By telephone
Bids submitted by telephone must
be confirmed in writing.
Telephone bidding
If you are unable to attend the sale
we can normally arrange for you to
bid on the telephone. This service is
available entirely at our discretion
and at the bidder’s risk. All
telephone bids must be confirmed in
writing, listing the relevant lots and
appropriate number to be called. We
recommend that a covering bid is
also left in the event that we are
unable to make the call. We cannot
guarantee that lines will be
available, or that we will be able to
call you on the day, but will
endeavour to undertake such bids to
the best of our abilities.
Methods of Payment
Goods purchased will not be
released until we have received full
payment.
Cash
Cash payments can be made at the
accounts desk during or after a sale.
Cheque
Cheques should be made payable to
Lyon and Turnbull Ltd. We reserve
the right to wait until cheques have
been cleared by our bankers before
releasing bought goods. Cheques
can be cleared prior to sale on
request. Cheques drawn by third
parties cannot be accepted. If paying
by post please include the slip from
your invoice.
Switch or Credit Cards
Payment can be made by Switch,
Mastercard or Visa cards. There is a
surcharge on credit card payments.
Collection
It is the buyer’s responsibility to
ascertain collection procedures,
particularly if the sale is not being
held at our main saleroom.
Electrical Goods
Lots that were once operated by
mains electricity are bought entirely
at the buyer’s risk. They are offered
for sale for display or historical
purposes and may not comply with
current regulations.
Bidding
At the Sale
To bid at the sale all potential
buyers must be registered with us
on or before the day of sale. We will
need proof of identification and
residence, and may require a bank
reference. Potential buyers must
collect a bidding number before the
sale begins, and show that number
if successful in purchasing a lot.
Please ensure that the auctioneer
repeats the number correctly when
confirming the sale. If there is any
doubt at this stage as to the
hammer price or buyer it must be
brought to the auctioneer’s attention
immediately. All lots will be invoiced
to the name and address given on
your registration form, which is non-
transferable. If you have purchased
a lot you may take your bidding
number to the accounts department
and receive an invoice immediately.
If you have not been successful
please leave the number at the
Registration or Reception desks.
In writing
Bid forms are available at the sale
and at the back of the catalogue.
These should be submitted in
person, by post, or by fax as soon as
possible prior to the sale and we will
bid on your behalf up to the limit
indicated. In the event of receiving
two identical bids the first one
received will take precedence. They
must be received at the very latest
at least an hour before the sale. We
will do our utmost to execute these
bids but we offer this service entirely
at the bidder’s risk.
Under this legislation, we are
required to collect a royalty payment
for all qualifying works of art, where
the artist is still living. This royalty
will be charged to the buyer on the
hammer price and in addition to the
buyers premium. It will not apply to
works where the hammer price is
less than €1,000 (euros). The charge
for works of art sold at and above
€1,000 (euros) and below €50,000
(euros) is 4%. For items selling
above €50,000 (euros), charges are
calculated on a sliding scale.
All royalty charges are paid to the
Design and Artists Copyright Society
(‘DACS’) and no handling costs or
additional fees are retained by the
auctioneer. Resale royalties are not
subject to VAT.
Please note that the royalty payment
is calculated on the rate of exchange
at the European Central Bank on the
date of the sale.
More information on Droit de Suite
is available at www.dacs.org.uk
Damage and Restoration
Occasionally when a lot has suffered
extensive damage and/or restoration
it is indicated in the catalogue. This
is mentioned entirely at our
discretion for the benefit of buyers.
Where there is no mention of
damage and/or restoration this
should not be taken to mean that
there is none. It is the buyer’s
responsibility to ensure that the
condition of lots is to their
satisfaction (see our Terms and
Conditions of Sale).
Condition Reports
If potential buyers are unable to
inspect lots in person our specialists
will be happy to prepare detailed

John Houston can and shouldbe considered as the rightfulheir to the Colourist mantle in20th century Scottish Art.Unlike some of hiscontemporaries, he oftenacknowledged that hisintense fascination with boldand effervescent colour canalso be ascribed to an almostsubconscious reaction to thestern and monochromaticgrey sandstone of Edinburgh’sNew Town. Born inBuckhaven in Fife, the seaand sky continued to provideinspiration and subject matterthroughout his career.Houston enrolled at theEdinburgh College of Art andcounted William Gillies, RobinPhilipson and RobertHenderson Blyth asinfluential for his work, whilstDavid Michie, Alan Davie andJeffrey Camp were fellowstudents. He met his futurewife Elizabeth Blackadder atECA and they travelled on astudy scholarship to Italybefore marrying in 1956. Theyboth taught at the collegewhilst also working asexhibiting artists and Houstononly retired in 1989. They

