the great feast of Easter. The readings provide a pow-erful reminder of the meaning of baptism and our battle against the forces of evil in the world. The readings are a powerful reminder of the meaning of baptism and of our battle against the forces of evil in the world. The gospel reading is the story of how a blind man’s encounter with Jesus changed his whole life. On that occasion Jesus anointed the blind man on the eyes with clay (a mixture of water and dirt), and told him to wash the clay from his eyes and when he had done so, he passes from blindness to sight, from unbelief to belief. The story uses the imagery of blindness to signify spiritual resistance to the presence of God and sight to signify spiritual openness to truth. To be united with Christ in baptism is to see the world as it is, a place where the darkness of evil and sin is active but where the light of Christ’s Lordship reigns (Jn 9: 1-41). We, too, have had an encounter with Jesus in water, the water of the Sacrament of Baptism. Few of us probably have any recollection of it, since most of us were baptized as infants. But whether we remember it or not, the baptismal water made us pass from the blindness of sin to the light of faith in Jesus Christ. That is why we sign ourselves with Holy Water upon entering and exiting the church; to remind us of our baptism and claim its power once again. To claim the name Christian, we cannot be blind to the evil around us. As Catholics we have a moral obligation to speak out and take a stand against the social sins of the day. We don’t have to look too far for examples of how human life is being degraded and tromped upon; the evil of abortion, the hostility to immigrants, and hate crimes against people who are different and feed the “culture of violence” in our society. If we turn a blind eye to these social sins we are like the Pharisees of the gospel story who sees only what they want to see. They imagine themselves to be the only ones who know God’s truth (sound familiar?), their big sin is idolatry: they presume to know the mind, heart, and will of God better than God! They are spiritually blind to the possibility that God can act even through a simple blind beggar. So, too, you and I have been chosen to give witness to the love of Christ in the world today. Gathered around the Lord’s Table at Mass we have an opportunity to let the embers of faith be fired up so as to give a burning witness to the faith we profess. Most certainly we must at the very least renew our promises to live the life to which we have been called, as St. Paul says “…to live as children of the light…for light produces every kind of goodness, justice, and truth” (Ephesians 5:9).

Father Bill

A Sacristan's role is to see that everything is in readiness to ensure that the liturgy is both prayerful and orderly without unnecessary distrac-tion. Below is a basic listing of the more common duties during mass: • Arrive 30 minutes before mass begins. • Greet the priest so he knows who is on duty, and if there is a visit-ing priest, offer help or answer any questions he may have. • Ensure the lights are turned up to full level by 15 minutes before mass begins. • If incense is required for a particular mass, the Sacristan should have the charcoals burning by 15 minutes before mass. • Select gift bearers for the mass and explain when they are to meet you in the foyer for line up and what is expected of them. Many times we use young children so a walk through is also an option before mass. Re-explain the basics again as you line them up and hand them the gifts, and finally, instruct them to begin when the priest is ready. • Ensure the candles are lit (altar servers are to light the candles). • Be alert and flexible both before and during mass in case anything arises that needs your assistance. • Ensure the candles are snuffed out after mass (altar servers are to put out the candles). • Dim the lights down a level immediately after mass, then dim one level further before leaving (the lights are shut off completely by others after the last mass of the day). • If you're interested, please contact Wendy Nugent at [email protected] and we can start training immediately!
