Precise Nutrition & Fitness Center Hosts5K / 1 Mile Race to Benefit Education

On November 2, 2013, PreciseNutrition & Fitness Center will behosting a 5K / 1-mile race to benefiteducational programs in the PascoCounty area. More specifically, therace will benefit two programs – theAdvanced Placement program and theInteract Club – that are close to thehearts of Precise Nutrition & FitnessCenter owners Mike and ChristineGilmore because their daughterCourtney was a very involved highschool student in those programs.

Mike and Christine are asking thepublic to join in the race to helphonor Courtney.

“Our daughter, Courtney and herfriend Kimberlee, were in both ofthese programs giving us insight intothe drive and cost necessary to excel inacademics. On July 2, 2013, bothyoung ladies were taken from us in atragic car accident. We would like tofulfill their ambition and determina-

tion by donating proceeds* of thisrace to the programs they were so pas-sionately involved in.

“Advanced Placement (AP) is aprogram in the United States createdby the College Board offering college-level curriculum and examinations tohigh school students. American col-leges often grant placementand course credit to students who ob-tain high scores above a certain num-ber on the examinations.Unfortunately, a burden is placedupon so many bright students becausemuch of the cost goes directly to thestudent for books and supplies. Wewant to take that burden from the stu-dent so that they can focus on theirstudies alone.

“The Interact Club is an interna-tional organization of service and so-cial clubs for young people ofsecondary school age that fosters lead-ership and responsible citizenship and

promotes inter-national under-standing andpeace.”

Community News BriefsMedical Center of Trinity An-nounces Major Advancement inthe Treatment of Lung Cancer

Medical Center of Trinity an-nounced a major addition to its cancertreatment arsenal. and is now utilizingElectromagnetic Navigation Bron-choscopy® (ENB) ™ to access andbiopsy lesions deep in the lung. ThesuperDimension® i-Logic™ System isa minimally invasive option for pa-tients who have been identified as hav-ing a small or hard-to-reach lesion ontheir lung that is inaccessible throughtraditional bronchoscope. The ENBprocedure combines GPS-like technol-ogy with a catheter-based system thatuses the patient’s natural airways toreach these particular masses.

ENB is typically an outpatientprocedure and minimizes the need formore invasive surgical procedures toassess lesions in the distant regions ofthe lung, where more than two-thirdsof all cancers are found. This new pro-cedure minimizes the need for moreconventional assessments, such as tho-rascopic or percutaneous needle

biopsy, which may require an inpatientstay and can cause complications suchas a collapsed lung.

This procedure may be usedwhen an abnormal finding in a distantpart of the lung has been found on anx-ray, CT scan or PET-CT scan thatmay be caused by infection, inflamma-tion or cancer. Small lesions in theouter area of the lung are difficult toreach for diagnosis and treatment.“Traditional bronchoscopy frequentlyfails to reach the outer areas of thelungs often leading to more invasivesurgical options for diagnosis,” saysDr. Nagesh Salian, pulmonologist. The Electromagnetic NavigationBronchoscopy® will allow a physicianto locate, test, diagnose, and poten-tially treat the one legion even in theouter areas of the lungs,” he added.

How does it work? After a lesionhas been detected through CT, thepatient’s scan is loaded into planningsoftware that creates a 3D roadmap ofthe lungs. A bronchoscope is placedthrough the patient’s mouth and intothe airways of the lungs. The ENB’scatheters are next placed in the chan-

nel of the bronchoscope. The electro-magnetic sensors in the cathetersguide the physician to the targeted le-sion. Once there, the guide catheter isremoved and the extended workingchannel catheter remains. Biopsy toolsare then placed through the workingcatheter to obtain tissue samples fortesting and diagnosis. Upon comple-tion of the procedure, the patient goesto recovery and, in the vast majority ofcases, discharged home.

“Bringing this technology to ourcommunity is a huge step forward,”said Lawrence Hochman, DO,FACRO (Fellow of the American Col-lege of Radiation Oncologists), “Thisgives our patients access to diagnosticand treatment options on par withuniversity centers.