frequently travelled for work,to Japan, France but mostoften Italy and Venice inparticular.
Houston’s oeuvre includesstill life and the human figurebut mostly centres on thelandscape, allowing the artistto truly experiment withcolour, pitch and compositionleading to near abstraction,as dramatically demonstratedin the present work.Houston’s spiritualpredecessors, apart from theScottish Colourists are clearlythe Fauves andExpressionists, Henri Matisseand Emil Nolde in particular. This is conveyed through theexuberance and sensitivitywith which pigment isjudiciously used and paintdefinitively applied to thesurface.
It is rare for a work on thisscale and of Houston andBlackadder’s beloved Veniceto appear on the auctionmarket. The scale inparticular can be seen as atool for the artist in the taskof near-abstraction,demonstrating Houston’s

interest in the work of theAmerican AbstractExpressionists. Houstonnever fully abandonedfiguration and the spirit ofVenice filters through thelayers of colour on thecanvas. What has alwaysattracted artists to theSerenissima century aftercentury is the abundance oflight reflected in thesurrounding canals, thewealth of colour andmaterials in the city, inheritedfrom its rich history as atrading port with the Nearand Far East. The sensoryexperience of being in Veniceis brilliantly conveyed in thepresent work, whilst theimportance of the city for theartist is clearly palpable.

Wallinger, ShirazehHoushiary, Tacita Dean andKeith Tyson, amongst manyothers. There are some whoattribute the artistic buzz ofSouth London and the EastEnd in that era to Delfina’spresence.
Seen as an internationalmodel, the residencyprogramme provided a sort ofstudent extension for theRoyal College, a stepping-stone into the real world. In1996 The Telegraph describedthe Delfina Studio’s Trust as“one of the most remarkableartistic colonies in Britain.”
The pictures offered here arefrom Delfina’s personalcollection, all by formerresident artists of The DelfinaStudios Trust during thatexciting time. The proceedsfrom the sale will go towardssupporting residencies andbursaries for a newgeneration of artistsbenefiting from The DelfinaFoundation, founded in 2007,as the successor to theDelfina Studios Trust. Filling agaping hole in culturalexchange between Britain andthe Middle East, the DelfinaFoundation is an unparalleledconduit for personal
development for artists fromdiverse cultural backgroundsBased in a small townhousenear Buckingham Palace, theFoundation is less concernedwith providing studio spacethan with providing a platformfor dialogue, exhibitions andfacilitating artistic exchange.
The Delfina Studios Trust, established in London in 1988was the brainchild of DelfinaEntrecanales, consisted ofthirty-four studios, exhibitionspaces and an artists’ house, thus creating, until its closurein 2006, the UK’s largestinternational residency space.Having moved out ofinsufficient premises inStratford into a formerchocolate factory nearLondon Bridge, the Studioshoused foreign visitors aswell as local talent.Residents included a numberof Turner Prize nominees andwinners, Anya Galliccio, Mark

