Therewasmagicinthesecretgardenthatspringandsummer.Atfirsteverythingturnedgreen.Thenthegreenchangedtocolours–blue,purpleandred.Therewereflowerseverywhere.DickonandMary’sseedsgrewandproducedpoppies•.Andtheroses–theroses!Fromsmallbudstheygrewintolargeflowersandfilledtheairwiththeirperfume.Colinsawitall.Hewatchedthechangesastheyhappened.Dickonpushedhiswheelchairtothegardeneverymorningandhespentthedaythere.Sometimeshesatonthegrasswatchingthe insects.Onemorninghewatchedamole•diggingahole.He learnt a lot of things about theways of these insects andanimals.AndDickontaughthimabouttheanimalsinthewood.

Onemorningthechildrenwereinthesecretgardenasusual.WhenBenWeatherstaffarrived,Colinsaid:‘Goodmorning,BenWeatherstaff. IwantyouandDickonandMaryto listentomebecauseI’mgoingtotellyousomethingveryimportant.’

‘Yes,sir!’saidBenWeatherstaff.Theysatdowninacircle.Thecrow,thefox,thesquirrelsand

thelambwereverycurious.‘Nowlet’sbegin,’Colinsaid,andtheyallstartedchanting•.‘Magicisinme.Magicisinme.Magicisinallofus.’

ThenColinstoodupandwalkedroundthegarden.Hewentin frontwithDickon on one side andMary on the other.BenWeatherstaffwalkedbehind.

Colin walked a bit then rested. Then he walked again andrestedagain.AtfirstheheldDickon’sarmthenhewalkedafewstepsalone.

‘Icanwalk!Themagicworked!’hecried.‘Whatisthedoctorgoingtosay?’askedMary.‘Nothing,’ Colin answered, ‘because we aren’t going to tell

him.No-onemustknowthatIcanwalkandrun.It’sasurpriseformyfatherwhenhecomesbacktoMisselthwaite.’

‘He’sgoingtothinkit’sadream,’saidMary.

nextdayhemadeadecision.‘I’mgoingtogobacktoMisselthwaite.’WhenMrCravenarrivedhome,heaskedMrsMedlocktocome

tothelibrary.Hewantedtospeaktoher.‘HowisMasterColin,Medlock?’heasked.‘Well,sir,’MrsMedlockanswered.‘Hesuddenlywantedtogo

outinthegardeneverydaywithMary.NowDickonpusheshiswheelchairandhestaystherealldaylong.’

MrCravenlookedshocked.‘Inthegarden!’hesaid.