“We are proud to offer this tech-nology to the community which fur-ther enhances our Accredited CancerProgram by the Commission on Can-cer,” said Leigh Massengill, CEO ofMedical Center of Trinity. “News thata spot (lesion), deep in your lung, hasbeen found and a lung biopsy needs tobe performed raises many concernsand emotions. It is important toknow that you may have options closeto home.”

How would you like to be re-membered? Let’s face it, it’s not thehottest topic to talk about over thedinner table, but it is an importantone. Shouldn’t we at least have theconversation about how we’d like tobe remembered when the time comes?Shouldn’t we have an opinion andmake it known now, and choose theway we would want to be memorial-ized? Trinity Memorial Gardens, at12609 Memorial Drive in Trinity, justoff of S.R. 54, is fully prepared to helppeople of all faiths make these difficultdecisions while honoring their beliefsand making the grieving process aseasy as possible.

Choosing your legacy is impor-tant, and while it may be a tough, often uncomfortable conversation tohave, it’s one worth having. Thegreatest gift you can give to your fam-

ily after you pass is to have your wishesin writing, your plans in place, andbetter yet – your final goodbye com-pletely arranged. In the midst of griefand loss, it’s an unimaginable task fora grieving family member to wonder,“What would they have wanted?”

says, “Our focus is educating the com-munity about their options. There areendless options, and families don’tknow that; they don’t know until it istime.” He explains, “It’s a ministrythat we do in actually engaging in ed-ucating the community on death anddying.”

way to comfort those you love afteryou have died, and prearranging is notas unusual as you might think. In fact, these days, people are taking an activerole in their funeral plans, and they aredesigning a funeral for themselves withtheir families in mind. This takes theheavy burden off of children, lovedones, and siblings who may have toguess on important decisions such asburial versus cremation. In fact, manyare designing funerals that focus lesson their passing and more on thebeautiful life and the relationships thatmade their lives so special.

In order to do so, some difficultquestions have to be asked. Here are afew of the tough questions. Do you

want to beburied? Wouldyou like afancy casket ora simple one?Would youprefer to becremated?Would youwant an urn?Would youprefer to bescattered?Would youlike a head-

stone? Would you prefer to be buriedwith someone or by someone? Wouldyou prefer to be placed in an above-ground mausoleum? These are just afew of the many questions that theemployees of Trinity Memorial Gar-dens are prepared to help you decide.

Whatever your personal wishesare, it’s important to share your wishesand make a plan. The questions arehard now; imagine how much harderthey would be for your children orloved ones in the days following yourpassing. Prearranging your funeraltakes the burden off of your family, and gives you peace of mind.

Czech says, “Prearranging has somany benefits. It’s the greatest gift

you can ever leave your family. An-other benefit is that when you pre-arrange, you lock in the price and canpay over a period of time for the fu-neral you desire.”

If you haven’t thought about it,it’s time to start the dialogue withthose around you, and you’ll be sur-prised by the answers, because theymay not be the answers that you ex-pected. Whatever your wishes, it’s aseasy as sitting down with the profes-sionals at Trinity Memorial Gardensand making a plan. Prearranged funer-als are like giving a final gift to thosewho love and cherish you the most.

Trinity Memorial Gardens HelpsFamilies Grieve

Many people believe that the fu-neral is for the person who has passed, but when you think about it, a funeralis really a time and a place for every-one who loved you to come togetherin unity and go through the manyemotions that go with grieving. Thereare many stages to grief, and funerals, while sad, are helpful in the healingprocess for those who are mourning.

The beautiful and recently reno-vated funeral home at Trinity Memo-rial Gardens can accommodate manydifferent styles of funerals, from inti-mate family gatherings, to large wakeswhere hundreds of people may cometo pay their respects.