surprises the viewer. In hercommission for the DuveenGalleries at Tate Modern in2002 she used molten sugarpoured onto the floor like acarpet, which spread out andhardened, changingappearance with time. Herworks Because Nothing hasChanged (2000), featuring abronze tree adorned withporcelain apples and BecauseI Could Not Stop (2002)showing a similar bronze treewith real apples left to rotemphasise her debt to thetraditional genre of Still Lifepainting and the sub-genre ofmemento mori: paintings ofdelightful and luxuriousworldly objects juxtaposedwith a skull, or a group ofoverly ripe and rotting fruit, orfish, aiming to remind us ofthe passing of time and ourown mortality.
The idea of cycles oftransformation and de/re-generation inherent in theorganic world lies at thecentre of Gallaccio’s work.Because of their conceptualnature, her installations oftenrespond to their proposedlocation and are site-specificor historically resonant. Herearly work in particular wasoften on an enormous scale, such as the thirty-four tonnecube of ice she installed in anold pumping station inWapping, East London in1996, which melted over time, accelerated by a ball of rocksalt buried at its core. Assuch her installations are
often impossible for privatecollectors to acquire. Thepresent lot however is anopportunity to acquire adomestic-scale work by thisacclaimed artist, closelylinked to the installationAspire (1999) for the IkonGallery in Birmingham, wherecandles were suspended fromthe ceiling on large disks andallowed to burn, producingconstantly changing waxsculptures and filling thespace with the aroma of wax.
Gallaccio is a Professor in theDepartment of Visual Arts inthe University of California,San Diego. She frequentlyexhibits in Rome, London,Zurich, Brussels, LosAngeles, New York, Basel andAmsterdam and her work iscollected by major culturalinstitutions such as Museumof Contemporary Art, Sydney,The Seattle Art Museum, theTate Gallery and the SouthGallery in London and theVictoria and Albert Museum.
Paisley-born Anya Gallacciograduated from GoldsmithsCollege of Art in 1988 and isone of the leading Britishsculptors of her generation. She was part of the group ofartists that graduated fromGoldsmiths in the late 1980sand early 1990s that becameknown as the Young BritishArtists. The group includesTracy Emin, Damien Hirst,Sam Taylor-Wood, SarahLucas and Gary Hume andthey distinguished themselveswith a series of artist-ledexhibitions, often held indisused warehouses in theLondon Docklands, one of theearliest of which was Hirst’s1988 Freeze show, whichGallaccio participated in. Shewas nominated for the TurnerPrize in 2003.
Gallaccio’s work centres onthe transient and ephemeral. She frequently uses organicmaterials such as fruit, flowers, ice and wax in herinstallations. She placed tenthousand rose heads on a bedof their stalks for the 1992work Red on Green andallowed them to wither duringthe course of the exhibition.Gallaccio often states that herwork is both a performance, because the pieces change inthe course of the exhibition, and a collaboration, becausethe change is not alwayspredictable or indeedcontrollable. She often usesmaterials in unexpected ways, creating an illusion whichthen challenges and

Note:Liverpool-born Paul Morrisonstudied at Sheffield City Polytechnicand Goldsmiths College of Art.
An artist firmly aware of the greatBritish landscape painting tradition, one glimpses the influence of boththe tradition of herbarium andbotanical studies and the visionarylandscapes of Samuel Palmer in hiswork. Morrison foregoes traditionalperspectival construction of spaceand instead produces‘disorientating optical illusionsweaving between representationand abstraction’. The artist favoursworking on a large scale, both oncanvas and directly on environmentsurfaces to astounding resultswhich play with the viewer’sexpectations of size and space.
Paul Morrison has exhibited at theLas Vegas Art Museum, theBloomberg SPACE, London, TheContemporary Museum, Honolulu,South London Gallery, London,Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona andThe Museum of Modern Art, NewYork among others. He lives andworks in Sheffield and London.

Note:Born in Bavaria in 1952, Förg is oneof the most widely recognisedcontemporary German artists, hiswork represented in a number ofinternational galleries from the TateModern to Munich’s Pinakothek derModerne via the San FranciscoMuseum of Modern Art. He isstrikingly of his generation both inhis questioning of Modernism(tainted for post-war artists by itsassociation with Fascism) and in hisfascination with the experience offragmentation. This painting notonly demonstrates the influence ofMondrian’s geometric style onFörg’s work, but is also typical indisplaying the artist’s exploration ofthemes of physical resistance andseparation, the strong vertical linesforming a barrier on the pictureplane resonant of prison bars, yetleaving our gaze free to penetrateinto the softer atmosphere beyond.

that he discovered a newphotographic technique:having been obliged to placethe bag containing hisundeveloped films throughairport security, he laterdiscovered unexpected linesand colours had infiltrated theimages, caused by theirexposure to X-rays. Thusrather than simply depictingthe object of his travel, theimages testified to the journeyitself, complimenting theartist’s dual focus on thephotographic subject and thephysical properties of themedium.
The discovery of this newphotographic techniqueinspired Beshty to furtherexperimentation. In a seriesof eleven photograms entitledPicture Made by My Handwith the Assistance of Light,2006, the artist first bendssilver gelatin paper intoabstract sculptures, exposingthem to light from all angles, before smoothing them backinto the finished image, inwhich irregular polygons inwhite, gray and black waltzacross the surface.’[2] Boththis series and his depictionof the Berlin defunct Iraqiembassy were presentedtogether to great criticalacclaim in New York’sWallspace exhibition ‘TheMaker and the Model’, in2006, with ArtForum’s DavidVelasco drawing comparisonswith Man Ray and Laszlo
Moholy-Nagy’s experimentalphotography.[3]
Writing about the two series,Artnews critic Eric Bryantdeclares ‘in both bodies ofwork, Beshty is trying tomake explicit the essentialquality of the artwork as anobject rather than animage.’[4] Indeed, the artisthas continued to explore thistheme in a series ofsculptural works; glass,shatter-proof boxes mouldedto fit perfectly inside astandard Fedex box, thenshipped to whichever galleryor exhibition they are next dueto appear in. As the boxes areremoved from theirpackaging, their crackedspider-webbed surfacesattest to the voyage they havemade, their physical lives asart objects and exhibits, andpose difficulties for museumcurators as their ‘damage’defines them.
Walead Beshty now lives andworks in Los Angeles.