Equally, the vast 40-acre ceme-tery, which is only 40% developed atthis time, is a serene place to say good-bye, and to come and visit with thosewho have passed. The beautiful ceme-tery at Trinity Memorial Gardens isreminiscent of a park, with beautifullandscaping, fountains and flowers. This tranquil landscape is divided intolarge sections that are designated byfaith. In essence, there are many mini-cemeteries within the grounds thatcater to different faiths, as well aslovely grounds dedicated to those who

prefer a non-denominational burial. Also on the grounds is an impressivemausoleum that offers indoor andoutdoor burial options. The cathedral-like stained glass windows welcomevisitors into a climate-controlled at-mosphere where family members cansit comfortably, rain or shine, andhonor those who have died. Fromplots for one, to private mini estatesand family dedicated mausoleums,Trinity Memorial Gardens can helpyour loved one rest in peace, and givesurvivors a place to come and peace-fully remember those who have goneahead.

If someone you love has passedaway, think of Trinity Memorial Gar-dens, for they can help you and yourfamily create a funeral arrangement foryour loved one that will be heartfelt, personal and peaceful.

Czech says, “We aim to be pillarsof strength and certainty in our com-munity.”

If you are ready to make yourwishes known, and in doing so, give along-lasting gift to your loved ones bypreparing arrangements now, pleaseconsider working with the experiencedTrinity Memorial Gardens staff, whowill make the process as easy and com-fortable as possible. Their missionstatement says it all: “We pledge tofulfill our trust and obligation to everyTrinity Memorial Gardens familyproperty owner and to all the commu-nities we serve.”

Saturday, October 19, at the Car-illon Parkway/Catalina MarketingField the 4th annual Tampa Bay Walksfor Talk to benefit children withChildhood Apraxia of Speech will beheld. The event is a family-fun filledday including a walk, lunch, andgames for kids. On-site registrationand check-in begins at 10 a.m., andthe walk begins promptly at 11:15a.m. There is a family meet and greetafter the walk at 2 p.m.

Proceeds from the walk will bene-fit CASANA’s (The ChildhoodApraxia of Speech Association ofNorth America) apraxia programs andresearch. CASANA is a source of in-

spiration and instrumental inhelping many families and pro-fessionals gain the knowledgein apraxia needed to move chil-dren with Childhood Apraxiaof Speech (CAS) to developmeaningful speech. For many

families it is the first place they look tofor support after their child is diag-nosed.

According to CASANA Child-hood Apraxia of Speech is a motorspeech disorder that first becomes ap-parent as a young child is learningspeech. For reasons not yet fully un-derstood, children with apraxia ofspeech have great difficulty planningand producing the precise, highly re-fined and specific series of movementsof the tongue, lips, jaw and palate thatare necessary for intelligible speech.Apraxia of speech is sometimes knownas verbal apraxia, developmentalapraxia of speech, or verbal dyspraxia. The most important concept is theroot word “praxis.” Praxis means

planned movement. To some degreeor another, a child with the diagnosisof apraxia of speech has difficulty pro-gramming and planning speech move-ments. Apraxia of speech is a specificspeech disorder. This difficulty in plan-ning speech movements is the missingkey of childhood apraxia of speech. The challenge and difficulty that chil-dren with apraxia have in creat-ing speech can be confusing toparents, especially when theyobserve the skill of learningto speak developing, seem-ingly without effort, in otherchildren.

Brenae Solis, the walkcoordinator for Tampa Bay,turned to CASANA when herdaughter Emily was diagnosedwith apraxia at 22 months old.Brenae explains, “There wasnowhere to go to in Florida forsupport at the time.CASANA is the nationalapraxia not-for-profit

organization that is run out of Pitts-burg. They helped me create a walkand support group here in Florida. The proceeds of our Tampa walk goto CASANA.”

CASANA’s mission is tostrengthen the support systems in thelives of children with apraxia so thateach child is afforded their best oppor-tunity to develop to their full poten-tial. Jen hadnever heard of apraxia before her thirdchild, Caleb, was diagnosed at 33months. Jen explains, “I knew some-thing was wrong when he still wasn’ttalking at two-and-a-half. I went toour pediatrician first, and then wewent to Early Steps several times be-fore we went to FDLRS (Florida Di-agnostic and Learning ResourceSystem). It was very frustrating be-cause we were told so many differentthings before we got his diagnosis. He now receives support through theTALK Program in the school systemand private therapy. He’s makinggreat gains with the combination of

the two. The other day he strungthree words together. Every child isdifferent. For most children speechworks itself out, but Caleb was one of1,000 that it didn’t. I encouragemoms to trust your instinct if youthink something in wrong. Early in-tervention is critical.”

Now Offering Complimentary SleepApnea and SnoringConsultations

Sufficient sleep and rest are neces-sary in your life for optimal health andperformance, and Dr. Nelson is seriousin his efforts to provide top-notch den-tal sleep medical care to his patients. In2012, Nelson Dentistry and DentalSleep Medicine became the first facilityin the state of Florida and one of thefirst 20 in the country to receive pro-gram accreditation from the AmericanAcademy of Dental Sleep Medicine(AADSM). “The American Academyof Dental Sleep Medicine congratulatesNelson Dentistry on fulfilling the highstandards required for receiving accred-itation as a dental sleep medicine facil-ity,” says Dr. Gail Demko, AADSMpresident. “Nelson Dentistry is a signif-icant resource to the local sleep medi-

cine community and will provide thehighest quality care for patients withsleep-disordered breathing.”

In order to receive accreditation, adental sleep medicine facility must ex-ceed all standards designated by theAADSM. Standards include: the con-tinuing education of staff, a developedset of policies and procedures for ac-cepting, treating and billing patients; aswell as adherence to approved stan-dards for safety and patient follow up.

Dental sleep medicine is a growingsection of dentistry with a focus onmanaging snoring and sleep apnea withoral appliance therapy (OAT). As an ef-fective alternative to continuous posi-tive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy,OAT utilizes a “mouth guard-like” de-vice worn during sleep in order for pa-tients to maintain an open, unobstructed airway. OAT prevents the

airway from collapsing by either hold-ing the tongue in the forward positionor supporting the jaw. Dr. Nelson hasthe knowledge to help patients withyour sleep problems in a way that does-n’t require a machine and can be morecomfortable. His alternative to theCPAP is to custom-fit patients with anoral appliance, such as the SomnoMed,which is a small acrylic device that fitsover the upper and lower teeth; re-aligning your jaw in order to open yourairway and allow more air to flow intothe lungs as you sleep. The SomnoMeddevice is much like a retainer or mouthguard – providing patients with an ex-cellent success rate for sleep apnea andsnoring prevention. Dr. Nelson and hisstaff at Nelson Dentistry are very ex-cited about the future of dental sleepmedicine and look forward to being apart of the innovative treatment op-tions that they can now offer to theirpatients.

Massage Services that ImproveYour Life

“Your Health is your Wealth” isthe philosophy at Barkdoll MassageTherapy, and that is why Karla takesthe time to really find out what kind

of massage you prefer, whether it’s aSwedish massage or a deep tissuetreatment for chronic pain, Karla’smassage will make a difference inyour life.

Karla offers a wide range of af-fordable massage therapy styles andpackages. If you are looking for a tra-ditional massage, Swedish massagetreatments are designed to improvecirculation, reduce stress and to re-lieve muscle tension. This massage isvery popular all over the world be-cause of its light, long, and slowstrokes that relax your cares and wor-ries away. If you are interested in try-ing something a little different, hotstone massages use something calledwarm stone therapy, which is the artof using heated stones in combina-tion with a Swedish massage. Accord-ing to Karla, the warm stones dissolvemuscle tension and induce a deep re-laxation.

Deep tissue massage is a thera-peutic treatment designed to ease thepain and discomfort associated withchronic pain. Karla says, “Duringdeep tissue massages I use triggerpoints to specifically find the placeswhere the work needs to be done.”Deep tissue massages can help peoplewho live with painful conditions live a

fuller life.Another style of massage that

Karla offers is sports massage and in-jury rehabilitation. This style of mas-sage combines the benefits and styleof a deep tissue massage with stretch-ing, which can improve the range ofmotion in joints. Whether you arehealing after a car accident or are suf-fering from chronic pain associatedwith a medical condition, this kind ofmassage can be extremely beneficial.