British-born artist WaleadBeshty is profoundly engagednot only with questionsintrinsic to the medium ofphotography itself, but also tothe realities of internationalpolitics in a post-9/11 world.
Born in London, he chose topursue his studies across theAtlantic, graduating from YaleUniversity School of Art,before bursting onto thecontemporary art radar withhis first solo show in NewYork in 2004, when he ‘quicklycaptured the attention of theinternational art world withhis probing meditations onpolitical and socialconditions.’ [1]
Although primarily known forhis photographic works,Beshty operates acrossdiverse media, includingsculpture. Throughout hisoeuvre he displays aconsistent fascination withthe notion of travel, how weare marked by the places wepass through, and how theexperience of travel itself ischanging, with increasedsecurity measures inresponse to terrorist attacks. From 2001 to 2006 the artistvisited the defunct IraqiDiplomatic Mission in theformer East Berlin, photographing the site anumber of times, and findingin it a symbol of shiftingnotions of place andsovereignty. It was whilereturning from such a trip

149.9cm x 350.5cm (59in x 138in)
Note:This work by Dutch artist CarlaKlein, born in 1970 in Zwolle andtrained in The Hague andAmsterdam, is an ambiguous piecethat subtly questions notions ofmedia and genre, space and scale. The painting emerged from a roadtrip taken by the artist along thewest coast of the United States, grounded in a modern traditionimmortalised by Kerouac yet evokingtimeless notions of pilgrimage anddiaspora, and in it the artistexamines a very modern experienceof travel whilst also celebrating anage-old device of ekphrasis. Whilstskilfully executed in a traditionalpainterly style, complete withatmospheric sky redolent of Dutchold master seascapes, Klein also
consciously draws attention to thepainting’s photographic origins, black lines at its edge echoing thenegatives of the snapshots she tookduring her journey beforereproducing them on canvas. Thework hovers too between aphotographic realism- this is clearlya landscape- and an abstractevocation of mood, hinting at thetraveller’s awe at the seeminginfinity of the landscape stretchingbefore them, mirrored in itsimpressive scale, but also, with itsclearly defined picture planecontained within its white edges, reproducing the contained space ofthe windscreen from which thisworld is experienced.

unruly world of nature beyondtheir walls.
In Innocent When You Dream, however, Kürten has movedbeyond the urban world, intothe forest itself, devoid of allhuman presence. Now naturequite literally moves into theforeground, in a quiet pastoralscene of water and sky, rocksand trees, with a subtlepalette of white, grey andbrown enlivened by the yellowgreen of spring growth, nolonger threatening, simplythere. Despite its realism, however, this image is aconstruction in which theguiding hand of the artist isclearly present: look moreclosely amidst the detailedtrees and pebbles of the riverbed and one begins toglimpse the obsession withtexture and patterns whichinfuse all of Kürten’spaintings, rococo whirls and
knots of Celtic intricacyforming an alternative artist’ssignature. This two-tieredsurface, the initial glancefollowed by a new focus, istypical of the artist’s work. Asa child he collected samplesof kitsch 1970’s wallpaper, and their patterns repeat likea refrain throughout hispaintings, evoking the surrealwhorls of Van Gogh’s StarryNight and the curlicues whichembrace Klimt’s maidens.
Born in Germany in 1969,Stefan Kürten trained underMichael Buthe (1944-94) atthe KunstakademieDüsseldorf before continuinghis studies at the Art Instituteof San Francisco, where helater taught. His work is heldin the Museum of Modern Art,New York, and the SaatchiGallery, London. He lives andworks in Düsseldorf and NewYork.
The strength of Kurten’spaintings is less theirunraveling of the limitationsof the built world than theirsense of the spaciousmysteries surrounding it. –David Franken, ArtForum,September 2002.
In Kürten’s work nature is anexuberant, almost sinisterforce, abundant frondsbursting from lush forest orcreeping from suburbangardens, encroaching uponthe man-made andthreatening to engulf it. Inpaintings such as TheHandsome Family, andUltramarine II (SaatchiGallery, London, 2004) weobserve his uneasyfascination with bourgeoisexistence, as he depicts thestatus symbols of modernliving, objets d’art in crispminimalist interiors thatcontrast sharply with the