One of Karla’s clients from Trin-ity recently said, “I have had thepleasure of having Karla as a massagetherapist for the past six years and ithas always been an enriching andhealing experience. She is knowledge-able, professional and a kind-heartedperson and I have no hesitation inrecommending her service. She hashands of gold!”

Prenatal massages are a fantasticway to pamper the mom-to-be whileeasing some of the side effects ofpregnancy. Karla uses specially de-signed massage table pillows that cre-ate a comfortable position just for herduring this time, so that pregnantmoms can safely enjoy their massage.

Aromatherapy is proven to aid inrelaxation, which is why Barkdoll

Massage Therapy offers a variety ofessential oils and scents that can beused in collaboration with any otherstyle of massage. Most often usedwith a Swedish massage, aromather-apy oils are applied by Karla duringyour massage to enhance the massageexperience.

One local couple recently wrote,“We all have very busy schedules andit saves us time and stress to haveKarla come right to our home. Myhusband has chronic pain and herweekly massages help him tremen-dously. Whether you just want agreat stress reliever or you have amedical condition I would highly rec-ommend Karla!”

If you are looking for a fantasticway to improve morale at work, howabout offering your employees a cor-porate seated massage? This is a fullyclothed, seated massage that can bedone right at the office. This style ofmassage focuses on the back, neck, shoulders, scalp, arms and hands. What a great way to let your employ-ees know how much you care aboutthem!

every chance I get, but to be honest, that isn’t very often. When I’m notbusy with my family or writing forthe Neighborhood News, I’m likemost moms and am usually con-cerned with everyone else’s comfortover my own. That’s why I was so ex-cited to be given the chance to expe-rience one of Karla’s massages by thestaff at Neighborhood News.(Thanks Jim!)

Scheduling my massage turnedout to be a breeze because BarkdollMassage Therapy is one of the onlyplaces that offers evening massage ap-pointments. It was all very easy forme since I wasn’t going to have toworry about driving anywhere or ababysitter for the kids! On theevening of my massage appointment,I simply picked out a quiet room inthe house, sent the kids outside toplay with my hubby, and got ready toenjoy my massage.

Karla arrived right on time andbrought everything she needed withher. A true professional, Karla evenwears a clinical massage uniform.Within just a few minutes Karla hadset up the massage table and was setup and ready to go. I was really im-pressed with how quickly the room I

had picked had been transformed. Before we started she spoke to meabout what kind of massage treat-ment I wanted, and she asked if I hadany injuries that she needed to beaware of. We decided on a combina-tion Swedish and deep tissue mas-sage. She also offered me manydifferent aromatherapy options fromrose oil to eucalyptus. I felt totally atease, and while she stepped out of theroom, I comfortably got onto themassage table and got settled.

When Karla came back in a mo-ment later, she put on what I like tocall “massage music,” and spoke tome about what she was going to dobefore she began. To my surprise, Iwas even more relaxed because I wasat home. I enjoyed the entire hourinstead of wondering how many min-utes had passed, or wondering aboutthe kids. I felt safe, pampered andwell cared for.

After my massage, I felt like asoftened stick of butter, and I wasable to just put on my slippers insteadof my shoes! This was an incrediblycool experience that made me feelmore centered, and really changedmy outlook. I felt great for days andmy entire family could see what a dif-

ference it made for me both physi-cally and emotionally.

I can see that a massage withKarla would be a great gift, which iswhy I’m so happy that she offers giftcertificates, but one of the best partsabout Barkdoll Massage Therapy ishow affordable it is. I might not haveto wait for a special occasion becauseher pricing is competitive and afford-able enough to fit into anyone’sbudget on a regular basis. From nowon, I’m going to take better care ofmyself, and that includes having mas-sage treatments from Barkdoll Mas-sage Therapy on a regular basis. See

you in a few weeks Karla!
